Fm glad to see the back of all this centre nuisance

AS a resident of Church Street I am gladdened by the news that the Trinity Partner ship will no longer be involved in the running of the St Mary’s Centre. Under their tenure, the hall, which

St Mary’s Centre: latest letter to the Editor

should indeed be a valuable community resource, has become a mis-managed and amateurish project. The latest example was a drunken

party on Saturday evening which breached the licensing conditions attached to the hall - a party which, as is usual the staff failed properly to police and which led to misery well into the early hours for residents of Church Brow, Church Street and York Street. This even.t like many of its type since

Trinity took over, has singularly failed to display the Christian neighbourly ethos which Trinity professes. Events such as that of Saturday Janu

ary 19th have led to complaint after com plaint to the licensing authority, to the “management” (sic) of the Hall and to Mr Jackson. Assurances have frequently been given and promises made but rarely honoured. However, I have the perfect solution.

Parties and events involving the sale of liquor could be held at the former Grand Cinema.I understand the building is

sound-proofed, unlike the Parish Hall. There is a p[urpose- built bar. There is, may I suggest it, even space for a cinema. Residents of the Valley will well recall

the brouhaha when Mr Lancaster and his foundation rode to the rescue of the Grand Cinema, which had been in public ownership between 1993 and 2002, and which led to the purchase of the building by the Lancaster Foundation and which over the years has led to grants from RVBC of £23,244 and later £7,500. There may have been more. Now, eight years or so on, the Grand

Cinema in York Street remains closed and cinema provision in Clitheroe is ended. I ask this simple question: Would those volunteers who spent night after night in the early 90s preparing the cine ma for the opening of “Whistle Down the Wind” have given their time had they known that the Grand was to have been given up for its present purpose? The residents of the Ribble Valley

could be forgiven for misunderstanding that the use of the Parish Hall was to be but a temporary measure pending restoration of the Grand. Now that the Grand is restored why

can it not be the place for the community sought after by Mr Suttie and others? NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED

Trinity: The future

A MEMBER of the Board of Trustees at the Trinity Partnership has not denied that there have been problems surround ing St Mary’s Centre. Although he has not yet seen the con

tents of the letter above, Mr Ian Brown confirmed that there had been issues and said that steps were being taken. There would be no bar at tomorrow

night’s event featuring the CRGS Swing Band and the Eric Ainsworth Quartet. Trinity’s involvement with the St

Mary’s Centre will end in March. Mr Brown, a member of Trinity’s

board of trustees, confirmed that the sit uation surrounding the parish church hall had not changed. He said Trinity had taken on the St

Mary’s Centre with a view to it becom ing an arts centre, subject to funding from various sources. However, Mr Brown said the main

funding source had fallen through for a number of reasons and, as a result, Trin ity had decided to pull out of the facility. Said Mr Brown: “Trinity is a social

enterprise and it was an ambitious plan to build an arts centre but that is now not going to be. “As far as Trinity goes, it has gone through a difficult time, particularly due

AN article on page 21 of last week’s Clitheroe Advertiser urged more Valley villages to get involved with the Lan cashire Best Kept Village Competition, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary. Unfortunately, there was an error in

the article, which referred to a judges’ conference at Chipping Village Hall on May ISth.That event is planned for Sat

to the St Mary’s Centre which has been a drain on the finances. “Trinity did go through a difficult

stage before Christmas. We are not quite out of the woods but, long term, we have a strong board and we are going to turn it around. “We have a lot of things in place to

make sure nothing happens to Trinity as it does a lot of good. The main thing is that Trinity moves forward and we have a determination to move Trinity for ward. “We have had a meeting with projects

managers and staff and told them exact ly what is going on and everyone is mov ing forward at Trinity with one aim in mind. It has been quite enlightening.” Mr Brown also confirmed that Geoff

Jackson, who is employed by Lancashire County Council, currently had no involvement in Trinity or any of its proj ects. Said Mr Brown: “There is no hidden

agenda or anything secret.” He added that a meeting was taking

place later this week or early next week with the parish church trustees to ensure the transition at the end of March is as easy as possible.

Villages contest seeking judges

urday, May 10th, and will include a mock judging exercise around the village. Organisers of the competition are seek ing more volunteer judges with a meet ing for anyone interested at Bilsborrow Village Hall on March 31st at 7-30 p.m. Anyone wanting more information on

how to enter the competition or volun teer as a judge can call Jeanette Lowe on 01257 481415.
