'l l

WHALLEY endured a painful weekend, with a good thrashing from near, neighbours Ciitheroe, and a defeat that was hard to take at Edenfield, as crucial decisions cost them dear. ' With a perfect mcket for

the local derby on Saturday, a high-scoring affair was expected at Station Road. But the home side failed

to build on a positive start that saw them set up nicely for a big onslaught, as, after standing a t 97-2 with 20 overs remaining, they pressed the self destruct button to finish on'162 all

; out - a total that would prove a stroll for Ciitheroe. Richard Paimer elected

to bat, and a confident start saw himself and Declan Fitzhenry put on 35, before Jack Dewhurst had Fitzhenry caught behind- for 14.

, / Professional Rajagopal Sathish brought high expec tations for Whalley, but on 57 he tried one shot too many, too soon, as he departed for 20, having had a blast at Farouk Hussain, taking 16 off one over, before hoiing out to Carl Palmer to the delight of the Ciitheroe team.

, Palmer had played a fine

captain’s innings and was run out on 47 with’111 on the board, and Whalley looking well set. But that was the begin

ning of the end as Lee Kearsley went without the scoreboard moving, and Mark Fallon followed soon after. Neil Cordingley and John Rain steadied things

.and looked cosy until, on 155, Rain fell, and a dubi ous Ibw robbed Cordingley

of his wicket with 46 to his _ name. ■,

•: • ' With one over left out of

their allocation, Whalley surrendered tamely for 1&2. ; After tea, early wickets

were needed if the home team were to make it a con test, but apart from Cord ingley having Nick James caught by Sathish for four, it was all one way. ; Young Dewhurst played

a class innings that belied his age, with a constructive and quick 49, before he was hit by cramp and had to retire TOth a 50 at his mercy. At the other end, profes

sional Paul Turner played the perfect knock, and amassed 89, . before the ; introduction of Stephen Booth saw him hole out to

'Sathish with the points more or less won. Captain Neil Bolton and

■ Peter Dibb saw the visitors: home for the loss of just two wickets, with over three overs to spare, to record a comprehensive success. On'Sunday, Whalley,

went to Gincroft Lane look ing to make amends, but it was not be as Babeer Naeem produced another one-man show, as he racked

' up out 158 of 229. This, against a much- •

weakened Whalley bowling attack; with Cordlingley not fit to bowl and Fallon missing, meant Sathish did a full stint from one end. It’s a sad state of affairs

when the pro is turning down numerous singles, as he constantly did, and one partnership with Holt saw him take 91 of the 93 runs gathered, with Holt. He was finally dismissed

by the introduction of- Stephen Booth, who is

going through a good spell of form currently. ' Despite the total, Whal-.

ley more than fancied their, chances, in spite of a poor start, but they made a valiant effort despite losing , Sathish soon after openers Fitzhenry and Rain had gone, as had Cordingley, run out, when it appeared the stumps had not been broken by the ball.:: Sathish got one that

stopped on him and him got a leading edga Palmer and Kearsley

then set about rebuilding things, and were going along fine until Palmer got a dubious Ibw decision, that was nothing compared to two more later that cost Whalley.

: ' Booth joined Kearsley,. and they kept chipping; away, ‘"The Councillor” adding 29 before he too was: adjudged Ibw. , Nick Fieldien showed his

feisty attitude to push thing along further with Kearsley, before being run out. Kearsley was now in full

flow and looking for every opportunity to find the fence, when, on 79 and set ' to push on, he advanced down the track some way and was given the dreaded' trigger finger. Callum Mahon found the

fence twice as Whalley knew their chance had been taken away, but the biggest travesty of all was to come with the final wicket, . another Ibw, with Greg Jones, having hit a smart boundary, being hit at waist height going back to one.

CLITHEROE Cobras Under 11s prepare for another season.(s)

Read climb to fifth

READ moved fifth in the Ribblesdale League table after fine wins over reign ing champions Blackburn Northern and Clitheroe. First up, after knocking

out holders Northern in the Ramsbotfom Cup the previous week, the Whal ley Road men were chasing a double. Jon Harvey made the

breakthrough, as he trapped both openers Raf- fiq, without score, and Nasser Malik (24), by the time the scoreboard had clicked to 34.

. ' And Read looked set for a straightforward after noon as the wickets contin ued to fall at regular inter vals, shared between the home attack. Only Shahid provided

much in the way of resist ance as he hit a 55-ball 37, before being eighth man out at 115, caught by Har vey off Warren Eastham. . Mini Pathan followed at

126 as Kurt Smithson got in on the act, but Read were frustrated by the final pair. Mini Bhada and Ullah, as they batted out the final 10 overs, adding 30, to deny the locals the bowling points, and stretch the target for victory to 157. Harvey ended with 3-42

off his 16 overs, with East- ham (2-38), Smithson (2- 26) and Andrew Rushton (1-35) also in the wickets.; In reply. Read made

hard work of things with a middle order collapse which threatened to derail the locals, but they held on to win with two wickets and 2.2 overs to spare. Michael Whalley was

bowled by professional Nas Iqbal for 13 at 21, and both Nick Marsh (7) and Kyle O’Connor (0) were back in the pavilion for the addition of only two more runs. Harvey and Joe Mar

shall achored the reply, as they put on 93 for the fourth wicket, w th the lat ter racking up his half-cen tury off 80 balls; including eight fours. .

‘ He finaliy fell for 51 at

118, but Read, with six wickets remaining, includ ing Harvey, and 39 runs required, began to stutter. Harvey (36), Eastham, Andrew Turner and Elliot

'Artingstoll all fell, as Northern reduced the locals to 133-8, and began to sense v ic to ry them-

' selves. ^ But Rushton (13 not

out) and Andrew Laycock (12 not out), who hit three beautiful shots for fours, batted sensibly to see Read home. The following day, a

four-wicket haul from Smithson and half-cen turies from Marsh and . Turner saw Read defeat Clitheroe at Chatburn Road by seven wickets.,, Harvey again decided to

field after winning the toss, but he might have begun to regret that as in form Clitheroe paid man Paul Turner set to work on his third ton of the season.

, He iost Nick James for 29, caught by Andrew Turner off Eastham, but the former Eas t Lan cashire man and Peter Dibb pushed on towards 200, with a score of 300 looking a possibility. Dibb made 36 before

Turner again showed safe hands to pouch him off Smithson, with the score at 173. Smithson went on to

i claim figures of 4-54 off 14 overs, having Turner caught by Harvey for 106, as Read slowed Clitheroe down to a more gettable 214-7.

■, ' Read made an excellent

s tar t to their reply, as Marsh and Turner broke the back of the target , sharing 108 for the first \vicket. . '

"

, And -though Farouk Hussain saw off the pair, for 56 and 59 respectively, Harvey added 28 before being run out, and O’Con nor (33 not out) and Mar shall (21 n o t ou t ) saw Read over the line with 3.5 overs and seven wickets in hand. . Marsh’s 50 came off 90

balis, with six fours, with Turner’s half-century reached off just 52 balls, with eight boundaries.

' On Saturday, Settle were com fortably outplayed by Wanderers,. ; who punished some below-stari- dard bowling and fielding to clock up an imposing 256-6.

1' 'Scuderi, on his way to what

proved a inatch'-winning knock, was given a couple of liv^, and he ! certainly made Settle pay as he clocked up 133. And Wanderers made early

. inroads into the Settle reply, send-: ing both their openera back to the ' pavilion, leaving Scuderi’s former ; Colne team-mate Jeff:Ellis and: professional Bret Silvey to try and ; make an impression.

Silvey batted well, making an-’

excellent 101 in 111 balls, but no- one could stay with him long enough to make a serious dial- ■ l e n g e . ' I , : . Ellis and Robbie Preston con

including Scuderi after his ton the predousdaj'. Neither he nor Alistair Marsh

Walker’s delight at podium finish

VTialleybIqbal ....••....:V..I3 ’ .36

■JONATHAN Walker was delighted - if a little sur prised - to finish third in the second round of the British Super 1 Kart Championship..' The Ribchester driver had put in a storming drive

in the second of the day's two finals to finish in fourth place - but a driver's subsequent disqualification from second place m'oved him into a trophy-winning posi tion.

, ■ • "I couldn't ask for any more really," Walker said,

reflecting on tire fact that he'd previously stated that he needed a podium finish to kickstart his title ambi tions, after a disastrous first round of the UK's pre-

, mier karting Championship. , - . - He added: "Beforehand I did say 'If I'm not in the

top three in the Finals, it'll be a disaster'." Walker's day didn't start quite to plan. After start

ing from sixth on the grid, he'd got up to fourth place when on the last lap his chain snapped, putting him out on the spot. Things started to improve in the second heat, when

he took he took an excellent fifth after driving from the back of the field. In the tough first Final, the rising star was involved

1

in battles with three drivers - first with Nick Yelloly and later in the race with Elliott Burton and Sam Tordoff. At the finish. Walker crossed the line barely a tenth

of a second ahead of Tordoff, but behind Burton. "Considering I had a puncture for three quarters of

the race, eighth wasn't too bad," he said dryly. With his AMT team making changes to his kart's

set-up. Walker knew that he needed to produce some thing special in the second points-scoring race. He continued: "In the first final I didn’t have

enough 'waff, as we call it. I needed the sort of speed I'd had in the two heats - when I'd been second quick est in the first one, and fastest in the second." Whatever his mechanics did, it workedi

. In the second final. Walker, was in storming form.

Overtaking two karts in the first comer, he earned the praise of watching 2005 World Kart Champion, Oliv er Oakes for his aggressive start. Having climbed to fifth,Walker momentarily

dropped to sixth before reigning British champion Chris Rogers' exit caused by a seized motor put him back into fifth spot. After losing three places in one move, the clearly

rattled former race-leader, Mark Litchfield was under attack from Walker. ' With just three comers to go of the last lap. Walker

pulled off a superb move to wrest fourth place from Litchfield. Walker summed up the move by saying: "I tapped

Mark wide going into Fletcher's (comer). He'd braked really hard and I just ran into the back of him. It was n't intentional."

, :

And the drama ewas not yet over. During post race checks, Bradley was excluded

from second place for an administrative error in his paperwork. Promoted to thirrd. Walker has also moved into

Championship contention and is now lying in sixth place overall, just 31 points off the lead.

- With 50 points awarded for a win, he is confident that he can build on his PFi podium: "We head up to Rowrah (in Cumbria) for the next round and the last time I was there, I was fighting for the win. It's game- on now." • His website has been revamped and has details on

Walker’s delight

CLITHEROE Tennis Club A defeated Crow Wood B 3-1 to take four vital points in their title chase - but they didn’t have it all their own way in blustery con ditions. - ■ .

, . Derek Parrott and Phil Mileham were seldom at

their serene best and lost a tight first set 5-7, but seemed to have ridden the storm when they levelled at 6-2. However, their opponents hit a solid vein of form and took the final set despite a late rally by the . Clitheroe first pair. •

, PalmerlbwNaeem'.....;......9 - On the next court Steve Pym and Tony Bush were

in a no-nonsense frame of mind and coped seamlessly with the wind to take the game 6-3/6-1 with some thing to spare. The return match for Parrott and Mileham was

bizarre with them taking the first and final sets 6-1 and 6-0, but these sandwiched a tie break which they

. lost. Pym and Bush initially needed to battle with the top pair but then hit unstoppable form to close out 6- 3/6-0.
