REVIEW; “The Slumhle” , playing for Kibble Valley Ja zz and Blues Club a t T he S( M a ry ’s C en tre , Clitheroe.

THE first event of the new year organised by the Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues Club was a huge success and attracted the club’s best ever attendance. The St Mary’s Centre has

proved a superb venue for all the club’s gigs to-date. Music for the club’s New Year

Party was provided by Preston- based group “The Stumble”. They got off to a cracking start and con firmed from the first number why they are one of the UK’s leading blues groups. The six-piece band comprising

two guitars, saxophone, vocalist, bass and drums, specialise in no- nonsense Chicago-style urban blues. With singer Paul Melville in

commanding form leading from the front and fine backing from Simon Anthony on saxophones and Colin Black on lead guitar, and in fact the whole band, this was a great blues evening. The band played three sets

including a very effective all acoustic one, showing another side of their playing. To this listener they were particularly good on “I t ’s all over now baby” and “Georgia Sun”. With the hall packed, a very

satisfying hot-pot supper con sumed and the band in great form.
