Riminglon ..................2 WoTsihorne. . . . . . . . . . 1 RIMINGTON got the win they needed to retain their- East Lancashire League First Division titla Although not a t their
best, the commitment, spirit and neyer-say-die attitude of the players was a major factor. : Worsthorne knew they
'. they were the better side in •: the first half. :
: . They started the game
well, and with their first attack, Barratt broke away, only for Kershaw to
■ spread himself at the feet of the striker to block his effort. ; Rimington had a chance
soon after when Lloyd charged down the keeper’s clearance, only to see it roll agonisingly wide. Barratt opened the scor
ing with another typical run onto a long through-'. ; ball;- and this time he
had to win to keep their ' own title hopes alive, and -.
; showed, why he is the top gdalscorer as he lifted the ball over Kershaw. : - ■ His pace was a constant;
threat, as Rimington missed the injured Curtis, and Barratt found himself through again, only to be .
thwarted by Kershaw. •
• The villagers seemed strangely subdued, partic ularly in midfield,:but great play down the right from Lloyd ended, in a cross which Dinsdale just failed to latch onto. . And the keeper then made a great save from a Lloyd shot. ; The play now swun'g;
from end to end, and Ker shaw’s bravery kept Rim ington in'the game, before Tom O’Neill' conjiired up" ■ another sublime moment, embarking on a run before unleashing a typical left- foot shot which the kreper
did well to get a hand to on its way into the top corner. Rimington played with
. a much better tempo in the second half and pressed the visitors'back, with O’Neill running at the full back, Dinsdale supporting Penman and Lloyd and Walmsley and Mclean prompting from midfield. And it was Worsthorne’s
keeper who how had to keep them in the game.
, Rimingtori had a great shout for a penalty as Lloyd :was upended, Lut
: the referee i^ored appeals. . However, they were soon ahead:i'as ; Lloyd- was
brought down 25 yards out, and O’Neill stepped up to curl the free kick over the wall and in off a combination of the keeper and crossbar.
, , 'Worsthorne came back,
knowing they needed at least one goal to prevent the title being won on the day, and they threw every thing at Rimington. . But Clark, Lawson,
Hutchinson and 'Walker defended with spirit and Kershaw produced anoth er couple of stunning saves to keep them at bay.
-we have achieved again so far.
‘"The players have been
fantastic and done every thing I have asked them to do.
‘‘It. has been a squad ' thing, everyone has had a
: part to play, their attitude has been superb, and that has been
the.major factor in us finishing top again. ; “But we areh’t finished
:
' Terry Braithwaite said: “I ain very proud of .what'
yet, we, have two more league games to play and are still in thedupsi so we nred to keep going.” '. :' Saturday sees a home game with Stacksteads, kick-off 2-15 p.m.:;,' :
