WORLD Superbike Champi onship leader Troy Bayliss and Ryuichi Kiyonari grabbed the headlines a t Bonington on Sunday. But on the same day at the
famous Derby track, a Clitheroe rider was claiming some of the glory for himself. Lee Cutts-Bland, who rides
for the Thundersport GB team on his Ducati 1098, enjoyed one of his best weekends of the season m the support races for the WSB round, to put himself back in contention for the Sound of Thunder title. The 35-year-old was third in
class m race one, before earning a win in race two. And, ahead of this weekend’s
round at Anglesey, where there are 75 points of the 100 remaining in the championship available to win, Lee has put himself right back in the run ning. His performance came hot
on the heels of his efforts in the previous round at Pembrey. Lee Reveley needed to'win
all three races and have other results go his way to take the title there and then, but Lee again saw the top step of the podium and claimed 65 points from 75 to keep alive his hopes. His results at Bonington put
further pressure on Reveley, and Lee said: “The eyes of the world were on Bonington on Sunday, and it was great to come away with a lot of points. “I was a good few points
down in second place before this weekend, but now I’m back in the running. “I ’ve been racing for five
years, and this is probably my best year so far. . “Motorbikes have always
been'my hobby, and it’s been a cracking season for me. “I’ve had some really good
results, winning the first meet ing at Oulton Park, and now
this has capped it off.” And Lee described the races
at Bonington: “In the first race, the rider I was chasing down came off at Coppice, and I had to take avoiding action to miss him. “When I esme back onto the
circuit, I was dead last after the first lap, hut I battled lip to 15th, which was third in class, after recording the second fastest lap of the d a y “Then on Sunday, I had a
cracking start, got away with the front runners, and despite it being difficult in terms of tyre choices, with it being wet, dry, wet, dry, I managed to fin ish fifth overall; and first in class, whoich was a fantastic result.” Thundersport GB is a Brand
new and totally independent UK-hased race series, which was only given final approval in December. The series has nine classes
■ including Aprilia Superteens, Powerbikes, Supermonos and Sidecars, and was set up by former BMCRC race director Dave Stewart, running at eight venues, including Brands Hatch and Bonington Park, with coverage on Motors TV and other selected satellite channels. The mm is to develop a con
veyor belt of riders for the British Superbike Champi onship - won by Bayliss in 1999, and Kiyonari in 2006 and 2007, as well as Neil Hodgson, who hails from Reedley, Burnley, in 2000. Stewart said; “BSB is often
quoted as the most respected domestic Superbike series in the -world, hut to keep it that way requires a constant sup ply of polished riders from other series. We already have
'th a t talent on tap, we just need to reinstate a credible platform for them to display
and develop their skills.” And Cutts-Bland has cer
tainly. displayed and devel oped his skills. The Sound of Thunder class
is open to a diverse range of machinery, and as the Thun dersport GB website says: “If it’s got one, two or three cylin ders and a four stroke motor, this is where it lives!” Any tyre slick or treaded
may be used, and there are no weight or horsepower limits. However, the costs can he
prohibitive, as Lee explained: “I’ve financed the whole thing with my partner Fiona Knight, and we’ve really got things together. • “I t would just he great to
attract some sponsorship to help move things on and help develop the bike.” Anyone interested
in.help
ing out Lee can contact him on 07976658939.
Glitheroe’s preparations hit by weather
THE weather played havoc with Clitheroe Rugby Club’s chances of action over the weekend,
^ ^ o th the first team’s ^A d ly against Burnley and seconds’ league game against Carnforth were postponed due to water logged pitches. .On Saturday, the first
team play their first league game of the season • at Tarleton; where they
hope to put all the work done over pre-season into practice, and the seconds are at home to Fleetwgod, kick-off 3 p.m. . On Sunday, however,
Clitheroe Buccaneers •Under 14/15s did manage to play. After a lot of pre-season
anticipation, the team faced their first fixture against new opponents • North Ribblesdale.
Unfortunately, after a
number of late cry-offs, the Clitheroe team dis- apppoihtingly only turned out with a 11 fit players, including a cou ple of over age players. The team now face the
dilema of not being able to fulfil'fixtures at both Under'15 and Under 16 level: unless they can muster some new recruits.- However, the match
kicked off -with Clitheroe's brave 11 boys against a younger, but well organ ised, North Ribblesdale 15.
-Even though they were
outnumbered, in open play the Clitheroe team were able to take advan tage of their superior weight and height advan tage on a very heavy pitch, and opened the scoring with a fine indi-
■vidual effort from man-of- the-match Sam Grooby, which was unconverted. The score see-sawed
between the teams, result ing in Grooby bagging his second try, together with a well-worked try from prop James Wilde, and a fine 50-yard effort from Joe Shorrock. Clitheroe found it
. heavy going after losing Will Spenceley-Jones,"
playing the second quar ter with only 10 men. At half-time. North
Ribblesdale lent them two • extra players who per formed bravely, but Clitheroe took their foot off the pedal, and the home side came more into the picture. It ended with the home
side running out 27-24 winners.

Harwo od crowned a f te r la te s t
w a sh o u t THE penultimate weekend of the Rib blesdale League sea son was washed out - confirming Great Harwood as champi ons for the first time since 1900! Any-local interest in
the title had long since evaporated, and none of our four clubs had a say this weekend in thd destiny of the championship. Read were due to
travel to Baxenden on Saturday in a game that could have had a big say in their LCB Knockout ambitions, but th a t match, like Sunday’s trip to O s w a l d t w i s t l e Immanuel, bit the dust. • Read lie 24 points
behind Bash in fourth, ahead of their final game a t home to Earby on Saturday. Whalley also have
eyes on an LCB place, with five points sepa rating them from Edenfield in fifth place, but their hopes were dashed by aban donments at home to Oswaldtwistle and at Earby - two games they would have fan cied taking maximum points from. , Whalley entertain Cherry Tree on Satur day, while rivals Rib blesdale Wanderers could do them a favour at Edenfield. Wanderers’ games
at Blackburn North ern and the derby a t hmne to Clitheroe we^re also rained off, with Clitheroe’s Sat urday game at home to Cherry Tree anoth er victim of the del uge. On ' Saturday,
Clitheroe bring the curtain down on the season at home to Set tle;
