Tiny artists delight * visitors to exhibition
by Duncan Smith
BRUSH strokes by tiny hands delighted visitors to Whalley Pre-School’s second annual a rt exliibition.
■ Under the expert guidance of Joyce Reeves, all the children worked extremely hard to prepare a piece of work on canvas special ly for the exhibition, which again proved a popular event. ■ The children’s masterpieces
were on display in the gallery at local fine art and gift shop Saffire,

targeted during a 13-day blitz in the rural borough. Officers from Ciitheroe Police caught 251 motorists failing to wear a seat- belt while 43 were issued with a £60 fixed fine and given three penalty points for using a mobile phone when driving. The operation followed a

month-long campaign run in October last year, which saw 34 fixed penalty notices handed out to drivers using a mobile phone while driving and 223 motorists were caught behind the wheel without a seatbelt on. Sgt John Lindsay, of Ciitheroe
Police, has been in charge of the crackdown and says he feels dis appointed with the results.
“There has been a rise ,in
motorists flouting legislation in the past 12 months. All the Com munity Beat Manager and Police Community Support Officers worked together during the .13 days in July and targeted roads in Ciitheroe, Whalley, Read, Simon- stone, Langho, Wilpshire and Longridge. “The operation followed com
plaints raised at monthly Police and Community Together (PACT) meetings and we had some very interesting excuses. “Most of the areas we targeted
were residential urban areas where drivers were passing junc tions, houses, businesses and schools potentially putting peo ple at risk. “In one incident, a woman was
stopped after being spotted using her mobile phone while driving. When she saw the officers approaching her vehicle, she threw the phone in the footwell and denied ever using it.
Disease vaccine
now available FARMERS in Lancashire can finally vaccinate their livestock against Bluetongue disease from today. The Bluetonge Protection Zone
has been extended to include the whole of Lancashire from today, while vaccine manufacturer Merial has released more than two million additional doses of Bluetongue
serotype 8. Now the National Farmers Union "
(NFU) is urging livestock farmers to vaccinate their animals as soon as possible, warning that apathy is not
an option., France currently has in the region
of 2,200 new positive Bluetongue C 3 S 6 S* '
Approximately 900 of these hap
pened in the past week and another ■ 1,000 in the week before. NFU Lancashire county chairman,
Gisburn farmer David Graveston, said: “You only have to look at what’s happening on the Continent to realise that Bluetongue disease is
still prevailing. “Although we’ve not had any new
f
kcases of Bluetongue in Britain ^recently, the predictions from the experts are that it could raise its ugly head at any time. Farmers who are ^ thinking of saving a bit of cash or feel it’s unnecessary to vaccinate because we haven’t had any recent outbreaks should think again.” _^

ing a man was caught not wear ing a seatbelt and when ques tioned his excuse was he was rushing to a doctor’s appoint ment when he actually didn’t have one.” He added: “This operation was
about road safety, and motorists continue to be under the watchful - eye of police officers. “Using a mobile phone while
driving has been an offence since 2003 and is clearly unacceptable - not only are they putting their own lives at risk, but they are risking the lives of other road users too.” He went on to say; “ I hope
what we have done last month will make people think twice before breaking the law in future and set out a clear signal to them that we mil not tolerate this type of behaviour and we will take firm action against anyone found to he doing so.”
