November 26th this year, was in Wuzhen, China. It was fairly late in the day, about 4- 30p.m., and rather dark. However my Nikon D80 at iso1600 and 'flat out' at 1/40th at F3.5 managed very well and the shot is not manipu lated. NOTHER year has flown by and many of us will be reflecting on the past as

we consider our hopes for the future.ln the Ribble Valley, 2008 looks like being a momentous year with various major schemes in the pipeline. The former Grand Cinema is

due to open its doors in March and take on a new innovative role asThe Grand following a multi-million pound renovation. Clitheroe's Castle is part way

through a major revamp in a bid to make it fit for the future. And the Ribble Valley is to

have a purpose built college, Aspire, based at Barrow provid ing follow-on training for the area's 16-pluses. On the commercial front, the

area appears to be quietly buoy ant with companies and Individu als working hard to ensure future growth. As stated last week, talks are

taking place with regards to the future of St Mary's Centre, the former Clitheroe Parish Church Hall. It is currently home to many organisations and, despite the lengthy debate about local cine ma provision, has continued to ensure it survives in the town. Whether the centre will eventu ally fulfil a role as the town’s "vil-, lage hall" only time will tell. Opinions differ regarding the overall suitability of the site and the first few months of 2008 will certainly be crucial to the former parish hall’s long-term future. On the subject of cinema pro

vision, I recently accepted an invitation to attend the end-of- year film show by Ribble Valley Camcorder Club. I was amazed to find the Lowergate Car Park full on a chilly Friday night, and more than 100 people of all ages assembled in the Parish Hall at St Michael and St John's, eagerly anticipating home-grown film , treats. The event was a huge success, the quality of the films first class and the meat and potato pie supper an added bonus.'- Given the club’s growing

membership and professional ism. could this be the way for ward for local cinema? I certainly enjoyed the camcorder club's production and feel sure the rest

of the audience would welcome i .• I I I I . .1 ■ in t ■ ■ r. m i i I

more of the same. The Lower- gate building is another central venue with the added advantage of adjacent car parking and is already utilised by many organi sations. With Christmas now behind

us, the toys so generously donated by our readers have been distributed throughout the Ribble Valley. The response was phenomenal and, on behalf of the staff here and the Salvation Army, may I express all our thanks to all those who donated goods and money. • With best wishes for a healthy and happy 2008. Enjoy the Valley. Vivien meath
