WHALLEY enjoyed a glorious weekend as they successfully, defended their Ribblesdale League Twen- ty/20 crown on Bank Holi day Monday, after two league wins maintained their LCB Knockout chase. ^ Having won the 20-over

blast last year, Whalley travelled to Gincroft Lane to face Edenfield, two days after their league win over the same opposition at Station Road, and restrict ed their hosts to 154-7. ' Although Brett Storey

made 48, the key for the locals was getting Babar Naeem for 18, with Neil Cordingley having the pro- ■

fessional caught by Declan Fitzhenry after an opening stand worth 40. Adam Barnes added 21

and Paul 27, but Fitzhen ry and Stephen Booth took two wickets apiece to slow the run rate. In reply, despite losing

Cordingley first ball, Mark Fallon and professional Rajagopal Sathish put on 59 for the second wicket. Sathish made 47 off 26

balls, while Fallon hit 30 off 34.

Fitzhenry's contribution

proved vital though, as he smashed the ball to all parts for a 33-ball 44. Lee Kearsley added an unbeaten 16 to see Whal

ley over the line with nine balls and five wickets to spare. , Two days earlier, Whal

ley skittled Edenfield for just 90 before earning a six-wicket win. Again, Naeem was cut

short in his prime, as Cord ingley again removed the pro for 25. That proved to be Eden-

field’s top score, with only Greg Smithson (24) and Jamie Kelly (17) making double figures, as Fitzhen ry claimed a superb 4-12 off 7.1 overs. Whalley took less than

22 overs to knock off the winning runs, with Cord ingley (31) and Sathish

Magnificent seven for former skipper

A MAGNIFICENT seven from Warren Eastham gave Read renewed hope of an LCB Knockout berth. After defeat to Clitheroe

on Saturday, he picked up 7-36 on Sunday to help record a 61-run success at Edenfield.

• And not only did it vir

tually end their hosts’ Rib blesdale League title hopes, but it'enhanced their own aspirations of a cup spot next season. With Padiham having

lifted the Ramsbottom Cup, and currently sitting in second spot, it is thought there will be five LCB Knockout spots on offer for next season. And despite Read cur

rently sitting sixth, the Whalley Road side are just five points behind Whalley and a further two adrift of Sunday’s opponents Eden field. Eastham was a t the

heart of that win, bowling unchanged at one end as the home line-up had no answer to him. After posting 165-8,

home professional Babar Naeem saw the first two balls of the reply go by the wayside. Eastham was then smashed for two consecu tive sixes by the home pro fessional, before, with the fifth ball Eastham had him caught by Andrew

Warren Eastham

Turner. The rest of the top order

followed soon after, as Eastham took five of the top six batsman. Jamie Kelly (16) was

the first batsman to really offer any kind of resist ance, before Leighton Paul (38) sent Read pulses rac ing with a swashbuckling 38.

But it was all to no

avail, as Eastham came back to mop up the tail and hand Read victory. Earlier, Nick Marsh had

set a solid foundation with a knock of 38 at the top of the order, while Joey Mar shall cracked 34 off just 24 balls in the middle. That innings included

three fours and three sixes, while Eastham himself smashed five sixes in a 25- ball 35. But all that came after

Read had lost their local derby with Clitheroe on Saturday by 70 runs.

With Clitheroe having

posted 257, it was always going to be an uphill strug gle for the home side. And with the rain bring

ing a premature end to proceedings. Read were 119-8 after 29 overs, well below the 189 asking rate at that point. And it was all down to a

175-run opening partner ship between visiting pro fessional Paul Turner and Nick James, with the for mer dropped on 25 before going on to make 106. James made 85, but

despite only Neil Bolton (14) and Danny Glover (28) making double figures of the rest of the order,

• their total proved more than ample. Only Jon Harvey, who

hit a swashbuckling 69 including a 50'that includ ed 10 fours and a six, and Michael Whalley (22) reg istered any kind of score, as wickets fell cheaply from the off. Nick Marsh failed to

score, as did Kyle O’Con nor, while the middle order crumbled thanks to four wickets from Glover. But they more than

made up for it the follow ing day at Edenfield, and will hope for more of the same when they host Whalley on Saturday (wickets pitched 1-30 p.m.)..

(44) doing the damage. The locals’ bowling

strength was emphasised on Sunday as third-place Baxenden were put to the sword, with Fallon claim ing seven wickets in a 24- run victory. Whalley took first

knock and rattled up 160- 9 off their 45 overs, with Sathish the mainstay with 40, while there were other fine contributions from Kearsley (24), Martin Davies (22), skipper Richard Palmer (19) and Gregory Jones (14 not out). Dominic Bulcock took

4-29 for Baxenden, with professional Will Purser

(3-64) and Ian Austin (2- 37).

' I t was nip and tuck in

Baxenden’s reply, but Fal lon came up trumps for Whalley, taking 7-36 off 11.1 overs. Callum Waddington

made 50 for the home side, but with Cordingley, David O’Neill and Sathish also chipping in with a wicket each, he found little in the way of support. Opener Austin (20),

Mark Rishton (17) and Purser (19) tried to back up his efforts, but Fallon wrapped the game up with 3.5 overs to spare. Whalley are at Read on Saturday.

Wanderers fail in cup revenge bid

RIBBLESDALE Wander ers were unable to avenge their Ramsbottom Cup Final defeat against Padi ham, as Kashif Siddique bowled his side to victory on Sunday to keep them in sight of a first league title in nine years. Siddique, in his fifth sea

son at the Arbories, gave another commanding dis play, with his 6-36 his best bowling haul of the cam paign to date, remarkably, the eighth time he has grabbed five or more wick ets in a league match this season. Wanderers simply had

no answer, as he bowled unchanged with Naveed Ashraf, who also weighed in with an impressive haul of 4-51. Defending a total of

157-8, Joe Scuderi carried his bat throughout the vis itors’ reply, opening the batting with Alastair Marsh and finishing unbeaten on 41. But Marsh was the only

other batsman to enter double figures, hitting 20 before his team-mates came and went in spectac ular fashion. Earlier. Siddique’s 51

had come off just 53 balls, including three fours and three sixes. UmarSaddique (39) and

Anthony Hall (34) also chipped in, with the former

intervals, with only Joe Bolton (13) entering dou ble figures. And their end total

proved insufficient, as the locals reached their target in less than 25 overs. The previous day. Wan

derers went down to Great Hanvood in a rain-affected game, despite five wickets from Barry Spencer. Marsh’s side had first

Joe Scuderi

hitting seven fours and a six in his 30-ball knock. As for Saturday, Sid

dique blitzed 75 off 64 balls to help Padiham overpower Cherry Tree by eight wickets.' ' Six fours and four sixes

came from his willow, with Peter Shirtcliffe also doing his bit with an unbeaten 27.

And all that after Sid

dique and Umar Saddique had each grabbed three wickets, to help restrict the home side to 160-7. Padiham grabbed the

perfect start with the wick et of Mark Hadfield to the first ball of the game, before the home side fought back with a 122-run • partnership for the second wicket between Scott Friend (70) and profession al Saleem Mughal (62).- But once those two fell, wickets tumbled at regular

use of the wicket at Church Meadow, with Scuderi again the main stay of the innings. He carried his bat

throughout the 45 overs for a 113-ball 65, including four boundaries, but he found little support until partnered by number eight batsman Stephen Kerr, the only other player to reach double figures. Kerr biffed his way to 33

off 24 balls, as Wanderers closed on 124-7, denying Harwood the bowling points. Spencer bowled nice and

straight in defending that total, with three victims bowled, one trapped Ibw arid the other caught behind.

• However, visiting cap tain Alan Armor’s 64 proved crucial, as Har wood passed the target with two rvickets in hand. On Saturday, Ribbles

dale Wanderers are at home to Barnoldswick.

Duo in the runs in Glitheroe’s nail-biting win

CLITHEROE added to. their derby win over Read with a nail-biting triumph over bottom side Oswaldtwistle Immanuel. Neil Bolton’s side looked

to have done the business with the bat, with profes sional Paul Turner moving to within 26 runs of 1,000 in the league with a 61-ball 51, while Peter Dibb ■ crashed 73 off 85 deliveries

as the home side closed on 195-7 in a match reduced to 40 overs. . But Immanuel put up a fight in reply, finishing six

. runs short, with one wicket to spare. Clitheroe built a solid foundation, with Turner

■ and Nick James sharing 37 for the first wicket,’ and Dibb helped Turner move the score on to 88 before the

pro was bowled for the first of Imran Abid’s four vie- ■ tims. Dibb and Jack

Dewhurst added 67 for the third wicket, but Gerard Metcalf removed the pair, with Dewhurst making 22.

■ Dan Glover added a rapid 15 as Clitheroo post ed a decent total. ■ However, Oswald- twistle’s openers Oliver

Clare and pro Andrew Kerr made inroads, shar ing 82. Fafouk Hussain had

Kerr stumped by James for 27, and also saw off Clare (47) shortly after with a return catch, as he claimed the first two of a four-wicket haul. . ■ ■ Daniel (15)'and Gerard Metcalf’(lO) made starts, •but it was Mitch Taylor

who gave Immanuel hope with a 35-ball 55, smash ing five fours and two sixes to put his side back in con tention. , He struggled for any sig nificant support, however, and was left high and dry, unbeaten at the close, with Immanuel on 189-9.
