Late goal denies Hurst Green Narrow derby win

HURST Green conceded a goal in the last minute as this

-enthralling pre-season match against West Lancashire League opposition ended all-square. Green travelled, to Whinney*

Hill with a slightly different; squad from the earlier 2-0 defeat, against Poulton, with'Warren Baker, returning for, his second spell at the club.

, Hurst Green were slow to

start, but that.was to be expect ed with several new faces. . The home side didn’t really produce anything of note, apart from a few shots outside the box which flew well over the bar, but just as Hurst Green were finding ; their feet, they conceded a,

bizarre goal. Keeper Steve Young bizarrely

made a meal of a tame 40-yard effort, and the Whinney Hill midfielder was on hand to chip over the beleagured stopper. Green recovered well and

started to play some neat inter changes with Malley, Tipton, Paul Chippendale and Danny Walker working well together. T h i s dangerous combination,

created the first goal, as Chip pendale lashed.in a shot just inside the box. : ' , .............. ' Minutes later Chippendale,

grabbed his second as he cooly side-footed-home following good work from Tipton. . : However,; Whinney : Hill

-equalised after another howler , from Young.

Green made changes at half

time and looked comfortable against the home side. Walker. ■ and Chippendale looking partic ularly dangerous up front. . . Green had a shot cleared off

the line midway through the half, and looked to have won the game as Walker volleyed home a superb effort with minutes to .; spare, but in injury. time, the home side equalised.

.- Green now face Clitheroe- RBL on Saturday at home, with several other players expected to . be u-sed.

■WHALLEY’S recent' upturn in fortunes contin ued as Neil Cordingley took 7-36 to beat Barnoldswick and put the Station Road side back in Lancashire Knockout con tention. Cordingley’s stunning

Neil in seventh heaven!

haul came off jus t 14 overs, as Richard Palmer’s men earned a crushing 84- run victory to move with in six points of fifth-place - Barnoldswick. •Substitute professional

Hasnaim Abbas proved ' the mainstay of the 'Whal ley innings, making 80 of the locals’ 195-9, off just 69 balls, with four fours and seven sixes. He and opener Cording

ley, who made 34, shared 73 for the second wicket, while Gregory Jones later made 29 before being run out. Cordingley then effec

tively won thfe game, tak ing the first seven wickets in Barnoldswick’s reply, reducing the home side to 29-7. Captain Michael Scoth-

ern dug in for his team, making 48 off 106 balls before being last man out a tm . Whalley are at home to

Blackburn Northern on Saturday. Ribblesdale Wanderers,

ahead of their cup heart break, enjoyed league suc cess a t home to Cherry Tree, with Joe Scuderi rolling back the years with a superb 118 not out. The Italian internation

al received useful support ^ from Dave Howard in a total of 218-6. . Despite another produc

tive stay at the crease from professional Saleem Mughal (84), Tree man aged only 177-9, as Marcus Pratt took 6-56.

. Wanderers entertain Baxenden on Saturday - Clitheroe’s nemesis at the weekend. Neil Bolton’s; side'

clocked up 150-6 from their overs, but fell to a: five-wicket defeat. . Professional Paul Turn

er, having reached the magical 1,000-run mark

. overall this season, is clos ing on four figures in league games, and hit 62 to take his tally to 885. . :. The opener again held

• the innings together, with Peter Dibb (17), Jack Dewhurst (26) and Bolton, (26) also making good con tribution's, blit scoring

• quickly enough a t Back Lane proved a prqblem, as the home side knocked off the winning runs in the

39thover. Ian Austin made 54, to ■

add to 22 from fellow open er David Parkinson, 19 from Callum Waddington and unbeaten knocks of 28 from David Cronshaw and 13 from Simon Payne. Andrew Pearce (2-27),

Farouk Hussain (2-26) and Dan Glover (1-26) took the wickets. • Clitheroe are at Eden

field on Saturday.; Read were undone by a

scintillating ton from- Padiham’s Umar Saddique at the Arbories. Saddique smashed an

unbeaten 104, to add to 72 from professional Kashif Siddique, in a 94-run vic tory. Saddique’s knock came

off 102 balls and included 12 fours and six sixes - in an entertaining Padiham innings that contained a total of 20 boundaries and 16 maximum hits! Read skipper Jon Har

vey won the toss and elect ed to field, but he was made to regret that deci- . sion almost from the off, as Siddique launched his first two balls onto the football pitch! Siddique and Abdul

Saddique put on 60 for the first wicket, with the youngster contributing 12 before he was bowled by Harvey.

. - ’ Abdul’s older brother

Umar shared 74 with the pro before Siddique hand ed Kurt Smithson a return catch for 72, which includ ed eight six hits. Umar anchored the

innings, and found support from Lee Anderson (17) and Nesir Mehmood (20), as the innings closed on a daunting 263-6, with Smithson finishing with 3- 70 off 14 overs, and War-' ren Eastham with 2-61 off 15.

Read’s reply got off to a

disastrous start, and never recovered. The first five xvickets fell

for just 48 runs, with open er Harvey struggling to '

' find any help at the other end, and when he was

- finally out, for a 76-ball 67,' he was the eighth man out at 95.

. ; Elliot Lowes and Pete Haworth put’on 60 for the

? last wicket to add some ■ respectability to the score, batting sensibly, with the young bowling prodigy making 45, including eight

• fours, and Haworth finish ing unbeaten on 21, as Read closed on 169.

.

. On Saturday, Read are at home to Barnoldswick.
