CHANGES to the school bus system which could cost some Ribble Valley parents hun dreds of pounds per year are actually overdue, according to Lancashire County Coun cil.

Last.week we reported tha t

Ribble.Valley Citizens’ Advice Burea is inviting parents affect ed by the changes to get in touch so th a t it can co-ordinate the campaign. .

■ I t was started by local parent

Angela Cunliffe after she learned that her daughter’s decision to attend Clitheroe Royal Gram mar School from September, 2008, would cost the family around £450 per year in trans port costs as a result of changes

in the free transport policy of, Lancashire County Council..

Although existing CRGS pupils from Whalley will continue to

■have free bus travel until age 16,. students starting at secondary ' school this September will only qualify for free travel if attend ing the nearest available school.

. For-pupils in Whalley, the nearest option is Ribblesdale High School, which although.

. still in Clitheroe, is slightly near er than the grammar school.;.: •. •That means Angela and other

parents in a similar position are facing annual travel-to-school costs running into hundreds of pounds per child. ■ “I rang my Area Education ■ Office to ask if my child could

has been caused. PC Matthew Caton, of Clitheroe Police, is inves-

This cuppa is an award-winner!

by Duncan Smith

IF you want a really, really, really good cup of coffee, then look no further than Clitheroe. Judges in the Great Taste Awards 2008 have just

awarded their highest three gold star accolade to the FrenchRoast Coffee at the Exchange Coffee Com pany, in Wellgate, meaning they consider it “fault

less”.. In fact, of the dozen gold star awards made in

Lancashire, six have gone to Clitheroe products - two to the Exchange Coffee Company and four to multi-award winning Farmhouse Fare! In an industry where award schemes abound, the

Great Taste Awards are widely recognised as “the real thing”, acknowledging the very finest products and producers.

- Just 72 of the 4,753 products entered into the

scheme this year, were awarded the coveted three gold stars - a mark that the expert judges considered

them faultless. ' . '

The Espresso Creama coffee was one of 1,124 awarded a one-star gold grading for general excel

lence in taste, texture and flavour. • . Stocking more than 30 varieties of coffee and

more than 60 loose teas at its aromatic Wellgate premises, the company was started by local man Mark Smith from his market stall 25 years ago and is a real success story. ■ It has shops in Blackburn and Skipton as well as Clitheroe, and coffee bars in Blackburn and Tod-

side. Commenting on the award, general manager

Richard Isherwood said: “I t ’s fantastic - we’re real ly chuffed! Especially because the French Roast is the ‘house blend’, the coffee we use every day for the espresso and cappuccino that we serve on the prem

ises. ■'; • ' “We believe in what we do and we know our coffee

is great...,but is is still nice to get external recogni

tion.” Meanwhile four awards went to products from

Clitheroe-based Farmhouse Fare, each winning a single gold star. They were Luxury Bread and But ter Pudding (500g), Luxury Syrup Sponge Pudding (500g), Luxury Sticky Chocolate Sauce (250g) and Luxury Sticky Toffee Sauce (250g). The major award-winners in the Great Taste

Awards 2008, including the Supreme Champion, will be announced at Royal Garden Hotel in Kens ington, London, on September 8th. • The Exchange Coffee Company is among 36

local food and drink producers showcased in the Ribble Valley Food Trail, an initiative by Ribble Valley Borough Council to promote the area and it many premier producers. Both men also deny a joint

charge of indecent assault - the prosecution allege they took part in a “threesome” with one • of the girls.

. - The trial is expected to last up

to three weeks. - ■ Mr Jeremy Lasker (prosecut

ing) told the jury two of the girls were regular victims of sexual activity in many forms. . The first girl, who is now an .

adult, was abused over an eight- year period and lost her virgini ty to Alan Hughes, who involved her “in all manner of sexual behaviour”, alleged Mr Lasker. She was also th e victim of sex--

ual-abuse at the hands of the other defendant, he said.

' When the girl had angered Alan Hughes, he used violence and punched and kicked her, claimed the prosecution.. . . ^ . . She was raped when'she.was a!/

teenager, said Mr Lasker. The second girl was also

teenage when she was allegedly abused by Alan Hughes after being plied with drink. Mr Lasker said the third girl was sexually abused when the

opportunity arose. Alan Hughes had had sex with

her by the time she was 14. The jury was'told that some

of the offences were committed at Earby and in Wales. Mr Lasker told the jury that . what happened amounted to the

“ most dreadful behaviour”. Alan Hughes had allegedly

told the first girl he “could get done” and be “put away”. Matters came to light when a

complaint was made and when interviewed by police both men denied the offences..
