SEARCHING for scarecrows is big business. in one Ribble;

■Valley village.. ‘ Waddington’s annual Scarecrow.

. Festival draws people of all ages from across the area and beyond to = an event 'which has become a pop-, ular tourist attraction.

- > Over three days, thousands of

visitors converge on the village to view, the handiwork of household-: ers who have spent hours making' models which they put on display : outside their homes. •

/ . ' . This year many well-known

faces had been reincarnated in.v scarecrow form including Willy Wonka with: a window full o f ' Oompa Loompas, as well as one of the country’s best-known foot--

■ bailers, together with a cheeky ref-' erence to one of his nicknamesl • ^ . Other exhibits included a mini

bells, cockle shells and a whole row of pretty maids.

.. Maypole with the ribbons held by a variety of small stuffed toys and ■ an officers’-mess complete with a

; member of the armed forces and his female companion. ’

■ r ;The invisible man was almost ■ there, while one scarecrow had - gone “ back to basics’’ literally,

. with the designers simply using a bale of straw.

■; - There were many humorous models, including a “Knight on the; tiles” with the armour-clad hero

, depicted alongside his empties,- and Little Miss Muffet was sitting

. on her tuffet in the main street accompanied by. an oversized spi der. Outside another home Mary,:

• Mary was tending her garden ■ which was in full bloom with silver

- A variety of different events had- been organised for every day of the

: St Helen’s Church festival and held on the village croft. . Festivities culminated -with the. now legendary duck race.

• •.

■: .As the start o f the race drew ; . closer, the banks o f the v i l la g e . 'brook were packed with spectators who saw the amazing spectacle of

.V hundreds of small yellow plastic : birds bobbing their way through - - the village, with the first past the

.. post claiming a cash prize of £200 - for the owner of the corresponding ' ticket. ;. • Young Charlotte Winder, p ic - . tured. to p , : was crowned R o s e . Queen.

On the diesel front, Vauxhall’s advanced 2.0-litre oil-burners take a bow for the first time and if the CDTI tech nology in the Vectra’s diesels is any indi cation, they’ ll be more than enough to keep fleet-customers contented.: We can also expect an Ecoflex version

with low C02 emissions.'The Insignia is offered in two or four-wheel-drive guise with the 4x4 model benefiting from the clever adaptive all-wheel-drive system pioneered by Saab. It adapts the distri--, bution of torque between all four wheels instantaneously to enhaiice traction and handling. This should give the Insignia a key

advantage over its predominately 2WD rivals. There’s also the optional IDS Plus:

: active chassis which controls damper set- according to the driving conditions;

stitute the UK road network. Vauxhall tells us that their new models will be individuals rather than conforming to a . common styling theme as the Corsa, Astra and Vectra have done in recent J times. .-

• 'The Insignia looks distinctive, there’s;.

; no question about that. Offered as a five- -7 door, a four-door or an estate, the'car ' tries for a dynamic, head-turning appear- i

which drops dramatically towards the • rear and, perhaps the Insignia’s signature , ; stylistic device, the “blade” feature that’s , cutaway behind the front wheelarches. At the front, all Insignia models feature a , bold chrome grille with the latest Yaux- hall badge at the centre. - ,
