RECORDS were shattered as more people than ever flocked to enjoy the ninth-annual Chipping Steam Fair. The sun came out as thousands of steam fair

enthusiasts flooded into the picturesque Green Lane Showground to enjoy the varied range of attractions on offer. The highlights this year included Rolls-Royce

engines from classic Second World War aircrafts such as the Bcaufighlcr, the Shackleton and an Alvis Leonides radial engine from a Percival Sea- Prince and two Rolls-Royce Merlins. The spring spectacular also featured its usual

mix of exhibitions of steam engines with hun dreds of entries in the barn engines, classic cars,

pedal cycles, tractors, steam rollers, vintage col lections and a number of working exhibits. The popular three-day event, was opened by

the new Ribble Valley Mayor, Coun. Doreen Taylor and her husband and consort, Douglas, who spent the day browsing around the huge number of indoor and outdoor stalls. It has been hailed a massive success by show

secretary Mrs Mary Harrison. “The weather was brilliant and the fair attracted a record number of exhibitors and visitors,” she comment ed. “Everything went well and without a hitch.

There was something for both the young and old alike.” Mrs Harrison went oil to pay tribute to the

support and dedication of the exhibitors, enthu siasts and volunteers, who rallied round and helped to make the event the success it was.

Junction to close following fatal

A DANGER junction on the Accrington Easterly by-pass is to be closed after an 84-year-old Clitheroe man was killed in a

car crash there. An inquest heard police road

traffic experts had raised concerns about the Sandy Lane junction on the A56 with the Highways Agency and there was now a plan in place to close the central reservation. And coroner Michael Singleton

said he would add his voice to the concerns with a view to "serious and urgent" consideration to modi fications that would prevent fur ther fatalities. The inquest heard that S4 year

old Henry George Hindle, of Lower House Farm, Paythorne, Clitheroe, died when he turned suddenly across the outside lane of the

Southbound carriageway and into the path of a Land-Rover Defend er.

He suffered multiple injuries and

died instantly at the scene of the collision, adjacent to the gap in the central reservation The Land-Rover driver, Neil

Lawrence, said he was travelling up the road when he saw a red car in the inside lane travelling slowly. He pulled into the outside lane

and as he got to about 20 feet from the red car it suddenly turned right across his path and he hit it flush on the driver's door. "There wasn't time to sound the

horn," said Mr Lawrence, who had his wife and their three-month-old daughter in the car with him. "All I remember is slamming on the brakes and holding on to the

RIBCHESTER could house the Royal Lancashire Show for the final time this

year. It has been revealed that preliminary

talks are taking place that could see the show move from its Salesbury site on the village outskirts, to Duchy of Lan caster land at Myerscough. A planning application for the duchy

land is to be submitted to Wyre Coun cil, possibly early next year. A spokesman for the duchy has confirmed that the vision is for the former Myer scough quarry to house a new park to include a new showground which it is hoped would be home to the Royal Lancashire Agricultural Society. Initial talks have been held with the society who will be canvassing members to assess support for the principle. The park, which could be named the Duke of Lancaster Park, would help to sup port the rural economy and provide something of lasting value to Lan cashire residents. Show chairman Gordon Roberts has

said that society officials are currently looking at two options for a possible re location, but declined to say if Myer scough was one of them. He said that the position should be clear by mid- June.

steering wheel", he added. Police sergeant Peter Sculpher

said Sandy Lane was little more than a farm track, but the junc tion, which has short deceleration lanes, was also used by vehicles exe cuting a U-turn. "There have been concerns about

the junction because of the speed and volume of traffic using the by pass," said Sgt Sculpher. "The road has a 70 m.p.h. speed

limit and while it doesn't have hard shoulders it is driven like a motor way." He said his predecessors had

started discussions with the High ways Agency and as a result a plan had been drawn up to close the cen tral reservation. Mr Singleton recorded a verdict of accidental death.
