: predominantly; reserve side aslfr^yeark)ld Jake' Craven marked his debiit with two coolly-taken goals. " '

• r On a smooth pitch,' it was •; Barrowford; who made much of . the ruri-‘

<?■-

' ning‘during the first half,- as Hurst Grreii struggled to find their rhythm. C' - .' ■ - The yisitors took the lead from the'penalty spot as Briggs brought down a striker just inade thebox.

. , ■ ' ’

■ A ■ one-goal lead became: two: halfway, through the first period, : as the visitors worked the ball \yell down the Green right hand side and into the box, where the striker poked past the oncoming Wayne Addicott.

. - iThe home side were, slower to every ball and looked a yard short of pace, as the visitors \vere finding huge spaces wth alarming regularity. : Green’s only joy came

just on - half-time as Craven found himself free inside the box and slotted homa,

^ - : Green made several

changes at half-time, and Craven grabbed his sec ond of the game midivay through the half as he nonchalantly lobbed the stranded keeper from just outside the box.

>1 .- ' Chances for a winner-

were still very much at a premium, but Chippen dale-continued his bril liant pre-season as he somehow managed to turn a loose ball in when on the floor. The Reserves began'

their league campaign, last night at Goodshaw United, and play champi ons Worsthome oii Satim- day at Smithy Row. ; ; The first team begin

their quest for the title when they travel to play; Canberra on Saturday. ;

double is the key!

Clilheroe .......... ....-/ Salford City . . . . . . . 1 CRAIG Sargeson’s first half double was the ■ backbone behind this latest Blues victory. . An : accomplished

first half performance saw Clitheroe recover from an early setback to fire four goals. And th a t was more

than enough to hand them th e ir third straight victory, follow ing the opening day dis- appointnient against Mossley. With that 2-0 defeat

prompting a chorus of boos around some parts of Shawbridge, the home

su pp or ters

applauded th e ir side from the field this time around;

And for the second

time in three days over th e Bank Holiday weekend, Clitheroe recovered from falling behind early on to seal the three points. Clitheroe almost

opened the scoring in th e f i r s t 30 seconds, only for Sargeson to fire wide following Carl Lomax’s clever pass. But in Salford’s first

real a t ta c k , they did ; take the lead when Jon Robinson was put through and he fired past James Mann.. : The Blues responded

w e ll, with Bernard .: Morley stinging th e ; f in g e r tip s of James Campbell, and from the resulting corner, Ryan : Fisher headed straight

at the City keeper. ■ A quick break then

released Anthony John son, but his clever, ball across for Morley was blasted woefully wide by the former Salford player. But Clitheroe were

soon level, as Sargeson was played in down the left, and he fired past Campbell. Robinson almost

res tored C i ty ’s lead within a minute, head ing s traig ht a t Mann from Danny W h ite ’s cross. However, i t w a s

- CLITHEROE Hockey Club have added three more trophies to an impressive collection of sil- venvare. For the first time, the

first team moved up a level to the Manchester Belle 'Vue Leagues, after being runners-up at the Man chester Sale open in June. Clitheroe needed to fin

minutes just before the break virtually killed

■ the game as a contest, with first Lomax tak ing adv antage of a defensive mistake to slot into an empty net, and then Johnson pok ing home Scott Red head’s wonderful free kick. A somewhat subdued

second half saw Robin son fire wide, before Lomax curled two efforts over at the other end.

. S u b s t i tu te Chris

Ward came close with an angled drive,'but the Blues had done more than enough in the first half to seal the points.

ended prematurely for Flannery, as he was replaced by Danny Paton after having to receive stitches in a head wound. That injury came after

midfield. . Because of the change,

Clitheroe struggled to settle down in the early stages, and fell behind in the fourth minute when a defensive lapse allowed Andrew Catton to fire home at the back post. But the visitors slowly

started to find their feet, and almost levelled only tor Anthony Johnson to head Liam McManus’

both had chances, while Bernard Morley was instrumental in much of : the forward play. Ossett also hit the

woodwork before the break, but Clitheroe started the second half brightly and grabbed a. deserved equaliser just

, after, the hour. Sargeson’s corner was

met by Jonathan Smith, and after his goalbound header prompted a scramble in the area, Johnson eventually prod ded home. And seven minutes

later they were ahead, as another Sargeson corner ended up back at his feet.

ish in the top four of their 10 team pool to progress through to the finals night. They put in some strong

team performances to fin ish fourth, and had a tough drqw in the semi-finals against league favourites Urmston. The locals took the lead

with a thunderous reverse- stick strike from O’Don nell and then new player and penalty corner special ist, Mulcahy doubled the lead with an unstoppable strike; before Clitheroe made it 3-0 when O’Don nell skilfully weaved her way through the Urmston defence. The lead was soon 4-0

when Mulchay used her skill on the penalty corner routine to brilliantly find Dugdale, who deflected home a well-taken goal. Urmston pulled the

score back to 4-1, but this lifted Clitheroe, and mth- in a minute O’Donnell hit home to earn a place in the final. The final against Sale

and his cross was met by the head of Flannery, who headed home. From th a t point on,

the game became a niggly affair, and despite the match being far from a dirty affair, both sides ended up with 10 men. . Albion’s

.Martin

Allinson was the first to go after picking up two quickfire yellow cards, the second for a reckless challenge on Morley. . ' And that was followed

by the late dismissal of Scott Redhead, who also departed for two book ings. But despite that, the

Blues held off a late surge to record back-to-back away wins.

was end-to-end, with both goalkeepers making out standing saves. "When a penalty shoot

out looked inevitable, Clitheroe mounted one last attack, and O’Donnell picked up a loose ball and smashed home to capture the gold medals. Clitheroe then went to

Brookfields to play in a one-day tournament. Clitheroe were dra™ in

pool A, and strolled past 'Witton 5-1 and Brook- fields 12-1, before drawing 1-1 with Garstang. In the other pool, the

seconds lost 2-0 to Garstang, then put in a excellent performance to beat a strong Southport team 1-0, and narrowly, lost 1-0 to Chorley . Clitheroe went behind

to semi-final opponents Chorley on the stroke of half-time, and battled hard

to try and level the score. , With, 10 m in u |^ remaining Horsfalll\J)

. home a brilliant goal. In the final five minutes

Clitheroe piled on the pres sure and were rewarded with a fine team goal. In a great final,

Clitheroe were first to score, but Garstang responded within minutes and the score remained level a t half-time. Clitheroe took the lead

twice in the second half, with Garstang levelling on each occasion to force penalties.

,

. With Garstang up first, an outstanding save from Simpson, diving low into her bottom corner, gave Clitheroe the advantage* Horsfall then placed a w'ell-taken goal, putting Clitheroe in the lead, before Garstang scored their second.

\ Up stepped Mulchay,

with a broken firtger, and she used all her experience to flick the ball high into- the top corner.

| Simpson then saved bril

liantly again, with'p’Don- nell making the sdore 3-1 with another penalty high into the corner. 1 Garstang then scored,

meaning: th a t i f . the Clitheroe skipper scored, the game was woij, and Laverty scored an out standing penalty to win the tournament for the third consecutive year. The seconditeam lost

only one game on their way to the runners-up cup in the Leyland Summer League, missing out on the title by only two points. They pulled off some

major shocks bn the way, as did the third team, who were expected to finish near the foot of the 12- team table, but claimed seventh spot. The club is looking for a

local business to sponsor their teams and help the club take another step for ward, and continue to build their junior develop ment bringing sport to the community. If anyone would like to

join the club, or help with sponsorship, please contact Hannah (07855 337708) or email clitheroehockey- club@hotmail.co.uk

the Division Two prize. Ainsworth’s 71 was just one

shot too good for second placed GilesLawson.,

: Council Leader Michael Ran-

son might declare his third place prize when he took time out to post a nett 73 arid a better back nine than David Kitson who had to settle for fourth with the same score. Nett 70s by three competitors

filled the top three spots in the Midweek Medal and there.were comments of "what might have been", from all three after dropped shots at the last two holes. Paul Connolly topped the

leader board in spite of a double bogey, bogey finish having estab lished a solid round with an earli er three.birdies. John Fryer'crept into second

place courtesy of a better back nine over Jeff Crowther who was content to settle for third. ; The Three Man Team event'

went to the.wire as the winning trio of Trevor Jones, Simon Hale . and Geoff Sutcliffe produced two birdies on the 17th to finish with 78 points.

: Phil Hanson teamed-up with Barry Thomas and Tim Stanley: and finished two shots off-the :■ pace to take second place with 76.

Mytton Fold Golf Club had a

three-way tie at the top of their Eurotrophy competition leader- board on Saturday. Bob Scott .squeezed home
