NEARLY 300 people in Read and Simonstone pulled on their running shoes to raise ■vital funds
for charities. The Run For Life is a 2.7 mile
run starting off at the Stork Hotel in Whalley Road, Read, up ■Whinris Lane and down Trapp Lane through Simonstone and back on to Whalley Road to Read again. It raises money for Macmillan Cancer Support, Rainbow Trust
Children’s Charity and the Lan cashire and South Cumbria Kid ney Patient’s Association; This year saw 279 runners, and organisers hope to match last
■ year’s sponsorship of £3,000 for the good causes. One of the founders of the run,
Mr Warren Eastham, who is also a committee member and player for Read Cricket Club, said:.“We wanted to put Read and Simon stone together as a community.
- and for everyone to enjoy the event and enjoy it with their fam
ilies. A lot of people turned out and there were also quite a few spectators. “No matter how much money
is raised it is a really worthwhile event. Most people have been touched by cancer in some way so this is a great event to raise money for these charities and get everyone together in a fun way.” (T210908/2)

'Ecstasy downgrade threat slammed by Valley MP
ECSTASY should remain a Class A drug, according to Ribble ’Val7 ley MP Nigel Evans. He is adamant that the illegal
drug should not be reclassified so that possession of it, or dealing in it. might carry less severe penal ties.
Speaking as a former chairman
of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Drug Misuse, Mr Evans called on the Government not to reclassEy ecstasy as a Class Bdrug. He was reacting to reports that
the Advisory Council on the Mis use of Drugs (ACMD) will review its classification and is
likely to'recommend that the drug be do'wngraded at a special evidence session tomorrow. Mr Evans said: “The Govern
ment made a huge mistake when they downgraded cannabis and, belatedly, they have come to realise this by ignoring the recom mendations of the ACMD -they must do exactly the ^me in this instance. “Ninety-seven people died
after taking ecstasy in 2007 and that number is rising every year.
, In fact, deaths from all drugs rose by 2.7% last year. “Downgrading ecstasy sends, out all the wrong messages. It is
not the attitude that we should be promoting to youngsters. “Frankly it is hardly a surprise
that the ACMD are considering this change given that their incoming president. Professor Nutt, was on record
in.the Lancet last year saying that alcohol and tobacco were more dangerous that ecstasy and was minded even two years ago that ecstasy should be a Class B drug. ■ ' ’ “It is not a recommendation
that the Home Secretary should. take up.“It should be rejected and ecstasy should remain a Class A drug.”
