There is also little doubt th at the way the Grafter looks will not be to everyone’s taste. The huge four-bar cattle grid grille is pushed upwards and outwards on a raised section of the bonnet that is framed by big, ver tically-stacked headlamp dusters. A thick bumper section below adds to the imposing effect that was, appar ently inspired by the VW Constella tion heavy truck range that is on sale
in South America. The Grafter’s 2.5- litre common-rail diesel engine uses variable geometry turbo-charging, exhaust gas recirculation, a particle filter and a catalytic converter to help maintain the lowest possible emissions levels. It is offered in four s ta te s of tune s ta r tin g with the entry-level 89 b.h.p. model, then extending up through 109 b.h.p. and 136 b.h.p. versions to the range-top ping 164 b.h.p. derivative. Torque is the van driver’s best friend aiid hone, of these units will be found wanting. Even the least powerful option pumps out 220Nm between 1,750 and 2,500 r.p.m., while the 164 b.h.p. big hitter has 350Nm on tap at 2,000 r.p.m. The Grafter is available in the massive range body options that has become the norm with large panel vans these days. There are three basic gross vehicle weights of 3.0,3.5 and 5.0 tonnes. Then you have three wheelbases, giving rise to four load lengths. Three roof heights are also offered and when you multiply that lot together there is the potential to specify a Grafter with a load volume that is almost anything between 7.5m3 and 17m3. Space and build quality in the
cabin must count among the Crafter’s most impressive features. Remote central locking is standard
as are electric windows and a driver’s airbag. Then you have got an active safety provision that runs to ABS, electronic brakeforce distribution and a highly advanced version of the ESP Electronic Stability Control system. Storage is fairly well catered for with door pockets, an overhead shelf and a glovebox that can be air- conditioned to keep drinks cool. The
' Crafter’s doors automatically lock once you hit 10 m.p.h. to prevent undesirables trying to gain access while ybii are stopped at the lights. Get out and about in the Grafter
and the driving experience should impress. The general quality feel is continued by the effective sound insulation in the cab and the smooth ride, while performance is strong across the engine range. The usual advice that operators who regularly run with significant payloads onboard should spend the extra to progress up the engine line-up holds true as the entry-level unit will strug gle if pushed too hard. The driving position is quite car
like with an upright steering wheel, while the seating is supportive and equipped with an armrest to prop a weary elbow on longer trips. There is plenty of scope for making your Grafter a real technological show case.
