Something to help while away

the winter blues IF you are looking for a new interest to fill the coming winter months, why not consider amateur dramatics? ' ; Whether treading the boards or help

ing out behind the scenes, Clitheroe Operatic and Dramatic Society is ahvays on the lookout for new people to join its happy ranks. Its next produc tion, to be staged early next year, is “Chess”, with a musical score by Benny and Bjorn, from ABBA, and lyrics-by Tim Rice. Among the hit songs from the West End musical are “I Know Him So Well” , “One Night in Bangkok” and “Pity the Child”. Planning for the show, to be directed

by Howard Raw, is already well in hand, with an enrolment night sched uled for Thursday, August 28th, at the St Mary’s Centre, in Church Brow, Glitheroe. I t begins at 7-30 p.m. and anyone wanting to find out more about the society and perhaps get involved is welcome to go along. The main acting auditions for “Chess” are planned for early October.

Hay Fever: Royal Exchange until August 9th

If you are depressed by credit crunches, rising prices and gloomy forecasts, forget it all and treat yourself to a few hours of pleasure and laughter at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester. Greg Hersov’s production of Noel

Coward’s sparkling comedy, “Hay Fever”, is a delight.: Recently retired actress Judith Bliss

Farewell to a colleague

STAFF at the Clitheroe Physiothera py Centre gathered to wish a much loved colleague and friend a very happy retirement.

-■ : ■ - •

• Carol McTear retired after working 25 years'for the NHS. In her earlier years, she worked as a physiotherapy, assistant at Brockhall-Hospital and . also provided cover at Ribchester Hos p i t a l . . ■

- ; For the majority of her working

years, she worked at the Clitheroe Physiotherapy Centre, in Market ;

' Street. She initially worked as a phys-; iotherapy assistant, however, due to changes in the NHS, the role evolved into'a more clerical position to meet -

:. the demands of modern healthcare. • • ' Commenting on her commitment to.

w o rk and dedication, senior physio-. : therapist Mrs Janet Whittaker, said; “Carol has worked extremely hard to ensure the smooth running of the physiotherapy department.-

■ “She is known to many people local-

ly who came fnto contac t with her through her job. “Her efforts were much appreciated

by the many: patients she dealt with'- over the years. “She will be missed by her colleagues '

and friends at the physiotherapy centre, who wish her and her fiance; Paul (who

also retired at the same time), a long and very fulfilling retirement. -

; : “The couple have already spent five weeks visiting the States following their retirement!”- . . - ■ Our picture shows Carol with friends:

and colleagues at the retirement pres entation. (S130608/6) : ..... •

Treves), athletic young Sandy (Simon Bubb), sophisticated man-eater Myra (Lysette Anthony) and nervous flap-

;per Jackie (Dorothea Myer-Bennett). The p la y involves all kinds of

Tvickedly funny twists in relationships, mostly masterminded by Judith, a wonderfully comic performance from Belinda Lang as the doyenne of the theatre, still acting everything to the hilt. Coward gives us a whole host of

wildly eccentric characters and a plot that cleverly combines predictability with outrageous convolutions. Apparently, a t the age. of 24, he

wrote the script in three days. The Royal Exchange gives us a styl-.

ish production in its superb auditori um. Everything is suitably exquisite,

the costumes are to-die-for, the set is marvellous, the whole cast are excel lent including Tessa Bell-Briggs as Clara, formerly Judith’s dresser and now her somewhat truculent house keeper.

' . Perhaps some might carp that Cow

ard’s plays are outdated, but they are so briiliantly clever and funny. One can spot some hints of his “Private Lives”, written some years later.

• • Drama can challenge, provoke and

torment but it can also entertain and this production is an evening of joy, escape and wit. Go on, spoil yourself! You’re worth it! -See the blissful Bliss family. ■ ' . ■
