THE house moving industry is a seasonal one: most people move in the spring and summer given a choice. That makes perfect sense of course, but, according to the British Association of

Removers (BAR), when the busy time comes it makes sense to book your move early if you can. , - The removals trade

association says that many people are caught short when they assume th a t , their friendly ^ moving man will be ready to S transport their M worldly posses- M sions a t a >

moment’s notice. “During the

quiet times, espe cially in January and February, mov ing coinpanies often have spare capacity, but the rest of the year customers need to plan ahead,” said BAR spokesman Paul Swindon. “The pressure on the moving industry really

heats up at the end of every week - people like to move on Fridays - at the end of each month - people in rented accommodationi stay as long as possible - and at the end of each quarter. I t ’s also busier during the summer school holidays as families relocate after their children finish school so they can start afresh at

the beginning of the new term. “So if you are moving house, try not tp move on a

„ 5

Friday, particularly if i t ’s the last Friday in the month. If it’s the last Friday in March, June or Sep tember, stay well clear. Most moving com panies will charge higher rates for moving on these traditionally busy days.” Paul added: “It you do have to move house dur ing a busy period, try to be first on the list by giving your mover as much notice as pos- sible. People often wait u ntil they have a completion date, then call the mover tor an esti mate. I t ’s much better if they have their survey and choose their pre ferred moving com pany while the house is still up for sale.

' / s / ' . When the house is sold' 'k'P it’s then easy to give a rea

sonable period of notice. Two weeks is usually enough.

“There's a lot to think about when you are moving house and often, booking the

movers gets forgotten until the last minute. If you have a ‘For Sale’ board outside your house right now, why not give your local BAR member a call - maybe the next phone call will be from the buyer you’ve been hoping for. Don't forget - if you are moving, look for the BAR badge!”

Search to find best rural property in land

A NEW award scheme to find the best rural build ings across England and Wales has been launched by the Country Land and Business Association (CLA). The CLA Rural Buildings Awards, in association

with Knight Frank, is one of the CLA’s Centenary initiatives and will showcase the very best new or converted rural buildings that reflect not only a wide range of diversification projects,'but also high quali ty design and workmanship. These can be anything from affordable housing,

holiday accommodation, business units, farm shops, restaurants, traditional farm buildings, sporting facilities or tourism projects. Douglas Chalmers, director CLA North, said:

“The built heritage of our countryside is constantly evolving to match the changing opportunities in our

rural economy. ; The CLA Rural Buildings Awards scheme will

illustrate how rural businesses can take advantage of modern design and yet can recognise the importance of fitting in with the existing environment.” Sandy Douglas, head of Knight Frank Rural Con

sultancy, said: ‘"There has been a beneficial shift in the use of rural hiiiiriine.s. nrnvidinv diversified rev

enue for the landowner, new uses for old and often these important buildings contribute to the commu nity.' “This trend will continue which is why we are

pleased to be involved in the project with the CLA. “As well as looking for good design, the judges will

take into account projects which fit in with their environment, benefit the local community and have considered energy efficiency.” Awards are made regionally across two categories -

new and converted buildings. Entries are judged to a standard, not against each other. A further award will be made by the CLA Presi

dent selected from among the regional category award winners. ■Winners mil be announced in November 2007 and

will receive a commemorative plaque and certificates at an award ceremony in London in December 2007. The deadline for entries is April 30th. For more information on the scheme and details of how to enter: O visit the centenary section at www.cIa.org.uk • e-mail ruralbuildings@cla.org.uk a or call 01.539 567.597.

THINK you might need to obtain plan' ning permission when carrying out work on your home, but have no idea where to begin? Are you the owner of a small business

starting up or expanding your business? Are you concerned about influencing the

policies and plans that guide decisions on . housing, regeneration, development and conversation in the area where you live? Two free guides to the workings of the

planning system, setting out all the infor mation you need to understand the system in England, have been launched by Plan ning Aid and Urban Forum - organisations dedicated to empowering local people so they can effectively influence decisions affecting their neighbourhoods The “Planning Pack”, the more detailed

of the guides, -contains a series of 17 fact sheets providing an in depth explanation of the different aspects of the planning sys tem including:

' O Applying for planning permission • Commenting on planning applications • Small businesses and the planning sys

tem • How to influence planning decisions in

your area. The “Planning Pack” supplements

Urban Forum’s “Handy Guide to Plan ning”, which provides a more basic intro-

Route map through the jungle of planning rules and regulations

, duction to the planning system. This new guide has been written for community and voluntary organisations and individuals with limited experience of the planning process. I t gives a good overview of the planning system and helpful tips on how to get more involved and influence decision making a t both regional and local level. Sheena Terrace, from Planning Aid, said:

“The planning system can be complex to understand and therefore intimidating, which is why we have produced these new, free guides to help individuals, community groups and businesses get to grips with the process.” Urban Forum Chief Executive, Toby

Blume, said: “Most communities’ experi ence of engaging m th the planning system tends to be opposing planning applications they don’t want. We need to help commu nities understand how they can influence decisions about what happens in their areas in a more pro-active way. The Handy Guide and the Planning Pack help commu nities to make sense of, and engage with, planning in their area.”

Both guides are available online from

available from Urban Forum. For a hard copy call 020 72534816 or e-mail: info@urbanforum.org.uk
