Brierfield Celtic Blue .2 U'olves Under 14s ___6 TWO goals apiece from Sam Langford and Max Harrison secured the tvin for Clitheroe after Jack Dewhurst hauled the side level. For the first 20 min

put any sort of pressure on their opponents after going a goal behind, until their first concerted attack brought them a goal from Dewhurst. This acted as the cata

dominated the second half, and Harrison deservedly scored two goals, followed by a sixth strike from by Joe S'wier- ezynski. . Darwen Hawks........ 1
Whalley Junior s___6 A HAT-TEICK from Connor Ripley helped Whalley to -victory. The win was not as
easy as the scoreline sug gested, as the villagers fell behind to an early goal and they struggled to equalise. When Ripley was
brought down in the box in the last minute of the first half, Sam Jennings despatched the penalty and opened the flood gates. The second half start
ed well for Whalley, as Ripley scored straight from the kick off, and his second was a rocket from fully 25 yards. He completed his hat-trick as he pounced on a quick throw in to fire home. Whalley continued to
create chances, and Liam Kinney slid in the fifth goal after a fine run from Tom Baldwin. Whalley saved the
best for last, as David Astley surged out of defence and fed Joe Bentley, who lashed an unstoppable shot home.

CLITHEROE Lions have two finals to look fonvard to after beating the odds. The locals will line-up for
the Craven League First Division Cup and the Northern Plant Hire Tro phy finals after two tremen dous displays. Oh Saturday, the Lions
stunned title favourites Oxenhope Reserves in the League Cup on penalties after a 3-3 draw. Oxenhope took the lead
after only 15 seconds with a freak goal that spooned over helpless keeper Mashiter for a home for ward to slot home at the back post. The Lions were bombard
Chipping ..................................3 Haisall ................. .........2 A THRILLING comeback saw Chipping get back to winning ways on Saturday against the league leaders to boost their push for a top- three finish. In a first half of few
chances, it was the villagers that drew first blood with a bizarre goal. Grant Heywood launched
a long throw into the box, and a visiting defender glanced a header over his own keeper, which was then put into his own net by another Haisall defender. A weakened Chipping side
battled valiantly, and restricted Haisall to specula tive efforts. However, it was from one
of these efforts that they drew level in spectacular fashion. The visitors struck the
first blow of the second peri od with another stunning effort. It seemed like there was
little danger as the ball bounced on the edge of the Chipping box, but the Hai sall number seven hammered a left foot volley to give his side the lead. Behind to the league lead-
ers in the searing heat. Chip ping could have been excus^ for letting their heads drop. However, they showed
tremendous fighting spirit to battle their way back. A free kick was won just
inside the Halsall half, which gave Chipping a chance to exploit their clear height advantage. The ball was beautifully
floated in by Mick Garth, and amid a sea of bodies, Danny Austin jumped high est to nod the ball in. This was an enormous
boost for the villagers and they pushed on in search of a winner,, which duly came from the head of man-of-the- match Ryan Hilton. It was again Heywood
who put a long throw into the middle, and Hilton rose to power a header home. Chipping will look to build
on this as they welcome Hoghton West End to the village on Saturday (kick-off 2-30 p.m.).

Hamilton and Paul Clegg
were immense at the back, having to'fend off a barrage of long balls and crosses and despite conceding another goal soon after, the Lions were delighted to be only 2- 1 down against the steep gradient. After an encouraging
half-time team talk, the Lions came out all guns blazing, and a fabulous move enabled Zak Holgate

RIMINGTON maintained their challenge for the East Lancashire League First Division runners-up spot. The home side was full of
confidence, having just beaten Worsthorne to reach the last four of the cup, but it was the visitors who started well, with wing backs Whalley and Keigh ley getting forward at every opportunity. Park had the first
goalscoring chance when they broke away, but Anderson made an excellent save at the feet of the for ward. Penman opened the scor
ing when a good move found him in space in the area, and he made no mistake, lifting the ball over the keeper into the net. Shortly after, the centre
forward controlled the ball on his chest but unfortu nately dragged his shot wide. Rimington had to bring
on Andrew Hartley just before half-time as Walms- ley received a nasty blow to the head. In the second half Ander
son made another good save, as he pounced on a goal-bound back-heeled effort, but it was the visitors who extended their lead thanks to the alert Penman, as he nipped in between the' centre half and the hesitant keeper to squeeze the ball home at the near post. He then had a great chance to seal his hat-trick as he latched on to a through ball, but his chip landed on the roof of the net. As the home side pushed
men forward, this left gaps at the back and O'Neill beat his man before lobbing the keeper, but his effort struck the bar. This win, coupled with
Silden's defeat, means that Rimington are almost assured of second place, as they face the Yorkshire side this Saturday. Silsden need to win every
game to prevent the visitors taking runners-up spot. Thanks go to sponsor B. Whalley of Rimington.

. Oxenhope................ ...7 Waddinglon..................0 WADDINGTON suffered a humiliating defeat in the Craven Premier Division League Cup. This was the worst defen
sive display that manager Jim Tierney has experi enced in a long career. The match started well
for Waddington and half chances fell to Pete Fletcher and Anton Gawthorp, but both efforts went wide of the goal, while Martin Cane had a long-range shot which just cleared the crossbar. At the other end, the
Waddington midfield and defence were also dealing with the home team's attacks, with Wayne Leach making the impressive saves during the half. Three minutes before the
interval; Oxenhope took the lead through a well-taken free kick. . Two goals conceded early
in the second half, due to appaling positional play by the Waddington defence, put the home side 3-0 ahead.
' And at this stage, too
many of Waddington's players let their heads drop, and the team in general appeared to give up the ghost. The home side scored four, with
another
Waddington's defence all over the place and unable to defend the high balls that,
. came into their area. This heavy defeat was
due more to the abject per formance of the majority of the Waddington team, rather than a good perform ance by a strong Oxenhope, who had already suffered two defeats at the hands of the villagers this season. Waddington's next game
is at home to Embsay on Saturday, kick-off 2 p.m. Waddington require a
manager for their first team next season after the deci sion taken by Tierney to relinquish the position at the end of the season. Anybody interested in
taking on this managerial position should contact the club secretary Pat Layton (428424).
GRINDLETON are finish ing the season on a high after two wins in four days against Rolls-Royce. Last Wednesday,
Grindleton ended up com fortable 5-2 winners as goals from Scott Fielding, Martin Dobson, Martin Cowey, Darren Barrow and Dan Fawcett reflected the locals’ dominance. Saturday’s game didn’t
have the same number of p a ls , but was an equally impressive 2-0 victory away from home. A steely defensive display,
most notably from the cen tre halt pairing of Phil North and man-of-the- match Ryan Fawcett kept the home side at bay. In the first half, both
teams tried to acclimatise themselves to the unusually warm weather and hard pitch, resulting in neither side taking a stranglehold on the game. However, early in the sec
. .
ond half, while the visitors were temporarily reduced to 10 men, Grindleton deservedly took the lead. Captain Barrow chipped
the ball into the danger area for striker Fielding to fire home. With their tails up and
playing some attractive football, Grindleton could have furthered their'lead when winger Dobson rat tled the bar from close
range. Soon the second goal did
arrive, in spectacular fash ion. Cowey dispatched a won
derful volley from the edge of the box, leaving the Rolls keeper a mere spectator. As anticipated. Rolls
travel to North Cumbria for the next round of the Mor rison Cup against Sed- burgh, which remains Grindleton's last remaining hope for silverware this sea son. The final league game of
refused to lie down, but the Grindleton back four stood firm to ensure the double was complete. On Saturday, Grindleton
the season takes place at title favourites’ Oxenhope the following Saturday.
Dog In n ..........................4 Great Harwood Rovers .3 DOG Inn recovered from a nightmare start to secure three vital points in this hard-fought tussle at High- ams. The Whalley side found
themselves two goals down after just eight minutes - not the best scenario for a side chasing runners-up spot in their first season in the top flight. However, they gradually
fought their way back into the game and missed several chances before midfield dynamo Craig Barnes tapped home two minutes before the interval. This was the experienced
Barnes’ first goal for the club, and buoyed by their finish to the first half. Dog started strongly after the break and leading scorer Jamie Enefer finished confi dently to draw them level. The locals then took the
lead when the returning Liam Porter produced a cool finish for his 11th goal of the season. And an impressive fourth
from the outstanding Dar ren Fothergill looked to have made the game sate, only tor a long-range Great Harwood effort to set up a nervous final few minutes. Manager Simon Kerins
was relieved at seeing his side come back to earn their third successive league win. He .said: "We were

nowhere near our best today, but we showed great spirit and determination to battle back and ran out worthy winners. We were missing quite a few regulars, but it was great to welcome back Riccardo Marchi, Anthony Dobson and Yasir Patel, whose opportunities have been limited this sea-
winning penalty, and the Lions will now play Pendle on May 3rd at Skipton Town. The previous week, the
locals produced a shock 2-1 win over Cononley Sports to progress to the final of the Northern Plant Hire Trophy. The locals soon opened
the scoring when after strik er Pinard crossed low and hard from the left, and. Matthew Rung anticipated quicker than his marker to dispatch the ball over the keeper from close range. The referee then harshly
gave a indirect free kick for a raised foot on the edge of the box which the Cononley
Champs close in
midfielder buried into the top right hand corner after receiving a short pass. In the second half the
match was evenly balanced, with neither team looking like taking the lead until central defender Paul Clegg made a great challenge on' the edge of his area, and took the ball forward past a couple of 'challenges before producing an exquisite throughball straight down the middle for Rung to out pace two defenders and toe- poke over the keeper. Cononley threw every
thing at the Lions, but a superb defensive effort saw the locals hang on to claim the victory.

Silsden ..........................1 Hurst Green . . : ............2 CHAMPIONS Hurst Green signed off their East Lancashire League cam paign in winning style. In very hot weather, the
game was played on a rock hard, difficult surface, which made flowing football quite tricky. The champions started
off slowly, and were dealt an early blow when Ian Simp son was forced off with an ankle injury. But they came more into
the game and forced a suc cession of dangerous Craig Dewhurst corners, from which Tony Coupe, Andy Whaites and Ian Barton all missed headed chances. A flowing move involving
Nicky Wilkinson, Dewhurst and Danny Walker led to an excellent near post strike from Mark Young, which crashed back off the bar with the keeper well beaten. But the league's leading
scorer was not to be denied, and he gave Hurst Green a thoroughly-deserved lead when another Dewhurst corner was only partially cleared, and he volleyed home. The second half started
well for the Hurst Green, but 15 minutes in they seemed to lose momentum, and the youthful Silsden side came more into the
game. They equalised when a
long-range effort beat keep er Stephen Young, but this seemed to rally Hurst Green, and they proved their championship creden tials by laying siege to the home goal. Barton and Whaites both
went close with headers from corners, and just when it appeared the game was to end in a draw, Simon Tipton won it in the last minute when his cross-shot from the left wing deceived the home keeper and found its way into the roof of the net. That gave Hurst Green a
highly impressive 21st win in their 26 league outings. Manager Andy Holden
was delighted with all his players after the game, again praising their tremen dous attitude and will to
win. They can now look for
ward to trying to add some more silverware in the shape of the President’s Cup. . 'They are in semi-final action at Langho on Tues day (6-30 p.m.) against Peel Park.
B THE Blackburn Junior Badminton Club will start on Thursday at Darwen Vale High School. Places are limited for the 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. sessions, so if you are interested, please contact Barbara Lomas as soon ^ possible. superb fitness by playing his third game in a fort night. Meanwhile, on the adja
cent pitch, the first team had a far tougher time of it. In spite of a confident
start, especially from the pack, using the driving
maul to good effect, a lot of hard graft and a solitary try from lock Bobby 'Wilkinson was all they had to show for their efforts. In the meantime, Carn
forth. replied with two of their own to put them 12-7 ahead at the break..

The second half was one
to forget as the scrums went from bad to worse. This was certainly one of
the poorest 40 minutes of scrummaging from the Clitheroe eight this season, and not surprisingly the club coach was quietly steaming on the sidelines as the pack wilted under the hot sun. A final score of 37-19 was

Heesom sparkles!
By Edward Lee
DAVID Heesom was in sparkling form at Clitheroe Golf Club on Saturday. An outward nine of one-
under-par was only a taste of what was to follow in the medal and Castle Cup qual ifier. Three-under on the back
nine resulted in a nett 65, and gave the two-handicap- per a resounding win. Alex Taylor took time
out before his trip to Old Trafford to return a cred itable nett 69 for second place, after a card play-off with Daniel Preedy, and Andrew Spouse made his presence felt with a nett 70 for fourth place. Two handi- capper Martin Cane took the gross prize with a round of 72. Peter Bradley’s nett 69
took Division Two and the eye of the handicap com mittee, while the experi enced Orville Hudson claimed second spot after a card play-off with Trevor Jones and David Brennan. Sunday’s fourball was a
triumph for exiles Derrick Eglin and Ross Lee. Winter ing in New Zealand and Spain ensured they were up and running for the new sea son, and their 45-point return was too liot for the rest of the field. Alan Houghton and
Dieno George put them selves in contention with a birdie at the 17th, but a bogey up the last cost them top spot as Ian Johnson and Dave Jackson finished with a flourish to claim third place on 44 points. The first major of the sea
son, the Frank Longworth Trophy, was played at Whalley on Saturday. Bill Banks finally added
his name to a trophy hoard with a fine round of 83-15- 68 after a card play-off, with Jerry Riley (89-21-68) who took the Division Three honours. Andy Wray (72-3-69) led
Division One honours, and the gross prize after a card play-off with John Haworth (78-9-69). Division Two was won by
Karl Shipston (87-18-69), with the in-form Roger Armitage (89-18-71) in sec ond place. Dan Rodgers (96-24-72) took second place in Division Three. The Whalley team have progressed to. the third
an indication of the how poor the second half was, as any clean possession Clitheroe got, they kicked it away, which was meat and drink to the strong-running Carnforth backline. At least two late tries
saved some of Clitheroe's blushes. Alex Hough scored one
after a strong burst through the centre, then followed up
round of The Mail on Sun day Team Classic, defeating Great.Harwood4‘/2-‘/2. Team members were
Trevor Thornher, Colin T. Elliott, Roy Ellis, Danny Liles and Mike Conroy. Summer weather greeted
competitors in the April Medal at Slonyhurst. Les Hoole had the score
of the day to win the over- 18 handicap category with a score of 88-25-63, which saw him finish well clear of Keith Fitzhenrj' (85-19-66). In the scratch to 17 cate
gory, Tony Lee (82-13-69) won on a card play-off from Dougie Boreham. Glorious spring weather
also provided the backdrop for the Post Office Cup at
Carl Schofield took the tro phy with a 5-up total, and just edged out Frank Wilcox, whose 4-up was good enough for second prize. Divisional awards went to
Mytton Fold. It also helped to ensure the scoring was excellent in this prestigious bogey competition. After a fine round of golf,
Glyn Watson (4-up) and president David Hargreaves (3-up) in Division One; Alan Moorby and Peter Main (both 2-up) in the Division Two, with Wally Scully (3-up) and Dave Pen- nington (3-up) taking the Division Three honours. Pat Murray and Kris
Baldwin won the Corona tion Foursomes Qualifier at Clitlieroo with 39 points. They finished five points
clear of Jane Chandler and Pat Taylor, who took second place after a card play-off with G. Eddlestone and G. Farthing. Carole Blackadder and
Shiriey Palich returned a nett 76 to win the Scott Leggatt Foursomes at Whalley.
Lesley Lohou and Joyce Andrew (78) were second, with Vivien Birtwell and Fran Geirat (78.5) in third place. Andrew Heesom showed
his class with a 72-2-70 to take the junior medal at Clitheroe by two shots from T. Jeffrey. William Kenyon took the
spoils in the Easter Junior Medal when his nett 70 return proved to be three shots better than second- placed Charlie Woodruff. Junior captain Sarah Hale finislied third with a cred itable nett 75.
his own chip and chase. Then the new boy, young
Ed Rigby, a product of the improving Clitheroe Colts team, was on hand to show his finishing pace to score on his debut for the firsts. On Saturday, Clitheroe
