Man’s illustrious life conies to end
By-Faiza Afzaal
A FORMER Clitheroe man has died at the grand oid age
of 90. Mr Norman Parkinson passed
away at North Tyneside General Hospital. He was the only son of the late
Mr and Mrs Herbert Parkinson, who .resided in Radcliffe Street, Clitheroe. Having received his earlier edu
cation at Clitheroe Council Schools, he attended Clitheroe Royal Grammar School by schol arship in 1930, and after being a brilliant scholar his career ensued. He became headboy in 1936-37 and was awarded the Boden Prize for mathematics. Entering
Victoria.University, Manchester, in October 1937, he studied chemistry, physics, and mathematics under the famous Professor Polani to achieve a BSc in 1940. Continuing his studies and
research led in 19.43 to an MSc - after which he became a senior
lecturer in the department of chemistry and was appointed warden of St Anselm’s hall of resi dence for students - an appoint ment held for two years. He was a fellow of the British Institute of Chemistry. Leaving Manchester in 1945, he
moved to Kinlochleven, in-Scot- land, as metalurgical chemist to. the works of the British Alumini um company. It was during this time that he.
met Miss Nina Rutherford, whom he married in 1945. Between 1947-50, he worked with the Mai-: lory Battery Company and lived in Brentwood, Essex. Among other things, he was responsible for the development of the hear ing aid battery. In 1950 he was appointed by
the British Atomic Energy Authority to be Director of Research and laboratory manag er to the nuclear plant at Doun- reay, but after a few years there, he and his staff were moved to the larger plant at Sellafield, Cum bria. The majority of his working life was spent there, where he was
involved with development of the magnox reactor for producing electricity to the grid.: ‘ : His work necessitated impor tant research and responsibilities,
. including travel to Germany, Aiis- .tria,;France, Italy and twice to , the United States of America to '.attend important conferences at top level.
During.this time, he made his
family home in St Bees and was closely associated with St Bees Priory Church as a choir member,
■ but he also served as a vicar’s war- ‘ den and church treasurer for seven
years; v Nevertheless, he never lost
interest in Clitheroe and the Rib- ble Valley to which he returned almost every year. He was a for mer president of the Old Clithero- nians’ Association. Having lost his wife about 18
months ago, Mr Parkinson is sur vived by his two sons, Alan, from London, and David, from White- ley Bay, together with his two grandsons James and Andrew. He will be sincerely missed by his many friends.

Read and Siraonstone Constitu tional Club, in Whalley Road, had scooped the East Lancashire Camra Club of the Season award in April which was shortly fol lowed by a Cask Mark national accreditation for real ale. However, his award-winning
antics did not stop there as he has now added the East Lancashire Camra Club of the Year trophy to , the club’s mantelpiece. The club faced stiff competition but the staff were positive that they could win the award. They later proved that their pint was “half full” when they were rewarded for the standard of real ale and the quali ty of the club’s atmosphere. Mr Bruce, whose club recently
became part of the LocALE scheme, said: “I am delighted because this is something I have worked hard on. I took over the club in September and since then I have just wanted to give it my best and make it a good place for people to come and visit. I pride myself on the quality'of the real ale we serve here and the atmos phere that we generate so it is nice to be rewarded for it. If someone*, comes in here they are always assured a smile.” .

for Lancashire CamRA club of the year which would then lead on to best North-West club and then best national club. The club even , received great feedback from Mr John Ingham, head of East Lan cashire CamRA, following a : recent visit. ■ \
Daffodils look
blooming good DIAMOND daffodils for Gisburn are in full bloom beside the signposts at each of the four entrances to the village. . The bulbs were planted to mark the
occasion of the Diamond Anniversary of Gisburn WI and now everyone enter ing the village can enjoy the welcoming sight pictured here. A commemorative calendar produced
by WI members and featuring photo graphs taken around the village was presented to each member at a Dia mond Celebration meal held in'January - the exact anniversary of the first meet ing of Gisburn WI. A limited number of copies of the calendar produced for sale were also snapped up very quickly.
Pictures revive
many memories A PICTURE show entitled “A Trip Down Memory Lane” was presented to Clitheroe Civic Society by James and Mark Thomber. It has a unique provenance, being the
work of E. Buck, the famous local pho tographer and postcard producer. Origi nally the pictures were made to give lantern slideshows, but have now been put on disc by James and Mark. As the first picture came up, there
were murmurs from the audience - where it was, who was on it - and some people recognised friends and faihily in almost all the scenes.
, Every aspect of life in Clitheroe in the
early 20th century was captured; indus try in Tabins Yard and Duck Street, the mills( including Thornber’s Holmes Mill and the engine), building the library, ox roasts and elections, laying electricity cables. Pea Harry,‘ stage coach travel, the railway, even the post men.'Clitheroe seems to have been a busy, thrmug place at the beginning of that century. Ranging further afield around the
■ Mr Bruce added: “The trade at
other places seems to be dwin dling because times are hard. For tunately we are managing to keep a sustained if not improved amount of trade at the moment. I am on top of the world at the moment because I never expected . to receive any kind of award when I started working here.

“I can’t believe it. One award is enough but to be given
two.is a
great feeling. I still want to achieve more and keep pushing myself and move the club for-

; • The picture show is a visual history Itook, totally fascinating and members thanked Mark and James wholeheart edly for a fantastic evening of memo ries. The next meeting of Clitheroe Civic- Society is September 7th, for the ACM.
