A MEDIEVAL manu script kept at Stonyhurst since 1837 is the centre piece of a major new exhi bition at Leeds Armouries.

The beautifully illustrated

copy of the Chronicles of John Froissart, a lively and well-informed account of the Hundred Years War, is taking pride of place in a specially-

designed “treasury” during the exhibition which opens on Saturday. Visitors can explore the

Froissart illustrations in vivid detail, and follow through a

theme or story in the (Chron icles, using interactive touch screens. Six “virtual” manuscripts,

photographed a t very high resolution, and never seen together before, have been created especially for this exhibition. “The Chronicles of Frois

sa r t; from conflict to co operation” offers a unique view of the Hundred Years War between England and France and also demon strates modern day interna tional collaboration between the UK, France and Bel gium, the Royal Armouries Museum, the University of Sheffield and four major European libraries. conservators have worked together with p h o to g ra phers, designers and pro grammers to share the rich ness of these books with as broad a public as possible. Stonyhurst acquired the

Chronicles of Froissart in 1837 when benefactor James Arundell, 10th Baron War- dour, bequeathed his sub stantial library to the Col lege. The precious book had

been in his family for over 400 years, brought back from the Battle of Agincourt in

1415 by his ancestor Sir John

Arundell, a famous soldier in his day. Jan Graffius, Stonyhurst

Curator, said: “The Froissart Chronicles are exquisitely

illus trated and provide an im p o r ta n t contemporary view of the thoughts and views of some of the people who lived through the turbu lent war-torn years of the 14th century. “We are delighted to be

able to share their contents with a wider audience. “Our manuscript is

about contemporary w'itn Froissart himself, and its lav ish illumination and gold leaf decoration proves th a t it must have been a very valu able possession.” The exhibition also fea

tu re s medieval arms and weapons, including some rare pieces never publicly dis played before, and explains how to make a manuscript and how people wrote in the Middle Ages. I t will run for four months

and will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Entry is free and events

will include workshops on manuscript illumination, illustrated talks by curators and invited speakers and medieval music concerts.

Act of bravado makes an impression on his wallet ^

A DRUNKEN man who jumped on the roof and bonnet of a car was showing off to his friends, but mag istrates told Matthew William Tanti that his act of bravado was going to prove expensive. Taiiti (22), of Simonstone Road, Sab-

den, pleaded guilty to causing £782 worth of damage to a car belonging to Michael Walker. He was fined £100 and irdered to pay £782 compensation and £110 costs.

Miss Catherine Allan (prosecuting)

said that a neighbour of Mr Walker was in his living room a t 1-20 a.m. when he heard voices outside. He looked out to see Tanti climb onto the roof of a Mit subishi Gallant, run across it and jump onto the bonnet. “There were other people who were

watching what he was doing and laugh ing,” said Miss Allan. Tanti then turned his attention to the

neighbour’s car, but as he jumped onto it he slipped and fell into the road.

“He went out and saw the group head

ing across a field,” said Miss Allan. Footwear impressions and fingerprints implicated Tanti in the offence. Mr Simon Farnsworth (defending)

said Tanti and his friends were on their way back to a local beauty spot where they were camping out. “He thought he would impress the

ladies with his climbing skills,” said Mr Farnsworth. “With hindsight he realises it was a stupid thing to do.”
