School’s praise for its

results

SPECIAL guest Sir Bill Taylor presented the prizes when Longridge High School held its senior prizegiving night. Also in attendance were

the Mayor and Consort of Ribble Valley, Coun. Doreen Taylor and her husband, Gordon, and the Mayor and Mayoress of Longridge, Coun. David Moon and his wife Sheila. Sir Bill inade many

kind remarks in his address before presenting prizes, trophies, cups and certificates to senior pupils and to former Year 11 students. Headteacher Mr Alan

Lewis said: “It was won derful to see so many of last year’s extremely suc cessful Year 11 return to school. “Collectively, they

achieved a stunning 71% five or more GCSE passes a t grades A* to C, with nearly a th ird of them gaining three or more GCSEs at grades A* or A. “The staff at Longridge

wish them every success and happiness in their future lives.” At the school’s junior

prizegiving, lower school pupils received awards for progress and effort in front of a packed hall. Dr K. Ackers, the school’s new chairman of Gover nors, presented the prizes. Pictured are some of the

winners and special guests at the senior prizegiving,

‘Challenge’ of new police cash deal

A CAU TIOU S welcome h a s b een given to L a n c a sh i re C o n s ta b u la ry ’s “Police an d C om m u n ity S a fe ty F u n d in g S e t t le ment” for the coming three years. Coun. Malcolm Doherty,

chairman of Lancashire Police Authority, commented on the funding package announced by the Home Secretary. He said: “While I welcome

the fact that we now have cer tainty over the funding alloca tions for the next three years and note th a t a t 2.7% i t is slightly higher than we pes simistically anticipated, the fact remains th a t it doesn’t

deal with the problem of his toric under-funding. “The demands on policing

are increasing all the time and, even with efficiency savings and other grants, we are still left with a challenging finan cial position. “We are also being asked to

double our cashable efficiency savings from 1.5% to 3%. In Lancashire we have achieved efficiency savings of £72M. over the past 10 years and obviously we will continue to seek further opportunities - but the options do diminish over time.” Before the announcement, Coun. Doherty and the chief

e.xecutive of the Police Authority, Miranda Car- ruthers-Watt, alongside Chief Constable Steve Finnigan, met local MPs in Westminster. They discussed topics which

are crucial to the future of policing, including funding, local a ccountability and ensuring the continued success of neighbourhood policing. In what was described after

wards as a constructive and useful day, they explained that although Lancashire Constab ulary is a consistently high performing force, it is increas ingly stretched in its capabili ties because of new threats and increased demand.

Adventures through Rotary sponsorship

ROTARIANS from the Rib- blesdale Club were delighted to hear from two women who were sponsored by Rotary on

a week’s visit to the Calvert Trust Centre, near Keswick. Christine Bailey, whom many people will have seen in

Clitheroe with her guide dog, spoke from braille notes that she had made. Members also heard from Patricia Hornby,

who acted as Christine’s carer and who was sponsored on the course by the Rotary Club of Clitheroe. They told of the activities

in which they took p a r t , including sailing, horse riding, orienteering, abseilling and archery; someone queried archery for a blind person and Christine replied th a t she stood alongside a table, was pointed in the right direction and ju s t let go! She hit the bullseye - a balloon. Both were grateful for the

opportunity and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The talk also brought back sad memories of when four Rib- blesdale Rotarians were killed in an air crash. As a memorial to them, the club bought a catamaran for the Calvert T ru s t Centre, which was named Phoenix. P ictu red is Ribblesdale
