BLUES REVIEW OF THE YEAR

-PAGE 45

Blues set to ring changes

By Adrian Capstick

IT’S back to school for the Blues at Bridlington Town on Saturday. Having picked up just

one point from the last three fixtures, Clitheroe face the first of three suc cessive away games \vith a trek to the east coast in search of three much-need ed points from the second bottom side. Bridlington also picked

up a point on Tuesday with a 0-0 draw against Harrogate Railway, which was their first in six games, but still sacked manager Ash Berry after the game. The Blues will make the

trip without one of their stars of the season to date. Joel Byrom has left to

join Blue Square Premier League outfit Northwich Victoria. And th a t will mean

changes to the side on Sat urday. Jason Jones returns to the squad from Darwen and Craig Sargeson is a step closer to full fitness, as the team looks to take a grip on the second half of the season. A coach for supporters

wishing to make the trip will leave Shawbridge at 10-15 a.m. Blackburn Rovers

Ladies face Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Women’s Cup a t Shaw bridge on Sunday, kick-off 1 p.m.

CntheroeFC................ 3 Rossendale Utd .......... 3 CLITHEROE almost started 2008 top of their class on New Year's Day only to be taught a cruel lesson by two late Rossendale United goals. Two goals by pocket

rocket striker Mickey Saunders set the Clitheroe side ablaze in the first half. His first came from a

Joel Byrom ball in to the six-yard box which he quickly took under control and fired a t keeper Lee Bracey, who stopped the initial effort but not the rebound. And his second came

courtesy of a well-weight ed through ball from Sam Heap which put him clean through on goal to clinical ly slot home. Despite a fairly inactive

first half Rossendale pulled a goal back in stop page time to creep back in to the game when Andrew Watson fired in a right- wing strike which a melee of players at the far post were unable to keep out. Clitheroe had two good

calls for a penalty in the first half and after the break, Saunders went close to his hat-trick. Heap missed two prime opportunities to get on the score board and Neil Zarac went close on two occasions thanks to the pin-point delivery of Byrom who gave a rousing final performance for the

Blues. Former Clitheroe striker

Ben Stanford was denied by Mann at the other end when put through on goal, followed by fellow forward Phil Eastwood forcing a save. Adam Kozlowski

attempted to chip Bracey from almost 60 yards as the action continued to flow and Clitheroe could have had the ball in the back of the net sooner for their third goal but for a classic piece of kidology by Rossendale centre back Kevin Brown. Following a 50-50 chal

lenge with Zarac the defender stayed down as he saw the ball break to Saun ders and what would have been a certain goal. Curi ously holding his head he forced a very late call by the referee for the physio which he then didn't need and David Dempsey was robbed of a goal-scoring opportunity. All was not lost, though,

as following a bad chal lenge on player-manager Neil Reynolds by James Heywood, Rossendale were reduced to 10 men and Clitheroe pulled fur ther ahead from the free kick. Byrom launched the

dead ball in to the six-yard box with pace and accura cy, just calling for Zarac to steer home the 84th minute effort with his head.

Clitheroe obviously

thought they'd done enough and the game was won but two very late goals robbed them of max imum points. Raddiffe Borough . . . .3 Clilheroe.................. . .1 POOR defending and an ineffective first half in front of goal made for a shocking Saturday after noon of football for Clitheroe at bottom-of- the-leagiie Radcliffe Bor ough. There was much more

effort seen from the Blues than Boxing Day's dismal display a t Rossendale United, jus t no cutting edge until the first minute of stoppage time. Clitheroe piayed down

hill wth the wind and rain at their backs for the first half, but were nowhere near the threat they need ed to be if they were to command the game. Joel Byrom had shots

from distance almost from the off to test Radcliffe keeper Phil Priestley, but too often the visitors were smothered in the attack and failed to get any close range efforts on target. Radcliffe took the lead

on 20 minutes when Craig Dawson headed home a left wing Gary Simpson cross after Clitheroe only half cleared the danger, having put the ball in his path. And the Blues could have been 2-0 behind and

J __L Neil Zarac

down to 10 men at half time had good fortune and Paul Horridge not been on their side as somehow the ball came off the keeper's post and back across goal for the Clitheroe man to thankfully leap on at the opposing post. Before Nigel Taylor

escaped with a yellow card for a heavy tackle in an almost last man situation. Fighting the proverbial

in the second half, Clitheroe were up against it from the start as their hosts made good use of the downward slope to see Dawson slot home a sec ond less than a minute after the restart. And it wasn't long

before Radcliffe'capped their first league win of the season with a third goal courtesy of Steve Howson. Substitutions were made

as David Dempsey, Sam Heap and Jack Overson were all introduced in the second half as the locals pushed towards goal. Shots didn't materialise

until the final few minutes, though, and it took Heap to break the back of the net in the first minute of stoppage time to add some respectability to the score line after a sublime pass

from midfield by Gary Stopforth. Rossendale United. . . .2 Clilheroe.......................0 BOXING Day brought lit tle festive cheer for Clitheroe at Rossendale United. After two weeks without

a game, the Blues looked out of practice and strug gled to shake off the excess of the festive season as these two teams met for an uninspiring derby show down. Neither team was on top

form and a goal in either half, both struck at dis tance, earned the home side the points. Rossendale's former

Burnley striker Phil East- wood found the back of the net on 19 minutes from just inside the area with the Stags’ first real move of the game. And former Clitheroe

frontman Ben Stanford struck home a second, hav ing come off the bench after the break. The Blues' best efforts

were also shots from dis tance. A Neil Reynolds shot was tipped round the post for a corner and a Ryan Fisher effort th a t went the same way.
