•Farmers take on top chefs
by Duncan Smith
A TEAM of Young F arm ers from th e Ribble Valley took on profes sional chefs in a new BBC cookery show screened th is week. Adam Thornber, of Bolton-by-Bow-
land YFC, Lizzie Goar, of Samlesbury YFC, and James Hoperaft, of Clitheroe YFC, travelled to London early last month to film the 45-minute-BBCl show hosted by renowned food critic Loyd Grossman and “Strictly Come Dancing’s” Anton Du Beke. . . - The format of “Step Up To The Plate” sees a team of “home cooks” go head-to-head against celebrated chefs, whose professional reputations are on the line. Each team must produce and serve a three-course meal, to be judged in a “blind tasting” by Loyd Grossman. Competing for a cash prize, the
Young Farmers devised a delicious menu showcasing a range of locally-
sourced ingredients. Their starter was smoked haddock with shrimps and lemon butter sauce served on a pikelet., Their main course was corn-fed
chicken stuffed with sausage meat, served with black pudding mashed potato and a pea and ham broth, with a dessert of rhubarb fool to finish off. After a tense judging session, the
relieved chefs - Theo Ran d all and James Tanner - just came out on top, with Loyd Grossman saying it had been a tough call. “■W
e heard about the new programine
through Cowman’s Sausage Shop (in Clitheroe), who also supplied some of the ingredients, then we contacted the BBC and took i t from there,” said Adam Thornber. “Although we didn’t win, i t was a
great experience and we really enjoyed going down to London and getting an insight into how a TV programme is
made. “Loyd Grossman also said he was
very impressed with our meal and it was a hard one to judge, so we were
happy with that.” The programme was screened on
Tuesday a t 2-15 p.m. Our picture shows Young Farmers
