‘High life’ couple ordered to repay
21 21 2 1 2 1
A COUPLE said by a judge to have “enjoyed the high life” as a result of fraud from a Clitheroe' company have been ordered to repay thou sands of pounds or face a fur ther two years in jail. Judge Philip Sycamore ordered
that Carolyn Walsh and her ex- husband David Walsh should hand over £127,000 under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002. David Walsh previously
admitted a £680,000 fraud car ried out on Concept Building Solutions. Having convinced the company he was a qualified accountant, he went on to steal funds from them. S it ting a t Pres ton Crown
Court, the Judge ruled th a t David Walsh had benefited by £618,000 and Carolyn Walsh by £135,000 through offences they had previously admitted. But
the court heard that the amount of cash available for confiscation totalled £127,000. Carolyn .Walsh (43) of Princes
Reach, Ashton, Preston, was jailed for 15 months in March for money laundering and pervert- ■ ing the course of justice. ■ David Walsh (39) was given
six years for fraud in 2007 and later had 12 months added to the sentence for perjury and pervert ing the course of justice. The court had heard that Car
olyn Walsh laundered thousands of pounds through her bank
. account before it was spent on jewellery and other expensive goods, as well as stays in hotels like Claridges, where a £6,000 bill was run up. In addition, she and David
Walsh sold around £80,000 worth of vehicles, including a Mercedes, Ferrari and BMWs, despite a co u rt order. David
Walsh was well known, having hosted a “Dragon's Deh”-type‘ initiative for would-be entrepre neurs. '. , .
• On Monday, financial inves ....... .•
tigator DC Rod Steele from the Serious and Organised Crime Unit Financial Investigation Unit said: “This case sends out a clear message to others th a t , despite Walsh’s guilty pleas and custodial sentence, Lancashire Constabulary will n o t allow criminals to profit from their crime and today we have ensured
■ that when he leaves prison he will return to nothing.” DC Steele added th a t Walsh
lived a life well beyond his means and abused the t ru s t of his employers. The th e f ts began almost immediately a f te r he s ta r te d working a t Concept Building Solutions and in two years he nearly put the company out of business.
Panoramic impression of town
A PANORAMIC impression of ‘Aspects of Clitheroe” is now
on view at Clitheroe Library. This piece of art - measuring 8 feet X 3 feet - was created at a community arts project organ ised by New Form Arts for the Clitheroe Festival in May. I t is made up from 150 postcard size panels th a t were drawn and coloured by visitors to the fes- ' tival and represents a wide range of age groups and abili ties. I t features many of the familiar
landmarks of
Clitheroe. The panorama will be on dis
play a t the library for a month after which it will be available to any local group or organisa tion. Anyone interested in dis playing it - or giving i t a per manent home - should contact Norman Kelly (te l: 01200 441320). New Form Arts is a group of artists, makers and writers based in the Ribble Val ley. The group has taken part in a number of community art projects and local exhibitions. A NEW future beckons for the site of a former Sabden firm relo cated last year. The Whalley Road site, where Contrast Upholstery was based,
• up until last year, has been given . a new lease of life after being . refurbished and is now on the market to let. The site has been split into
three separate areas comprising Falcon House with offices and a workshop, a separate industrial
unit and yard space. Contrast Upholstery, owned by the Pre ston-based Tetrad, took over the Cobden Mill premises in 1996 but after 11 years there it was decided to centralise operations due to the age and location of the site. One of the main reasons given was th e fa c t th a t the expanding company did not feel it would be viable to have 40ft. lorries travelling through the -vil lage everyday.
