A CANCER survivor and kid ney transplant patient, who battled'both conditions even though the odds were stacked against-her, is to take part in the Great.North Run this

weekend. A former piipil of .Ribblesdale

High School Technology College, Clitheroe, Sadie Whalley (nee Ellis) (38), will pound the streets of Tyneside on Sunday to.boost funds for a deserving charity. The inspirational mother-of-

two, pictured, who underwent a kidney transplant at the age of 23, is looking forward to taking part in the half-marathon in aid of the Leukaemia Research Fund. ■ Sadie was born and brought up

in Clitheroe and attended Edisford Primary School. On leaving high school, she went

to work at Ultraframe, until she married in 1990. A year later she and her husband

moved to Warwickshire, and not long afterwards were hit by the devastating news that Sadie’s kid neys had failed. She was on dialysis for two years

when, in 1993, her father donated one of his kidneys and she was able to have a successful kidney trans plant.

Cancer battler Sadie’s big charity effort

Despite facing such adversity, Sadie- made the most of life,

. enjoyed going travelling and years later celebrated the birth of their ■ two sons, who are now. aged six and 10. ■ . However, in November 2005 and

in a terrible twist of fate, she was diagnosed -with acute lymphoblas- , tic leukaemia - a cancer of blood

• forming cells in the bone marrow. It took two years of chemother

apy and radiotherapy at the Uni-' versity Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire to fight her cancer and she is finally free of all medica tion. To honour her strength and

courage throughout the illness, she is now gearing herself up to run the race this weekend to help fund research to eradicate all types of leukaemia. She said: “The past few years

have been difficult and I very near ly didn’t make it.

. “Because of my chemotherapy

treatment, two years ago I was walking with the aid of a stick. “But I am back on my two 'feet,

living each and every day to the full and want the support of gener ous Kibble Valley folk to help me raise as much money as possible for the Leukaemia Research Fund.” . Anyone wishing to pledge sup

port is urged to v is it website www.justgivmg.com/sadiewhalley or call her on 01788 833821. (s)
