The really good news is that people like Sainsbury and Homebase have decided to come here and have been determined enough to fight the obstacles put in their way by our backward looking council. I just hope it does not deter M&S from ' opening a food hall. I am already salivat ing at the prospect of shopping there. As well as the public campaign,
launched by Judith and Mandy Dawson, there are other forces at work in the town to improve its retail offering. This time it is two men, Rupert Swarbrick and David Ingham who are leading the field. Respec tively the chairman and director of the Kibble Valley Strategic Partnership, they

■ MEMBERS of the teaching profession were among those who walked in proces sion to Clitheroe Parish Church for a civic service to mark the first term of office of the newly-elected Mayor, Coun. James Entwistle, a teacher. O Brilliant bowling provided many of
the highlights of the Ribblesdale League holiday programme. At Church Mead ow, Kenneth Standring took nine Settle wickets for 41 runs to help Ribblesdale Wanderers towards the points. Frank
. Tattersall, the Whalley professional, claimed seven Padiham wickets for 14 runs, including a hat-trick. Harry Smithies the Clitheroe batsman, racked up a merry 87 against Skipton and com pleted Clitheroe's victory effort by tak ing three wickets for six runs.

SCORES of jobs likely to be created in Clitheroe were at risk following refusal of planning permission for the building of two access bridges over Mearley Brook. The engineering firm Econ Atkinson made the planning application jointly with a local businessman. • Kibble Valley Council was to press
on with a tree replacement programme, which in the last six months, had seen 770 planted in 16 parishes. They had been put up on verges in school grounds and in several residential areas. • Clitheroe Grammar School pupil
Robert Mansell earned a place in the junior English Alpine squad. He was preparing to travel to Val Senales, Italy, to train with the squad.

www.cIitheroeadvertiserco.uk-A .. Retailing in Clitheroe, as I am sure the
, Dawsons will agree, is a funny old busi- ’ ness. Most of us, at some time in the last few years, have needed something at
. Homebase and, whenever we have, we have had to drive out of the Valley and take our money with us. The only reason for all that driving - and for depriving the Clitheroe shopkeepers of our trade on the days we left - was the behaviour of our local councillors who voted against giving planning permission. Thank goodness Homebase persisted and got their daft and damaging decision overturned! We must'all hope that Rupert and
David succeed in changing attitudes on the council so that more of us can do more of our shopping in Clitheroe. It’s a town we love and we want to shop there.

cialist nurse Kulsam Patel gave a pres entation on insulin pumps as a treat ment for the condition. No bigger than a pager, the pumps
clip on to the patient’s belt and a nee dle is attached to the abdomen and insulin is then delivered a t regular intervals which can be adjusted at the touch of a button in line with activity levels. The insulin used is fast acting and predominantly for Type 1 dia
betes. It is intense but gives increased lifestyle flexibility. -

consultant only after standard treat ment fails to control their condition. Patient satisfaction has increased and the cost to the NHS has decreased. Kulsam said the advantages were easy to manage and the only disadvan-
