THE funeral service of a Clitheroe man, who invented the phrase “Action Replay”, will take place next Wednes
day. A former editor of the
Clitheroe Advertiser and Times, Mr Bryan Cowgill (pictured) collapsed and died a t home in Stratford-upon- Avon aged 81. He joined the BBC in 1955
as a production assistant and rose through the ranks - even tually becoming controller of BBCl.
. By the time he was 35,
after just seven years at the BBC, he was made head of sport and introduced slow- motion repeats, giving them the name “action replays” during coverage of the 1966 World Cup. A legendary founder of
T'V’s “Grandstand” , his career went on to include a long list of achievements and landmarks in television histo ry.
Among them were three
BAFTA awards for his out standing outside broadcast on the 1966 World Cup and two Olympic games. . In 1977 Mr Cowgill was
promoted to the newly-creat ed job of Director of News and Current Affairs, with a seat on the BBC’s board of management. But before he could take up the post, Thames Television offered the job of managing director. On retirement, he and his
wife, Jenny, initially lived in Bolton-By-Bowland before mo-ving back to the south. His brother, Mr John
Cowgill, who still lives in Clitheroe, has paid tribute: “I remember Bryan as a very strong character. He could be volatile in nature and he did not suffer fools gladly. When he did something, it had to have as near a perfect end result as possible. - “Obviously because of work
he spent much of his life in th e south, but he always enjoyed re--visiting Clitheroe and he came back to live in

Bolton-by-Bowland a few years ago after retirement. “He moved to Stratford-
upon-Avon about six years ago with his wife, Jen, to be near his two sons, Jon and Tom, and his four grandchil dren whom he adored. “He and I became closer
through adversity. Bryan and Jen were a tower of strength to me when my wife, Anne, died from motor neurone dis ease just over four years ago. I used to stay with them in Stratford every eight weeks or so when he would reminisce abo u t th e old days in Clitheroe. “They stayed with me only
three weeks ago and Bryan was in very good form that weekend and really seemed to enjoy his visit. I t came as a great shock that he had sud denly collapsed and died. “Although he had travelled
the world over meeting kings, queens, heads of s ta te and international sportmen and women, it hardly changed his personality. “Bryan probably fulfilled
one of his greatest ambitions when his autobiography was published a couple of years ago. “I and all the family will
certainly miss him, but I am sure his contribution to televi sion in this country will be remembered for many years to come.” The funeral service will
take place at 1 p.m. at Strat ford-upon-Avon Crematori um (family only). This will be followed by a service of thanksgiving at 2 p.m. at Holy Trinity Church, Strat ford-upon-Avon, (s) ..
