motoring, a reputation enhanced by the class-leading L200 pick-up. But both of these vehicles are
mountain-climbing types, renowned for their ability to get you out of the toughest of situa-
. tions, and for many of us this is overkill. The fastest growing sec tor of the 4x4 market wants a vehicle with safe on-road dynam ics, with the ability to tackle tracks or fields; plenty room for passengers and cargo; and a supe rior view. So enter the brand-new Mitsubishi Outlander. SUVs have increased in popu
Why this latest Sport Utility Vehicle looks set for stardom E
v e r since Mitsubishi launched the Shogun in 1982, its name has been synonymous with the best in 4x4
larity, primarily because they provide similar interior space and flexibility to an MPV but, with their spirit of freedom and adven ture, in a way which is far more appealing to modern motorists. The flip side is their reputation for riding roughshod over envi ronmental issues. But this accusa tion cannot be levelled at the Outlander. It can seat seven on the school run, yet its footprint is smaller than that of a VWPassat estate and it will give you, on average, better than 40 mpg. Its CO2 emissions levels are good, too, putting it in the lowest VBD band of any SUV with this seat ing capacity. And, while it will provide even more than usual big-
car protection in a collision, it's been designed to do so in such a way as to minimise injury to pedestrians or damage vehicles lighter than itself. • So there are no good reasons
not to enjoy the Outlander, but what is there to enjoy? Well, it's
certainly good looking. It handles well too. SUV the Outlander actually operates in front wheel drive for everyday
use.Tn adverse road conditions or when attack ing a dirt track, a four-wheel drive auto mode transfers torque between the front and rear axles.
While the Outlander is not intended to be a 4x4 in the vein of the Shogun, i t is actually extremely competent off-road. But when it comes to the cabin
the Outlander goes beyond com- petent to downright clever. There is a commanding view as befits an SUV; yet the semi-bucket front seats are set jiist at hip height for easy access. The second row of seats recline for comfort, slide backwards and fonvards for prac ticality, split and provide a single action auto-fold facility. The third row (available in Warrior and Elegance models) can fold flat into the floor in seconds. The dash is well laid out and there are some inspired touches
like the controlled-temperature glovebox, solar-trapping glass and odour-eating roof! Excellent spec ification levels include ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution, front, side and curtain airbags, air conditioning, electric door mir rors and windows, cruise control. Blue Tooth hands-free, 30-giga byte hard drive satellite naviga tion and a 650w, nine-speaker, immerse-yourself-in-sound audio system depending on which model you choose. Prices start from £19,449 on the road. • You can see the New Out
lander at Horners Mitsubishi Accrington Road, Burnley, or telephone 08444 990 968 to arrange a test drive.

F you are in the market for a compact estate car, Vauxhall may well have your number. Whether you knew it or not,
that number is 1,570. That’s the amount of cubic litres of space in the back of the latest Astra estate with the rear seats folded, down and it’s a big number. Big ger than you might expect of an Astra estate but, then this car does have a trick or two up its sleeve. When Vauxhall announced the
Vectrhi estate, i t used the stretched chassis of the Signum as a basis, this giving excellent load lugging abilities and ample passenger room. It has adopted a similar tack with the Astra estate, using a stretched version of the Astra hatch chassis with another nine centimetres stitched into the car’s wheelbase and longer rear overhangs to give a- fairly spacious luggage compart ment. Although rivals may be able to offer more in the way of total volume, the Vauxhall coun ters by dint of its practicality. For a start, the load bay has
straight side walls and storage areas below the floor and in either side, maximising the amount of genuinely useable space available. A stainless steel rim protects the conveniently low boot sill from scratches. The rear bench seat splits 60/40 although there is an option of a nattier 40/20/40 split system. Vauxhall’s FlexOrganiser is also offered as an option. This
system organises the rear loading space into separate compart ments and now features horizon tal side rails in anodised alumini um.
The engine line up consists of
the usual wide selection of power- plants, some new, some familiar and some heavily revised. Recent changes include the addition of a new 1.6-litre petrol turbo unit, developing 178bhp. This same en^ne is offered in TWINPORT guise mthout the turbo, develop ing 114bhp. These changes apart, the line-up kicks off with an 85bhp 1.4-litre petrol unit, with the familiar 125bhp 1.8-litre engine sitting above the new TWINPORT powerplant. There’s a 200bhp 2.0-litre turbo petrol unit for those after some serious speed. Three-diesel engines are avail
able in 1.7-litre 100 and 1.9-litre 120bhp forms plus a beefy ISObhp 1.9-litre powerplant that has been developed by Fiat. As would be expected, all three meet the Euro IV emissions regula tions which means that business users won’t have to pay the oner ous 3% ‘benefit in kind’ sur charge that drivers of non-com- pliant cars get tapped up for. If you’re looking for a not so
compact estate car, your Vaux hall dealer could well be your first and last port of call.
