THROUGHOUT the c o u r s e -o f a year,., dozens of pupils from schools throughout the Kibble 'Valley spend a week in the newsroom of the Clitheroe Advertiser and .Times. Some go on to pursue careers in journalism, others embark on media-related degrees. All are asked to com pile a feature on any su b je c t which then goes forward to the annual Tim Procter Memorial Award. Clitheroe Royal
Grammar School pupil Abigail "Watson (pic tured) joined us for a week during her school holidays and has writ ten about the time she spent behind-the- scenes of the House of Commons.
ON April 16th I walked nervously up to a securi ty machine and while handing over my bag I asked for Nigel Evan’s office. I explained that I was
in London on work expe rience, to get an insight into the workings of Government and into the running of the Kib ble Valley. I remember being
shown round the Houses ' of Parliament and being stood in the middle of ‘The Member’s Lobby’ surrounded by statues of previous Prime Minis ters - noting Winston Churchill’s unusually shiny boot toe, thanks ' to a tradition among
,MP’s of rubbing it for luck. The House of Commons contained rows of dark ■ wood benches, backed in a rich, green leather. I was
surprised.at how small the room w a s - i t does- n’t quite fit all
the.MPs in apparently, making the room rather comfy
during fully-attended votes. I was told that an alarm, sounds in the
offices to call MPs to vote, meaning everyone else must avoid lifts so that frantic Members of Parliament can reach the House in time. The House of Lords
seemed, in contrast, to glint with gold and red, echoing worth about its • walls. A grand, red wool- ■ sack sits in the centre - ■/ usually holding the Lord Speaker. - The walkway leading
away is'/dotted with.: bikes ( I. must/admit' being disappointed at not seeing David Cameron’s bike at the time, so I could try and'
■spot it 'again more- recently, ridden by its- new“owner”). - On reaching Portcullis
House I involuntarily craned my neck to look through the impressive, glass roof, as showers trickled down the slop ing sides, leaving the people inside dry and. oblivious, as they busied ‘
, about paperwork. The; corridors on which the MPs’ offices were based / reminded me of' the secret passageways in; eccentric, old houses.
with each door seeming ly blending into the wall’s wood'panelling. • The office was split
into two halves, with the researchers working on one side. My desk
looked on to the London Eye and I remember
seeing it out the corner of my eye while working, every so often acknowl edging it with a glance. ■ I did a lot of con
stituency work: dealing with letters, invitations , and leaflets; each com-
■ment, ; request and- protest requiring an individual and careful , response. I went during recess, which is the qui etest point of the sea- , son, however, the. i researchers were still
busy sorting out the. RibbleValley’sprob-
/lems;. • L really enjoyed r ^ i l
- time at the offices r a | Portcullis House and felt :
'it gave me a really good - idea about what is done
-behind-The; scenes of;,
./Government and, more importantly, what Nigel ,
Evans, ' and h's researchers, do for the
