Dad admits attack on daughtej> by Court Reporter
A CHATBURN man attacked his daughter because she was nagging him to prune the rose garden where his dead wife’s ashes were scattered. . Hyndburn magistrates heard that
Ralph Sunter (60), felt it would be disrespectful to the memory of his wife to interfere with the garden which had
attracted.adverse com
ment from neighbours because it had become overgrown. Sunter, of Robinson Street, plead
ed guilty to assaulting Karen Sunter. He was remanded on bail for the .
preparation of a pre-sentence report. Philippa White (prosecuting) said
there had been concerns about the ‘ state of the front garden and Miss Sunter had tried to discuss these with her father. “On this occasion she was trying to speak to him about sorting out
the garden and in particular the rose bushes,” said Mrs White. “He became aggressive and start
ed ranting and ra’ving.” Miss Sunter (35) decided to take
the dog for a walk while he calmed down, but when she returned he was still angry.
• . “She tried to reason Mth him but
he wouldn’t have it and took hold of her wrists and tried to push her down,” said Mrs White. “He followed her into the kitchen
and hit her on the top of her head with both fists. He then landed a series of slaps to the left side of her face. Sunter later told police: “She’s
been getting on my nerves about the bloody garden.” ■ He also told them the roses were of
sentimental value because his wife’s ashes were scattered there. Jonathan Taylor (defending) said
his client was genuinely remorseful for what had happened.
Village celebrates new play area opening ' “His wife died of cancer and he
has found it very difficult to cope with th a t ,” said Mr Taylor. “Because of comments made by neighbours, his daughter had been nagging him to sort out the garden. He did no t want to, because he believed interfering with that area would be disrespectful to his wife. “He accepts that he lost his tem
per and lashed out at his daughter. It is fair to say it has been a difficult time for both of them.”
