Greats w in fo r Cobras

IN a rain affected game, reduced'to 16 overs',' Clitheroe Cobras Under 15 (2), produced an excellent performance to ; chase.-,:dowii the Oswaldtwistle total of 79. - Oswaldtwistle domi

nated the early exchanges and looked set for a;large score before Bowness (3-20): ti l te d i th e ' game the Cobras’, way. ■ Following previous poor attempts when chasing totals, Clitheroe struggled for a while after lo'sing the early^ wicket of Neville. ■ However, a period of

t-S.’'

consolidation; followed ■ by some controlled hit ting by Parkinson (30 not out) and Scott (30; not out) ^tobkvsthe Cobras to the verge of; victory. The five - runs

required in the lak over were scrambled;with a couple of:baIls to spare leaving the Cobras wor thy winners. _'

■ Batting failures cost

Clitheroe Cobras Under 18s against Whalley. 'With three of the top

four batsmen scoring two between them, the Cobras couldn’t post a high enough target to defend successfully against the visitors. ■, ■ , Liam Nuttall batted

well for 20, as the hosts' struggled to 33-6 after 12 of the'allotted 18 overs. > Bradley Geelan (17) provided some stability, while Ross Dent’s sCur-: lying between the wick ets added a late flurry for 21, but the total of: 75 never looked enough. Taylor (2r7) and Fur-

longer (2-ll);were the pick, of -Whalley’s bowlers. ■ Thanks to a miserly

opening four overs from, JameS;!, Scotta(0-3)i Whalley,: made’slow progress towards the- target,'as Robinson and Stinson combined,to snap up Ainsworth for six,::;:‘and;%Kilkenny;, bowled Taylor for 16,: the first of his four, vic tims for 15 runs. ■ However, strong bat-,

ting from'Keighley (31 not out retired) laid the foundation ' for the ■\Vhalley middle order to see them home to a five-; wicket victory.

Read duo pile on winning runs

: READ consolidated their- position in the top half of the Veka Ribblesdale League table when they beat Ribblesdale Wander ers by 35 runs on Saturday. But the results left their

vanquished visitors floun- - dering near the foot of the table. No play was possible

until 3-15 p.m. and play was, therefore, restricted to 31 overs per side. And the Wanderers had

no hesitation in asking . Read to bat once play got underway.

- Professional Joe Scuderi .

and Barry Spencer bowled :. unchanged for Ribblesdale. But they could not pre

vent Read posting a defendable total.

Spencer struck twice

early on to, remove Michael Whalley (9) and Andrew Rushton (1). The paid man then got

. "

in on the act to remove Kyle O’Connor (17) and Joe Marshall (6), but the innings took a turn in a positive direction for Read when professional Jon Harvey and Andrew Turn er got together. ■ Harvey lasted just over

an hour and scored a run- a-ball 56 which included four fours and-two sixes before being bowled by Scuderi. And it was like watching

the Turner of old as he smashed 35 off just 17 deliveries before finding the safe hands of Gary Hunt off Scuderi. After their double . departure. Read managed

, : Clitheroe washed out

THERE was no play in the game between Clitherpe. and Veka Ribblesdale League title hopefuls Padiham- on Saturday.' The Chatburn Readers will be hoping to boost their lowly league position with a double-header of action at the weekend. On Saturday they travel to. Barnoldswick before entertaining Blackburn North ern on Sunday. ,

,

to bat out the innings out to close on a challenging 140-9. Scuderi finished with 5-

54 off 16 overs and Spencer 3-79 from 15. Wanderers needed a

solid s ta r t to challenge that total. But Rushton had Scud

eri caught hy Kyle O’Con nor for just eight and fel low opener Alastair Marsh was bowled by Elliott Lowes for five. Craig Hall amassed 23

before being run out. • And there were double figure contributions from Gary Hunt (10), Ryan Gladwin (17) and Russell Bradley (18 not out). But in the end the Read

bowlers kept a tight enough grip on proceed ings to ensure victory. Warren Eastham was

the pick of the bowlers with 4-19 from his six overs. Harvey paved the way

by only conceding 26 from 11 and Rushton claimed 3- 40 from nine. ; Read will hope to con

tinue their climb up the table when they travel to Settle on Saturday before entertaining league leaders

• ,

Great Harwood on Sun- day. And Wanderers will

hope to move away from the foot of the table as they come up against the two teams below them in

■ the table. : ■ On Saturday they host Oswaldtwistle Immanuel : before travelling to bottom

Whalley have rare off day

A RARE off day saw Whalley slump to defeat at the hands of Settle on Sat urday. A rain-affected

encounter saw the visitors- take the spoils by 21 runs. ' And it was an afternoon

where none of the Station Road batsman stepped up to the plate.

• Only four boundaries

were scored in the entire innings, chasing Settle’s ; score of 144-5.: . ■ , ■ And one of those was a maximum from profession al Rajagopal Sathish, who top-scored with just 28 from 33 deliveries. , , ^ : , The early dismissal - to the fourth ball of the reply

1 - of Neil Gordingley didn’t help, while Sathish was next to go after holing out. to Shaun Airey off Edward Read. With the batsman hav

ing crossed. Matt Hanson , faced the next delivery, but ■

•when it was time for Lee. Kearsley: to face a ball, he. : was out immediately when caught by Jeff Ellis off ; David Morrell. •

, And when Hanson fell

for 22, followed immediate-,^ ly by Declan Fitzhenry (20), the writing was on the wall. Richard .Palmer’s

■ (21) also weighed in with crucial runs at the death. And the total proved too

unbeaten 24 was the only, other highlight, as Whal-: ley struggled for any kind of rhythm all afternoon. Three wickets fell with-■

out a single run added to the total, as Jim Blair (5),’ Galium Mahon (0) q^nd Jame's Taylor- (0) all departed cheaply. -..

, • And it was Ellis who did

the damage, cleaning up the tail end with figures of 3-7 from his 3.5 overs. ■. • Earlier, an opening part

nership of 53 between Set tle professional Bret Silvey and Ellis laid the ground- - work for a decent score. . In . their reduced 29 overs, they kept the score ticking along at a respectable rate, with Ellis hitting three sixes before he was castled by Stephen Booth for 44. Paul Taylor also made

an unbeaten 35 off just 36 balls, while Robbie Preston

steep a mountain form Whalley to climb, as they hope for better this week end with a trip to league leaders Great Harwood on Saturday followed by a : home clash with Padiham

Golfers brave elements

ROYAL Birkdale was not the only wet and windy golf course over the week end. But it was business as

usual at Clitheroe Golf Club as members braved the elements. And none fared better

than Steve Dean who guided playing partner Tim Stanley to a 41-point total in the fourball stable- ford and first prize. Dave Kitson and

Richard Thompson lost out on a card play-off with the winners and had to set tle for second with the same score. ' The other Thompson,

Garry, and playing partner John Pawson produced 39

; points for third place. ■ . The single stableford on -

Sunday saw John Wetton claim the spoils in Division Cne with a solid 37 points. Archie Moro made a-

welcome return to the win ners’ enclosure by taking second prize but only after posting a better back nine than Scott Thompson vvith thesamescore. -

, Division Two saw Alan Houghton take top spot courtesy of a cracking, front nine of 21 points. ' Houghto-n’s 38 point

total gave him a two-shot ' margin over Nick Tomlin son and,Doug Wheatley was a further two shots away in third. , Alex Rigby is having a tremendous season but

nothing to date matches his nett 66 in the midweek medal. A back nine of one over

par gave him a three-shot advantage over second- placed Barry Thomas. Simon Sxvindells got the

better of his buddy Clive Wood after a card play-off for third place, both returning nett 70s. Chris Vines missed out on the prizes when a bogey six at the last gave him a nett 71. Mytton Fold held its

club qualifying round for the International Pairs competition over the week end with winners Steve Brooks and Phil Clegg . going forward to the regional final in Scotland in October. : • ; : . Should they progress

further, the following day they will play in the UK Final at Carnoustie. Their score of 44 points

beat the pairing of John Berry and Dave Clegg by a clear five points, while Ray Standring and Mark Green were beaten into third on a card play-off. . Dan Rodgers made a swift return to the win

ners’ enclosure at Whalley Golf Club. He carded 84-15-69 to

win the medal on Sunday and earn another handicap reduction; Trevor Thornber (80-

10-70) was runner-up, Craig Gornall (77-4-73) was third and Colin Elliott scooped the pool by scor ing the only two of the day. Once again the weather

tor Clitheroe Golf Club ladies’ day was cloudy and wet, but this did not deter a good turnout to play for the president's prize on Thursday.

' First prize went to Pat

Rees with a super score of 101-36-65. . ■ In second place-was

Sarah Hale (83-10-73) and third prize was won by Chris Stokes in a card play-off, with 78-5-73. .. ■ President Geoff Roberts

provided and presented the prizes and everyone had a most enjoyable day. Juniors a t ■ Whalley

enjoyed a stableford round with Aaron Ripley, win

ning a card play-off with Tom Tuley after both

scored 37 points. ■ - ■ Whalley in the last four

WHALLEY Tennis Club's mixed team reached the s finals of the mixed knockout cup as they continued' _ fine run form this season with a well-deserved victory over a strong Burnley team at Station Road. : : The Whalley team of Cathy Homes and Henry Far-

rer. Sue Liver and Tom Ormerod took the match by six sets to one before the visitors conceded the last set. ;
