A CLITHEROE man who was rescued by the North West Air Ambulance complet ed a 43-mile bike ride to raise funds for the

vital service. Only last year, David Askew was on his bike

when lie was involved in a head-on collision with a car. The NWAA was able to reach him in just

four minutes and airlift him to the Royal Pre ston Hospital. lie suffered extensive injuries and the car that hit him was written off. David wanted to give something back by taking part

in the HealthSure - North West Air Ambu lance Cycle Challenge, which he completed recently along with more than 120 others from throughout the North West. The challenge gave a choice of a 43-mile ride

around scenic Cheshire, beginning and ending at Tatton Park, Knutsford, and a five-mile family route through leafy Tatton Park. The event raised more than £1,000, which

will fund a vital four days of fuel for the NWAA’s helicopter Katie. Our picture shows Mr Askew, (s)

THE anniversary show and sale of rearing calves at Gisburn Auction Mart saw all previous market record calf prices smashed, with a top price of £428 being achieved. The top bid of the day

was for the champion, an outstanding eight-week old Belgian Blue bull calf from dairy farmer Jim Faud, of Great Harwood. I t sold to to Mr Ian

Harrison, of Cumbrian Quality Calves, Penrith. Regular vendor Geoff

Blezard, of Ribchester, was in the money with his superb pen of Belgian Blue buils, sired by the Irish bull Chesnut Umpire. They sold for between

£308 and £232 to John and Robert Sturdy, of Malton, North Yorkshire. B. and B.M. Bayes, of Driffield, East Yorkshire,

A MATCH between Clitheroe Juniors and Crusasders Juniors from Blackburn brought the season to a close for Clitheroe Chess Club. Playing in their first

competitive match for Clitheroe, James Buckley, Sam Booth and Phillip Booth battled well.

took home three superb Belgian Blue heifers from Tom Holden, of Chaigley, D.E. and P.A. Newbould, of Clitheroe, and A.T. Farms, of Longridge. The increasing demand

for calves from three and four-year TB parishes saw several new buyers present with many calves heading north of the border into Scotland. Aberdeen-based Philip

Foad took home 25 top quality continental calves, while Murray Forbes, of Lockerbie, was the suc cessful bidder for 21 conti nental calves. Averages were: Bulls -

Limousin £214, Belgian Blue £2G9, Simmental £275, Hereford £166. Heifers - Limousin £188, Belgian Blue £220, Here ford £151. Auctioneers were Richard Turner and Son.

Debut boys’ battles The Crusaders team,

consisting of Kieran Gin ger, Eduardo Sig and Michael Mitchell, eventu ally won by 3-0 after some hard-fought games. The chess club breaks

for the summer and will start again on September 4th at the Catholic Social Centre, Lowergate.

Photographer clicks with his talk on landscapes

A RECORD attendance of 83 thoroughly enjoyed a Ribblesdale Camera Club meet ing when special guest Derry Brabbs, the photographer for the Wainwright and James Herriot books, talked about his

landscape photography. The club was delighted to welcome

members of neighbouring camera clubs, various other Ribble Valley clubs and soci eties, and many local people. The James Herriot book was Derry’s

first commission in the field of landscape photography and he soon learned that some of the most effective pictures are taken with a wide angle lens or using a telephoto from a high viewpoint. Unfortunately, camera shake is not

acceptable, so a sturdy tripod must be car ried everywhere. After a project to photograph the Pen

nine Way, a wider collaboration with Alfred Wainwright was proposed. Unfortunately, Wainwrighl’s eyesight

was failing and so they could not walk together, but “A.W.” had an exact image in his mind of places and could produce detailed sketches of locations and camera angles to fit the words. However, the time of day and the quali

ty of light are essential factors in convey ing the essence and feel of a place. Colour temperature of light varies throughout the day, being redder at sun

rise and sunset. Also the track of the sun varies with the seasons. The winter sun is always lower in the

sky and warmer in colour than the sum mer sun. The rare days when the atmosphere is

clear should not be wasted. Derry’s most recent project was to pho

tograph the pilgrimage routes from France to Santiago-de-Compostela in western Spain. This was once solely for the devout, but

is now walked by at least 70,000 people a year, many with different motivations. He told the remarkable story of the

body of St James, executed by King Herod, laid in a boat and eventually washed up on the shores of Galicia, Spain’s northwestern province. The burial place was discovered by a Bishop in 835 who was guided by a star, hence the English translation of Santiago- de-Compostela - St James of the Field of Stars. The talk was witty, gently cynical,

informative and the pictures were superb. It proved an entertaining evening greatly enjoyed by the large audience. O Visit our new website, www.

ditheroeadvertiser.co.uk. to see a selection of pictures taken by members of Ribbles dale Camera Club.
