Vandal attacks: someone could be killed - police

by. Faiza Afzaal

POLICE believe a high-powered cat apult is being used in a series of van dalism attacks in the Kibble Valley. Stones and pebbles have been the mis

siles used to smash house and car windows across the borough in 35 separate inci dents, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage. A major investigation is now underway

into the life-threatening actions of the vandals as officers work round-the-clock with neighbouring police to catch those responsible. Attacks were reported on Sunday, Mon

day and Tuesday evening. Stationary cars and homes were the main targets, but in several instances motorists had a lucky escape as moving vehicles were fired at. Police believe the stones, which have

been recovered, were fired from the win dow of a moving car during the vandalism spree, which began in Mellor and made its way through Whalley, Clitheroe, Chat- burn and Grindleton. I t is believed there have been similar

attacks in Ribchester, Hurst Green and Longridge too. The vandals continued leaving a trail of

destruction, smashing windows locally and 25 properties and vehicles in Hynd-

burn. Sgt Mark Porter, of Glitheroe Police, has warned that these offences are being treated extremely seriously and has vowed to catch the culprits. Although no one was hurt this time, he

said the incidents could have resulted in serious injury and even death. He said: “I t ’s just mindless vandalism.

These offenders don’t realise th a t they have been putting lives at risk. “I t may be a bit of a fun to them, but someone could have easily been hurt or

■ even killed. “I t ’s just almost beyond belief that any

one can do this and get any kind of enjoy ment from it. We believe a high-powered catapult was used to projectile the stones and pebbles through the windows. “There have been similar incidents

across Hyndburn and we are working closely with police in Accrington, Great Harwood and Blackburn to combat this. “No one seems to have seen the vehicle,

' but we believe somebody out there knows who is responsible for these attacks.

- “We would urge them to come forward in an attempt to prevent further damage and perhaps loss of life.” If you have any information regarding

the vehicle or the vandals'behind the attacks, please call Clitheroe Police on 443344, or th e free-and-confidential Crimestoppers line on 0800 555111.

I First look at Ribble Valley’s new racecourse

THIS is the first glimpse of how East Lancashire’s, first multi million pound racecourse will look. Plans for the state-of-the-art

facility, to be built on land . between the Ribble Valley and Hyndburn, are on track. And, if given the go-ahead, the ambi tious scheme is expected to cre

ate several hundred permanent jobs and around 1,000 casual jobs on race days alone. • For the full story, turn to
