Rare chance to hear great choir

GOSPEL music devotees should head over Pen dle Hill to Colne later this month to see the world famous London Community Gospel Choir in action. For one night only, the energetic choir, pic

tured, will perform at Colne Municipal Hall (The Muni) at 7-30 p.m. on Friday, October' 17th.

' In 1982 a dream and a vision came alive when the Rev.'Bazil Meade, with the help of others, made a mark in history by pioneering the first concert gospel choir in Britain - the London Community Gospel Choir (LCGC). From these humble beginnings its reputation

has grown and in 2006 they recorded the Offi cial World Cup Song together with the rock band Embrace for the England team, in Ger- many! . Other highlights include recording the sound track for the Disney classic “The Lion King”.

. Trying to fit LCGC into a neat slot is virtual ly impossible. : They are adaptable, flexible and create dynamic melodies with rich harmonies whether they are performing as an octet or a 30-strong choir. LCGC is known for its funky gospel flair, swing-beat, R'n'B, traditional and soulful arrangements, with invigorating choreography and vocal gymnastics. For tickets call the box office on 01282

661234. TV date for local family

A LOCAL family known to many gener ations at Stonyhurst College are starring in the ITV gameshow “All Star Family Fortunes” on Satimiay at 8-30 p.m. Sue and Richard Greenwood both

taught at the school and their son. Will, attended St Mary’s Hall. Will, a member of the winning Eng

land Rugby Union World Cup squad in 2003, was awarded the MBE for his serv ices to rugby union. He was also England vice-captain in

2004 for the Six Nations championship. Sue was a mathematics teacher at

Stonyhurst for 27 years and Richard coached rugby at Stonyhurst College, as

well as being captain of the England rugby team in the 1960s. They are joined by family members

Emma and Caroline, to compete against the James family, including Duncan, James from the band “Blue”. The programme was recorded some

time ago and the Greenwood family won thousands of pounds for their chosen charity The Rainbow Children’s Chari-. ty, which proiddes support for children with life threatening illnesses. “I think that many of our answers

were too intellectual for the progranme. “Nevertheless, we still won!” said a

delighted Sue.

LEGENDARY American guitarist Jerry Donahue spends six months of each year in the heady atmosphere of Hollywood, California - but for the rest of the year his UK base is Clitheroe. The string-bending master of the

electric guitar has fallen in love with the Ribble Valley and records fre quently at Clitheroe’s Acoustic Wood studios, owned by Clitheroe musician and agent Peter Barton. Regarded as the “guitarists’ gui

tarist”, Donahue has either record ed or performed over the past 30 years with such a r tis ts as Joan Armatrading, Gerry Rafferty,- Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant, Chris Rea and Sandy Denny. Now local people can hear him

play when he appears live a t Oswaldtwistle Civic Centre on Sun day, October 12th. He is part of the line-up for “The

Gathering of Legends of Folk Rock” concert, a folk-rock supergroup fea turing artists who have played with legendary folk-rock bands including , Jethro Tull, Steeleye Span, Lindis- farne and Fairport Convention. Wearing another hat, Jerry also

produced the latest album by '60s group The Animals, still fronted by Clitheroe bassist/vocalist Pete Bar ton. .

, And keeping it in the family, Jerry

has also begun work on the debut album of singer-songwriter Amy Barton - Peter’s daughter - who is a special guest for the “Legends of Folk Rock” UK tour. For details of the Oswaldtwistle show, phone 01254 380293..or for
