4! 28 Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, Thursday, December 27th, 2007 8 .Valiev And Finally featuring a seasonal look at Valley life

has apparently rocketed skyward by 203% since last Christmas. Not that it is alone - red wine is up 41 % and

cans of lager 24%, although, curiously, they are still cheaper than bottled water! In fact, on average, catering for Christmas has

cost you 6% more than last year. • Averages are wonderful. Did you know that if

you are the average woman you have spent £656 on Christmas this year, but should be relieved because your husband, Mr Average, has had to cough up £756, a 7% increase on 2006? How did we ever manage without those dedi

cated researchers, whose only desire is to light up our lives over Christmas with everything we preferred not to know! Still, unwilling to settle for the notion that igno

rance is bliss, I decided to join them and retreat a full century, exploring what was available in those pre-electronic media days of December, 1907. It was, of course, a different world, with one

and a half million people "in service" and, in the 100,000 pubs in England and Wales, the women stashed away in the snug to avoid interfering with the serious drinking that was the preserve of the men.

Unless the women were ladies, in which case

they would be hanging around a different kind of bar, as they hung from the ceiling being squeezed into the corset that would give them the 16in. waist that was all the rage in the early 1900s. No need here for Page Woodcock's famous Wind Pills!

Torture Was this a form of Edwardian torture? Appar

ently not according to The Medical Battery Com pany, with its Harness Electric Corsets. Its adver tisement claimed: "The chest is aided in its healthy development',' although there is no men tion of how it rearranged the internal organs to accommodate this mighty bust - sorry, dyslexia lures - boost! Bombarded as we are with advertising, at least

we have a degree of sophistication that usually allows us to recognise claims that are outrageous, even in the search for Christmas presents, but a century ago this may not have been the case. The Irish may have been only too happy to

believe that The Doctor's Special Rum was "pre scribed by the medical profession" but could any one fall for th.e claims that Joy’s cigarettes "cure asthma" or that Whiteway's Woodbine blend dry cider relieved "rheumatism and gout"? Would we invest in a bottle of Mason's wine essence to make "one gallon delicious wine" for children's parties? In pursuit of something more wholesome, I

consulted the Clitheroe Times of December, 1907 to see what was tempting Christmas shoppers in the Ribble Valley. Curiously it'was the newspaper office itself that was the main source of toys, with a special "grand show of dolls',' although Mrs Cheseborough was offering the Ingersoll Crown for only five shillings - "A man’s watch at a boy’s price'.'

One can only guess what was behind the announcement: "The Misses Standen are again showing the usual stock of Xmas novelties"! For adults, Theo Wilson was offering pocket and table cutlery, M. Swinburne had jewellery, clocks,

A Umiolosa ndvurtleomont for u tustolons 1000a product m

watches and silver goods, including electro-plat ing, while for that special present with a differ ence, the Brownlow Arms was selling 50 tons of horse manure! On the provisions front, it was much more fes

tive, with W.D. Cunliffe offering the special delights of tinned, bottled and crystallised fruits, as well as figs, dates and raisins, even French and Californian plums, biscuits, jellies and bonbons, and finest smoked Wiltshire home-cured ham. For more meat, Warburton's and Dawson’s

stocked the full Christmas range from hare to pheasant, although poverty may have made Ful- lalove’s Brawn and Beef Stew a more affordable alternative - unless you happened to be an unwary rat. "A few hours after using Rodine Rat Poison, I

found 275 rats. I have been a ratcatcher for 45 years and never saw anything so deadly. Rats like it, eat it and die," stated the advertisement. Otherwise it was business as usual. Funeral

director, J.R Garlick - motto, "At any time at a minute's notice" - perhaps belatedly "takes this opportunity of thanking his customers for past favours’,' before announcing "the finest car hearse in Lancashire -

rubber-tyred." To postpone such a stylish final journey, there

was Zambuk for scalp sores - "Many are the homes made happy by Zambuk','Chas Ford’s Bile Beans "for Xmas biliousness" or Doan’s Backache and Kidney Pills, with their harrowing story of Mrs

Sarah Sarson, who had lost three unborn babies in three years due to dropsy, but, thanks entirely to Doan's, her fourth was born perfectly healthy. Finally, for those in any doubt, there was Dr

Williams Pink Pills for Pale People. It was claimed these would cure almost everything, from black smiths' backaches to "Ladies Ailments"! However, seasonal pride of place went to

Bracewell's - "Christmas presents in great vari ety'.' They not only found Father Christmas living in Ivy Cottage, Moor Lane, but published his salu tary letter to local children, including:

"Now my dear boys and girls, I am very sorry

indeed to tell you that after last Christmas, on Thursday, January 3rd, a policeman came and read over a notice telling me I was the cause of a breach of one of your town’s bye-laws, and that if the offence was repeated next Christmas I should be proceeded against, and was signed by the Chief Constable." His offence? Causing litter in the streets - and

rather than face imprisonment, he vowed not to distribute gifts in Clitheroe if children were again careless with their wrapping paper. What a green Santa - and a lesson for us all! So, as we review the excesses or otherwise of.

our own festivities, let us raise a glass to the New Year. And why not - everything else has gone up in the old one!
