62 Clitheroe Advertisers Times, Thursday, February 22nd, 2007. Green battle back

'HursL Green . . ..*,............................. 2 EAST Lancashire League leaders Hurst Green had to battle back from behind to extend their lead atihe top of the table. On their trip to Stacksteads they were presented with a very poor pitch which

Stacksleads SlJoseph’s ...................1

'Tfc'made attractive football difficult, and meant that the ball was out of play more than in play. But the game started wi?h the home

side in the ascendancy, and they took the lead when Tim Farragher found the tar get with a deflected shot from 20 yards after 10 minutes. That strike brought an improved per

formance from Hurst Green, and within 15 minutes they were level when Ian Simpson broke from midfield and fin ished well from just inside the penalty area. In a half of few chances, Danny Walk

er had a shot well blocked from close range, and a Simon Tipton free kick was cleared off the line.

■ The second half saw Hurst Green

again having the better of the chances, \vith Ian Barton heading narrowly wide at the far post, and Walker shooting just over the top after a good run. They got the goal their pressure

deserved when Andy Whaites rose bril liantly to head home a Tipton free kick, following a foul on Craig Dewhurst. After that Stacksteads pushed hard for

an equaliser, but the table-toppers had chances to further increase their lead when Mark Young shot over, and then hit the top of the bar with a long-range effort. Again Stacksteads came back at the

locals, but resolute defending from Dave Young, Zac Foley, Tony Coupe and the outstanding Phil Walker meant that Steve' Young was rarely troubled in the Hurst Green goal. Manager Andy Holden was delighted

with the three points, and is now looking forward to Saturday’s game at home to Worsthorne (2-15 p.m.) as they look to maintain their 12-point lead at the top of the table.

Cup holders live to fight on

Barnoldswick Town . .0 Ripminglon ............... 0 HOLDERS Rimington kept one hand on the Craven Cup after a solid, if not breathtaking, per formance in this quarter final tie. .The home side proved

very physical in testing the visitors' resolve, but after several over-aggres- sive challenges and a booking for one player, play calmed down, and some neat football was played by both sides with out either really dominat ing.

Midway through the

first half of this quarter final, Jordan Walmesley and Ollie Maclean took a grip of the game, and Rimington s ta r ted to carve out one or two

chances, the best of which fell to M at t Coulter, whose run on goal seemed destined to be the opening goal, but he was denied by a smart save. Barnoldswick had some

promising situations, but rarely troubled Kershaw, whose defenders protected throughout. Nick Curtis' return to

the side made a huge dif ference as he dominated from start to finish, and on the rare occasion he made a mistake, he had the pace and determina tion to correct it. The,home side had

more possession in the sec ond half and pushed the visitors back. This led to one or two chances being created, but they could not apply the killer strike.

Extra time arrived and

Rimington finished the game strongly, Maclean covering every blade of grass on the pitch. O'Neill put a beautiful

pass through for the ram paging Alan Sayle, but a last-ditch tackle prevent ed what looked a certain goal, and Sayle was lucky to avoid serious injury as he fell awkwardly. In the dying seconds

Mankowski made a typi cal late surge into the box, but the ball ran away from him as he looked to win the game for his side. So they must do it all

again at Rimington in a few weeks time, but first they face a tough fixture at Goodshaw on Saturday.

lA-Waddington through to sem i- f in a l

Waddinglon .......................... ............4 Gransinglon U ld ................................3

WADd In GTON booked their place in the semi-final of the Craven Cup after a hard-fought victory over Grassington. The locals started strongly, but went a

goal behind when Pete Dugdale was caught in possession, and a weak shot at goal by a visiting player was deflected past Leach in the home goal. , The lead was short-lived, however, as ■

following a period of sustained pressure, Martin Cane headed home from a Stephen Holden corner. Waddington took the lead on the half

hour when a good inter-passing move . involving Holden, Lloyd and Dean result-

f'^ed in the latter being brought down in the penalty area. Fletcher scored from the spot to give the

home side a 2-1 lead. The same player could have scored

again 10 minutes later when he cut into the area from the left flank, only to see his fierce shot cannon off the bar to safety. ■ The home side went into a 3-1 lead just

I'^l'.goal.

before the interval when Rob Lloyd's shot hit a defender and was deflected into the ' _

Ten minutes into the second half, it was

4-1 when Simon Holden cleverly moved . into space to collect a throw in, and his

pass found Lloyd in the penalty area, who scored from close range. But, as in previous meetings with their

opponents, Waddington once again pressed the self destruct button. The visitors pulled back a goal midway

through the second half when Wadding- ton's back four were caught square, and allowed three forward players to run through and score a relatively simple goal. Grassington scored a third goal when

one of their players was allowed to get a cross in from a very tight angie. -And with the home defenders failing to

clear their lines, the ball was scrambled home from close range. In the final 10 minutes, Waddington

should have increased their lead, but good chances were missed by Lloyd and Sam Dean. At the final whistle it was a relieved

Waddington team which had managed to hang on to their slender lead and progress to the last four of the cup. On Saturday Waddington once again

face Grassington, this time in the quarter finals of the Premier Division League Cup. Kick-off for this game is 1-30 p.m. Players will be selected by phone and

should be at Waddington Pavilion at 12- 45 a.m. at the latest.

Grindlelon................. 0 GRINDLETON’S indif ferent s ta r t to the year continued on Saturday against a side they had beaten 5-1 earlier in the season. Manager Sean Lloyd

was forced into wholesale changes, but the village side should have given a better account of them selves, and left Holt House with no more than they deserved. Grindleton started the

brighter, but found them selves a goal behind when an Intake striker poked the ball home from a comer. In the second half, the

locals went further behind, after lax defending allowed the centre forward to race through and finish. If the away side thought

things couldn’t get any worse, they did, when stand-in keeper James Dri ver conceded a penalty which the striker duly dis patched. The rout was completed

when Intake again scored from a corner. Coming after Grindle-

ton’s best performance of the season against Pendle Athletic, the villagers struck rock bottom here. It was a performance lit

tered with poor individual performances and Grindle ton, who are without a game this weekend, need to pick themselves up to ensure the wheels don’t fall off their faltering season. Full back Jamie Clark

son picked up his third man-of-the-match award in four games. WFCClilheroe.......... 7 Bronte Wanderers___1 WAGGON bounced back from their defeat against league leaders Oxenhope with a crushing victory over Bronte at Roefield.

Veteran Geoff Young

opened the scoring after a flowing move down the left that involved Oakley and a neat pass from Stoddart. This soon became 1-1,

but that was to be the only sniff the visitors got. Wide man Oakley got a

second direct from a cor ner, before a sublime lob from Sullivan made it 3-1 at the break. Then Dinsdale; who

made an impact when he replaced the off-pace Stod dart, hit the post when it was easier to score, but he made amends when he hit a sweet volley into the cor ner of the net. A fifth goal came cour

tesy of Sullivan when he beat the full back for pace down the right, and fired into the roof of the net from 10 yards. Strikes ■ from Geoff

Young and Chris Oakley completed the rout. ■ Waggon are now looking

for a strong finish to the season. They are still in both cups and are now steadily climbing the league! Ciitheroe Lions ......... 5 Cowling........ ............... 1 CLITHEROE Lions con tinued their recent winning run to stay the. top of the Craven League First Divi- sion-and strengthen their hopes of promotion. On a pitch resembling a

swamp, the Lions made a dreadful start when the usually reliable Mashiter spilled a harmless cross, allowing the striker the simple job of tapping home after only a minute. This rare error was

somewhat made up for moments later with an unbelievable save from the keeper, .plucking the ball from the top corner at full stretch. This early spell of Cowl- .

ing pressure seemed to wake the Lions up, and jus t minutes later, the excellent Pinard turned two defenders inside out before slotting home to level the scores. Several chances were

then spurned by the home side before Pinard slotted home a header to put the Lions in front. Within seconds of the

restart, the locals went fur ther ahead when Holgate punished some slack defendingfrom an immac ulate Gaughan through- ball, rounding the Cowling keeper and firing home. Memories of Rene

Heguita’s Wembley scorpi on kick were relived rhoments later, as Holgate scored his second with an overhead backheeler that had the crowd gasping in amazement. With Cowling fast run

ning out of steam, and Paul Clegg and Hamilton mopping up any rare attacks at the back, the Lions were awarded a •penalty for a push on Hol gate, who unselfishly let ' Gaughan take the spot kick. A scuffed shot resulted

in an easy save for the keeper, but Pinard was on hand to save any blushes by completing a memo rable hat-trick. Centre Forward Zak

Holgate was named man- of-the-match for a lively and unselfish performance upfront, epitomised in the last minute when he rolled the ball to the electric John Mashiter, who was unlucky to see his thunder ous 20-yard effort rebound off the keeper’s legs. The.Lions’ next game is

on Saturday at home to Intake, with a league cup semi-final place the prize for the winners.

Sunday at Morecambe. The side beat Todmod-

sarhe score to Halliwell in the semis, despite South- well and Tracey Parker recording 3-0 victories.

ITofces Under 14s .. .4 Brier field Celtic Blue 1 THE Wolves resumed their league fixtures wth a routine victory. Despite the absence of

three key players, the locals dominated play and created the niajori- ty of chances. The first and third

goals were scored by Sam Longford on'his left-wing debut. He scored his first at

the near post following a corner from Joe Swier czynski, and cracked in an excellent left-foot vpl ley for his second to cap an excellent display. Longford also crossed

for Max Harrison to score his second goal late in the game after the man-of-the-match had scored his first from an excellent run from Jack Dewhurst. Whalley Juniors Under 14s >.............. 1 Accrington,Stanley .2 WHALLE'Y slipped to only their second defeat of the season against a powerful Accrington. Stanley grabbed the

lead midway through the half following a cor ner, but for the rest of the half both teams had chances, w th both keep ers making fine saves! The second half saw

more of the same, but Whalley conceded a sec ond from another cor ner, before Connor Rip ley pulled one back with a 25-yard thunderbolt. Seb Cerami was

Whalley’s man-of-the- match, but all 11 players performed well. Langho Under 11s ..5 Accrington Stanley .1 IN-FORM striker Sean Holmes hit all five goals as Langho stormed into the cup semi-finals.'" A goal in the first

minute set the tone for a fabulous team effort from the locals who, bar one costly slip, con trolled the match throughout with excel lent teamwork. Holmes rightly took

the plaudits for a won derful display, but Lang ho are sure to meet tougher opposition in the semi-final. ■ Darwen Rangers . . .2 Langhg Under 10s . .2 THIS was. a tough, hard-fought game that saw Langho battle to back from a two-goal deficit.

■. The locals didn'.t give up hope, and main tained pressure on. the home team after a poor start.

_ Excellent goalkeeping

from Chris Moore and Liam Kallin^on, with a spirited defence led by man-of-the-match Jack Stones, kept Langho in thegarrie.,'. 'The second half saw a

series of chances and near misses from Lang ho, and goals from Rob bie Blow and Patrick Fordham secured the draw.

Clilheroe RUFC . . . . .19 Charley ................. .29 THIS was another disap pointing result for Ciitheroe, as Chorley avenged their opening day defeat. However, things looked

good early doors for the Maroons. They were dan gerous in attack and soon were camped in enemy ter ritory. Oliver McEntyre broke

from the back of a scrum, rounded the fringe defence and put wingman Brian Wood over for a classic try of its type. But Chorley, using their

■1

bulky back line to good effect, made strong inroads into the Ciitheroe haE One try was followed by

another, and the locals were chasing the game. Undaunted, they took

Chorley head on up front, and strong driving mauls got them into a scoring position.

A half break from fly

half Nathan Peel was turned into a full-on charge for the line, as he ducked under a tackle for a try, which he converted. But after the turn

round, disaster struck straight away when Chor ley scored another from close range. Ciitheroe threw the

kitchen sink at Chorley, but in spite of camping on the line, they were held up time and time again. Eventually a maul was

rumbled to within a yard of the line, and second rower Steve Dowson was unstoppable from short- range. Peel'adding the extras. However, Ciitheroe

could not breach the line again. This week the side face a

trip to leaders Ashton under Lyne.

Clilheroe Buccaneers Under 1 5 s ................19 Burnley

..........15

A NEW look Ciitheroe Buccaneers entertained local rivals Burnley in a . sizzler of a game. The first score went to

the locals as a powerful maul took the home side to within 10 metres of the line, and hooker Tom Nicholson drove over, Mth the try converted. The following 20 min

utes saw the game taken s traight back into the Ciitheroe half, and the Burnley number eight took the ball at pace and scored on the right wing. With the score at 7-5, it

looked like the home team were looking down the barrel of a gun. The second half saw

Burnley take the initiative and they began to throw the ball out wide, with immense interplay result ing in another try.

Ciitheroe weren’t to be

outdone, however, and replacement Sam Higson ran 60 metres, only to be stopped by the full back. 'The ball was quickly

recycled, however, and second row James Gordon outpaced the opposition to score in the left comer. Burnley managed a

third try from some pow erful forward play, but Ciitheroe, from within their 22, saw the ball gath ered by Scott Craig, who bulldozed his way up the park. The ball was spun out

wide to Sam Rainer, who skirted the would be tack- lers to score in the corner and see the conversion give the team a four-point lead. The last few minutes

were nail biting, but an awesome try-stopping tackle from Rainer on the line saw the locals to ■vic tory.

Clilheroe Ladies’HC .0 Longridge Ladies’ 2nds0 CLITHEROE were denied the win they want ed to maintain their pro motion charge by local rivals Longridge on Satur day. The game started at a

fast and furious pace, and only excellent saves from the Longridge keeper kept the scores level. Longridge continued to

pack their defensive area, much to the locals' frus tration. In the second half, very •

much like the first, Ciitheroe moved the ball around the pitch, but were unable to score despite being awarded a number of penalty corners. Morecambe Ladies 3rds 0 Ciitheroe 2nds ...........7 CLITHEROE enjoyed one of their best perform ances this season in a con- ■vincing win. Ciitheroe got off to a great start, scoring three

goals in the first'12 min utes. The fourth Ciitheroe

goal was a great shot worked from a short cor ner routine, and jus t before halLtime, after excellent, passing up the wing, Ciitheroe scored a fifth. In the second half,

Ciitheroe scored another two goals from open play. Players-of-the-Match

were Fran Griffiths and Stef Teece. • CLITHEROE

Juniors were in action on Sunday at Preston Sports Arena where they enjoyed two wins in three games. Ciitheroe beat Black

pool 1-0 after good attack ing play made an opening for Stef Teece to power the ball past the keeper. Ciitheroe followed this

with a narrow 2-1 defeat against a very strong Lytham St Annes, with Teece again on target. Clitheroe’s final game
