What happened to rustic charm?
THAT.most esteemed engineer Brunei would surely have been justifi ably proud of the gargantuan struc ture which has replaced Spring Bridge at Low Moor. ■ I’m sure he would have readily visu
alised some Great Western steam engine thundering across its span towards Clitheroe Station. Is this real ly a footbrid^ or might we once again witness the age of steam? What was wrong with building a
V
replacement bridge of similar propor tions to its forerunner? At least a decent view was available. Rustic charm has now given way to a huge timber skeleton totally at odds with the local environment.- The idea of it improving with age,
mellowing to a silver grey, I find as hard to grasp as the handrail itself, which is so splintered as to be posi-- tively dangerous.'
.. - . Finally, will the true cost of this
project ever be made known to the Clitheroe ratepayers?

I am wondering if you knew those fells as well as I did, because our farm was the first farm below Champion Com mon and I have seen those fells in all their moods and colours, even deep mauve, yet not with heather. “There is still Catlow Fell, New

the Luftwaffe deny, access. Yet there are stiles and a footpath for the anglers. We''may respect anglers.
•What percentage of the public are anglers? Nature is for all to appreciate. Don’t blame the anglers. Over-posses sive farmers - some, a few of them - and, presumably at their behest, overzealous bailiffs deny access. There is no law of trespass in this

What you need is
people power! IT may have come to your notice that rumblings continue with
regards to the jet engine that used to be on the platform of Clitheroe Sta
tion. Being bom in Waddington and edu
cated at Ribblesdale Senior School in the 1930s and Blackburn Municipal College in the 1940s, I still have affec tion for the area. Having begun work in 1942 at
Waterloo Mill with Rover Company: on Frank Whittle’s jet engine, many co-workers, still resident in Clitheroe, often contact me on matters of the jet engine. They currently report that there is some resistance by staff of the Castle Museum, to include a jet engine within their present museum renovations. It seems natural in today’s society
to resist certain items as “ old hat” , saying who wants to see an old jet engine anyway. May I remind readers that wise people of the past have said “ignore your country’s history at your peril”. .. In Derby city we have an extensive
museum display of old engines - steam, petrol and jet. This museum is separate to our other city museum and library. Rolls-Royce pic also has, within its
factory, a huge display of engines from Sir Henry’s day to the giant Trent jet engine. When airline customers visit to sign a multi-million dollar order, they always ask to see the “ old engine” display, which incidentally
As-I said Rolls-Royce Heritage i
Trust, in Derby, are sympathetic to the provision of a suitable engine I am 82, but next spring I hope to vidt Clitheroe for a few days with my daughter and hope to see a jet engine plus other items of interest.
