find the best landscape architects and public realm designers in the world to create outstanding public spaces at the heart of six towns: Burnley, Accring­ ton, Blackburn, Bacup, Clitheroe and Nelson. Representatives from all six towns,


the North West Development Agency, Elevate, the Landscape Institute who are running the competition, and gov­ ernment design advisors CABE, attended the recent launch of the detailed competition brief. Chair of the judging panel Stephen


Hodder MBE told guests: “This is the launch of probably the most ambitious and aspirational competition for the design of new public squares that this country has witnessed.. “The competition is unique in bring­


ing together a strong partnership of local authorities and has attracted tremendous interest from all over the globe.” -

garden gives the children hands-on learning, says Mrs Wood. She added: “The children love being


outside and getting involved. “Teaching the children about healthy


eating and organic growing is very important. “We are thrilled that the project is so successful and enjoyed by the pupils.


“This year they managed to improve


the garden by adding raised beds and a greenhouse,' enabling them to grotv a wide range of organic vegetables. • “Carrots, potatoes, runner beans,


onions and salad items are just some of them.”


She went on to say: “Recently, the


children held a fund-raiser to raise money for an orchard. “They managed to buy some fruit


trees, which made a brilliant addition to the future of the project. “The children continue to enjoy tak­


ing part.”
