THE Bank Holiday weekend proved a busy one for music fans with the Leeds Festival and Cumbria’s Solfest drawing sell-out crowds. But on Sat urday, music with a meaning, could also be found on our v e ry own doorstep. The Grand, York Street, Clitheroe,

hosted an evening of live, local talent to raise funds for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Headlining were The Ragamuffins, a

fantastic four-piece from Lancashire, who, after forming only last year, have been offered dates around the country as well as abroad. . With their original song-writing, infec

tious riffs, and a 60s-esque sound, they filled The Grand with a range of catchy, upbeat material, only complemented by the venue’s impressive lights and multi- media displays. Infectious opener “Disco Biscuits” got'

people dancing, while the gorgeous ‘Jamaica Wool’ showed their real ability

a s musicians, as did a successful rap-. cover of Wiley’s “Rolex” (even if it was just for fun!). The Ragamuffins proved not to be just

another indie band, but one that appre ciates its roots and plays music together for the greater cause. Front man David Jaggs explained:

“After organising the event at The Grand, I received a thank you letter from an American man whose four-year-old daughter suffers from cystic fibrosis. It made me realise how important it is not only to entertain people with our music, but to use it to help others where we can.” Also on the bill was another Ribble

Valley ex-pat Nomad Jones, a former pupil of Ribblesdale High School, who lives in Manchester. He appeared as a well-established

Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, Thursday, August 28th, 2008 43 IS winner for band

THIS review has been written bv KAITLIN SULLIVAN ( 21), of Clilheroe, who is a former pupil of ■ Clitherne Royal Grammar School Sixth Form. Kahlin, who hopes to pursue a career in journalism, is about to st.-irt her final year at Newcastle University studying Media, Communication, and Cultural Studios.

singer/songwriter, performing his folksy, acoustic wonder-stuff, which has gained him regular dates in Dublin, and a set at this summer’s Glastonbury festival. Mark Duckworth was another “organ

ic” musician who performed. Reared on home soil, he certainly hadn’t lost his northern charm after spending the past few years in London. With his songs, too, inspired by the move, he also proved to have a very impressive voice at this “homecoming” gig. The whole evening was thoroughly

enjoyable and raised around £250 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Sophie Longton (21), of Read, who has

CF, explained on the evening how impor tant such events are for CF sufferers. “Not only do events like this raise

money, they also increase awareness of a condition which affects more than 8,000 people in the UK. Even though those like myself may look well on the outside, peo ple with CF face a hard battle to get through each and every day vvith regular medication and physiotherapy.” To get involved with the charity, visit

their website www.cftrust.org.uk, and to find out more about the artists who per formed at the event, or to download their latest music, visit their MySpace pages (www.myspace.com). Our picture shows Kaitlin Sullivan
