GRINDLETON

Red rose win On Sunday Grindle- ton Cricket team took part in a Roses battle against York shire rivals Hebden

. Bridge. Grindleton skipper Crossland, " .who appears to have

' . mastered the art of ■ the toss, won yet ■ again and elected to bat first.

Wilkinson and Jack-

son are becoming a formidable opening

• pair for the home- : side. : ■ ■ Both batsmen got off • to a confident start with neither being particularly trou bled by the bowlers.

'Some aggressive stroke play from Wilkinson.brought up another half cen tury, while Jackson at the other end continued to play with a straight bat. The ■ partnership had reached- 98 when Wilkinson (56) was caught off the bowling of Anderson, who struck again four

‘ balls later to remove -Whittaker.

Middlebrough joined Jackson at the crease, and the pair set about building a partnership for, the home-side.

: A

boundary, through the covers brought up Jackson’s 50, as the batsmen contin ued to punish the bowlers. .

An unusually quick single brought up Middlebrough’s 50.

Jackson looked set to join the short list of Grindleton centuri ons but the overs ran out as the home- side finished on 226 for 3, with Jackson 93 not out. ■

The Grindleton open- ing bowlers soon made their presence felt, with the bats men struggling against the spin of Nuttall and the hos tile pace of Cherry. A mix-up between the batsmen, and some handy glove work from Raw, saw Wisbyrunout.

Two wickets from Cherry in as many overs, and one from Nuttall wiped out the top order, leav ing the visitors struggling on 29 for 4. Some brief resist ance from Allison (10) and Allenby (10) stalled the G r i n d 1 e t o n onslaught, but skip per Crossland was not to be denied; with 18 overs gone he brought Taylor into the attack. Crossland held on to two difficult slip catches.

The innings was final-

' ly brought to a close when Whittaker took a fine one- handed catch. Heb den Bridge were all out for 75. .
