UMBRELLAS were out in : force, but unseasonal down pours did nothing to damp en the spirits of pupils and sta ff who enjoyed every minute of their leavers’ ball. Record number of pupils

from St Augustine’s RC High School, Billington, cel ebrated the “Class of 2008” in stylish evening gowns and tuxedos a t M y t ton Fold Hotel, Langho. The event started with

some imaginative entrances with teenagers arriving in weird and wonderful vehicles including a fire-engine, a Victorian horse-drawn car

riage, a DeLorean (which took everybody’s breath away) and even a wheelbar row! ■ Dinner was followed by

speeches and a disco. Guests included chairman

of governors Father Edmund Willoughby, SJ and recently retired deputy head, Mr Bob Aston.

■ Students cheered Mr Zen Ciezarek, the school’s assis tant headteacher and long standing Head of Year 11, who will be giving up the role from September to take on other responsibilities wthin the school.

headteacher Whalley Primary School

PUPILS a t Whalley Primary School again proved they have a flair for top-class acts of musical plays in their three per formances of “The Rocky. Monster Show”.

' Year 6 teacher Mr Richard Blackburn

had challenged his class to learn leading parts th a t would stretch many adult actors and their responses were magnifi cent.

Joe Macfarlane was brilliant as the

Mad Professor Fenton, a role that also showed his strength as a solo singer in “Great Balls of Fire”. ■ • ■ Claudia Maybury was charmingly sin

ister as Mrs Danvers, with William Milli gan (Igor) her splendid manservant, James Kenny (Dan) and Lauren Bibby (Rebecca) had great fun as youngsters who innocently became involved in the

horror-stricken castle, and Mitchel Starkie was splendid as the eccentric Sta- tionmaster. Elliot Jenkinson played the part of Insp. Baskerville with great matu rity, and Lydia Hoggatt loved showing the audience how a boy-mad teenager might behave! Even Elvis made an appearance, with Dominic Telford’s uncannily accurate

impersonation of “the King”. Costumes, make-up and props

enhanced the comedy/horror atmosphere, and visually perfect monsters, such as those played by Kara Lord and Joshua^ Gilloway, were in the Addams^ Family/Munsters tradition.. Kristian Chambers, Daniel Grange,

Isaac Tranmer and Harvey Whittaker were a totally reliable team of Narrators. All 40 members of Year 6 took part in

. aspects of the play and all gave their best. The chorus was provided by the remainder of the Key Stage 2 children, (s)

REPAIR work is being carried out

at Whalley Parish Church. - . ■ - v The church has been covered with

scaffolding recently as work has been undertaken to prevent getting in. v Every five years the popular church is

subject to an inspection to ensure that the building is kept in good repair. The 2005 report drew attention to sev

eral areas where water was finding a way in causing damp patches. The repairs have cost £70,000, a

major part of which was the cost of the scaffolding as required by current Health and Safety regulations. Churchwarden Mr Clifford Ball said

that the church has had to pay for these repairs because it is not eligible for any grants for general maintenance repairs. The work includes rep airs to the

pointing to the tower, repairs to the dormer windows, repainting the clock face and specialist stonework repairs to the windows. The east window requires further

work and a complete survey has been undertaken by the church’s architect in readiness for an application for grant aid to undertake these repairs. The scaffolding has now been removed

letting light into the beautiful chancel once again.

. The next inspection will be in 2010.

and it is hoped th a t no further major' repairs to the fabric will be required.
