Creating is great fun
SCULPTOR Antony Gormley has inspired a creative project taking shape at Sabden primary school. Year 1 and two children have been up to
their elbows in clay, under the guidance of local artist Lizi Botham, as they attempt their own local version of his world-famous artwork, “Field for the British Isles”. The 26 children, including Max Turner
(six) and Grace Lodge (six), have learned about sculpture during a series of class room workshops, culminating in each of them creating their own foot-high figure in red terracotta during the latest one-and-a- half hour session. Mr Gormley created 40,000 figures for
“Asian Field” with a community in St Helens in 1994. Other “fields” include one of almost 200,000 small clay statues made by 350 villagers in south China in 2003. Former children’s TV presenter Lizi, of Wesley Street, Sabden, explained that she

asked them to incorporate a personal touch into their creation that said some thing about them. The figures will take about a week to
dry enough to be fired at her new work shop in Simonstone and she hopes they will be installed in the school playground by the summer.
Celebrating 40 by helping others
WHEN Clitheroe Round Table member Andrew Tomlison turned 40 he wanted someone else to feel the benefit. That is why he asked for donations to
the East Lancashire Hospice instead of presents, raising a magnificent £385 for the Blackburn-based charity. Well over 100 friends and family attend
ed a grand birthday bash for Andrew, held at Clitheroe Cricket Club, where they enjoyed a disco and hot supper. Andrew and his wife, Kerry, are very proactive fund-raisers and members of the
Clitheroe Round Table and Ladies Circle respectively. They chose the hospice as they have experiences of the services it provides and wanted to raise awareness within the Ribble Valley - one of the East Lancashire communities it serves. Anyone who would like to help with
fund-raising for the hospice can call its fund-raising team on 01254 660900. Also, anyone interested in joining
Clitheroe Round Table or Ladies Circle can contact Kerry Tomlinson on 07738 820643.
