Man crashed car of sleeping frieiM
A 24-YEAR-OLD Clitheroe man to ok a friend’s car and crashed it while his friend was sleeping.
> Blackburn magistrates heard
that Thomas Pickering parked the write-off in a back alley and returned the keys to where his friend had left them. But he had already woken,
discovered they were missing and had alerted police.
Pickering, of Shawbridge
Street, admitted taking a car without consent-, driving while disqualified and without insur an ce .. He was banned from - driving for 12 months; made subject to community supervi sion, ordered to do 80 hours unpaid work and pay £2,000 compensation to Simon Berry. - Emma Kehoe (prosecuting) said the two friends were at
, Pickering’s home and had a few drinks. Mr Berry fell asleep and Pickering took the opportunity to take his car for a drive. ■ “He crashed the car into a
waU causing extensive damage.” Mrs Kehoe said Mr Berry’s
father had attended court to explain that the car had been
. written off and his son would not be able to claim o f f his insurance.:

to 14, flew to Cape Town, South Africa, on a two-week, multi-sports tour, which includ ed sightseeing and a series of matches against schools in the surrounding townships and schools. Before playing any matches
the pupils enjoyed a cable car ride 1,086 metres up Table Mountain and were rewarded with spectacular views across the Atlantic Ocean.' • The first matches were
played in Langa township, where the teams had a warm welcome and an interesting tour of the settlement. • The under-12s and 13s girls’
netball teams were matched against girls from the town ship’s Zimsasi school. They did
not win but enjoyed the experi ence, especially as the whole school surrounded the netball court to watch and cheer the game. The boys played a thrilling
rugby match against Zimsasi pupils, leading until the end of the first half. In the SMbnd half the host team levelled the score and the game ended at 14-14. The under-12s, and 13s girls!
hockey teams played an excel lent 11-a-side match-against the Zimsasi under-14s team,'
'winning 5-0. During the trip, the -visitors
also had a memorable visit to the museum and former prison on Robben Island and saw the cell where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 19 years. The teams travelled to Som- •
erset West and stayed with host families from Sweet Valley School. After sightseeing, there were 'more sports matches at Cape Town University.
The pupils explored the Cape
Peninsula,, where they enjoyed a trip to Boulders Beach, Simonstown, to see the penguin colonies and whales at False Bay. At the end of the fortnight,
the pupils went on a safari tour around the Mabula Game Reserve and were lucky enough to see lions, buffalo, giraffes, and elephants in spectacular scenery, from, their open top Land Rovers. ■ -“All the boys and girls bene fited greatly from their tour of South Africa,” said Mr Charles Watson at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall. “The host families could not have been more hos pitable and we are sure the. pupils would love to visit this amazing country again in years to'pome.” Our picture shows the boys
and girls from St Mary’s Hall, Stonyhurst, during their-visit to South Africa, (s)
atre chief executive, he had no hesitation in asking her to provide the venue and help pull the production team together. Harriet has acted opposite Roger in Ciitheroe productions and welcomed the
idea of staging the ambitious musical. “ From a personal point of view, it
gives me enormous satisfaction to help Roger organise this project,” said Harri et. “And to be involved in bringing 'together so many talented friends that I
have met over the past 24 years that T have been involved in local theatre, start ing as a little girl in pantomimes at Calderstones, then societies in Burnley, Clithefoe, Accrington and Blackburn.” . “Fiddler on the Roof” runs from Sep

Nature over the
border THE weather was fine and dry for Clitheroe Naturalists' Society trip over the border into Bronte Country. Starting from Haworth
the group followed in the footsteps of the famous sisters over heather clad moors to Penistone Hill and along good tracks to •Bronte waterfalls, a pic turesque place to enjoy lunch and reflect on the stories that these sur roundings could tell. Crossing the
little.foot-
bridge, the route climbed steeply to emerge at Cold Knoll with extensive views looking East over the Worth Valley, before entering the village of Stanbury and over the dam o f Lower Laithe ' Reservoir and back to Haworth via Penistone Hill. ■ Time was allowed for
members to explore the historic village before rejoining the coach for home. A pair of buzzards were
observed and many swal lows lined the telegraph wires preparing for th e . long journey south. • 'Three
different
heathers and 45 plants were noted plus bog rush, bilberry and harebells. Chairman F. Pickles
thanked leaders C. Pick les and J. Trotter. Members are reminded
