A daughter’s moving tribute to a much loved and missed dad

MY dad Paul Wilson, the Clitheroe locksmith, was a wonderful loving kind person who would help anyone in a cri sis with information on where to go for lock replacements. He also loved meeting the wide vari

ety of people who came into his shop. When he first started we lived in Fair-

field Drive and he was doing by then many outside jobs, as well as cutting keys. It was a laugh seeing him do his job,

which I could not do until he taught me in the 1990s and I became, and still am, the only lady locksmith in the whole of Lancashire. I was so sad to give this up in July 2001 because I got diabetes, but dad and mum still employed me to take the sales area on and answer telephone calls. It was such a great thing to be a lock

smith because we all went to so many conventions and area meetings. We met other locksmiths and heard their tales of how many locks people in Manches ter, Liverpool and London have on their doors. It was an amazing experience to hear their stories. My mum, Muriel, died about eight

years ago and it left a void in mine and dad’s life. It was after her death that dad started to get worse and I had to be his sole carer. It was not very good because not only was I caring for him, he was caring for me and we got no money for it. I know it is only three months since

he passed on but I still miss his cheek and the talks we had and how both of

A difficult year ends on a| festive high for farmers

AFTER a difficult year for livestock farm ers there was some festive cheer when a first class entry of 250 prime cattle were forward at Gisburn’s Auction Mart’s Christmas prime cattle show and sale. Judge Andrew Atkinson picked out the

champion, a 21-month old Blonde d’Aquitaine cross heifer, weighing 552kgs, from 21-year-old Hayley Baines, of Trawden. The renowned Fisherman’s Retreat restaurant, in Ramsbot- tom, again snapped up the champion beast at £2,208, or 400p per kgs. Prime beef from this animal will be on the menu over the New Year at the restaurant. Beef farmers Richard and Julie Critchley, of

Hutton, Preston, had a very successful day when they picked the reserve champion award with their Belgian Blue heifer. Scaling 580kgs, she sold for £1,711 (295p per kg), again to the Fisherman’s Retreat restaurant. The Critchleys also won the first prize

rosette in the best steer class with their 14- month-old Limousin steer. Weighing 518kgs, he sold for £876 (169 per kg) to quality butch-

. er Matthew Mitchell, of Newsholme. Prime beef from this animal is destined for the tables of various Ribble Valley restaurants supplied by Matthew. Keeping success in the family, Mr and Mrs

us, along with a customer, would put the world to rights. I thank the two people who wrote fit

ting tributes to dad. I miss you a lot dad and so does Mat-

tie the dog. She still goes into his room looking for him - that will never leave her or me as I do that too sometimes and have a little cry. God bless you dad.

ZOE WILSON, Clithcroc

Critchley’s son, Thomas, beat off strong com petition in the Young Farmers’ class to pick up the red rosette with his fleshy Belgian Blue heifer, later selling for for £966 (170p per kg). The first prize young bull, a homebred Bel

gian Blue, again from Hayley Baines, sold for £1,182 (190p per kg). Auctioneers were Richard Turner & Son and the show sponsors were P. M. & M. Chartered Accountants. Averages per kg were: Premium heifers

172p/kg; premium steers 151p/kg; young bulls 137p/kg. Our picture shows Hayley Baines with her champion Blonde d’Aquitaine cross heifer. (G061207/2)
