IN just one year the nation disposes of enough clothing and textiles to fill the new Wembley stadium to overflowing. The children at Oakhill College, in Whalley, are involved in a recycling

venture that helps others and Oakhill at the same time. I t is an operation called

“Bag2school”, which collects quality second hand clothing which is sold on to wholesalers in Russia, Latvia and Lithuania, who in turn sell them on for individual use.

School funds benefit, with

Bag2School paying for each bag col lected, which in turn has a positive effect on landfill sites. The less fortu nate in the countries concerned also benefit by being able to buy and re-use good quality clothes and textiles. The recent collection at Oakhill saw

820 kilos of clothes and textiles col lected, which raised some £205 for school funds.

CLITHEROE Chamber of Trade doubled its contribution this year towards the cost of the town’s Christmas decorations. . President Terry Joy is pictured presenting the

second of two cheques for £500 towards Ciitheroe Town Council and Ciitheroe Decorative Com mittee’s 2006 Christmas lights scheme. The scheme provides one set of lights and one

tree to local businesses. Contributions from local traders are welcomed, while the remainder of the funds are provided by Ribble Valley Borough Council, Ciitheroe Chamber of Trade and Ciitheroe Town Council. Normally, Ciitheroe Chamber of Trade provide

£500, but this year, Mr Joy explained: “The com mittee was struggling for funds and the Chamber was more than happy to help them out.” (Dur picture shows Mr Joy making the presen

tation to Ciitheroe Town Mayor Coun. Allan Knox. (T130307/4)

Ciitheroe Advertiser & Times, Thursday, April 19fh, 2007 19 A taste of Titanic? by Faiza Afzaal

THE main reception at Castle Cement’s Ribblesdale works might always look ship-shape - but it now turns out it could be a lot more ship shape than anyone ever Imagined. Research being undertaken for a new book

on the history of the works has revealed the main grand staircase in the works reception is almost certainly taken from the liner, the RMS Olympic, the sister ship to the ill-fated Titanic. The staircase is reported to be an exact replica of that on the Titanic. The Olympic set sail on its maiden voyage

on June 14th, 1911, as the then largest vessel ever created by man. The Titanic set out some 10 months later. The Olympic went on to enjoy a distin

guished time on the ocean waves including active service during the First World War when it made history by becoming the only merchant ship to sink an enemy submarine. The ship was sold to a Sir John Jarvis in

1935, who in turn sold it to a construction company called Thomas Ward. Thomas Ward had a ship-breaking wing

Sara’s lands a place in the finals

A CLITHEROE shop is one of the best independent gift retail shops in the country - and that's official! Sara’s of Ciitheroe, in Castle

Street, has been nominated a finalist in the "The Greats Gift Retailer of the Year Awards" and now faces a nail-biting wait until May 10th where the undisputed Oscars of the gift industry will be announced. The competition, run by the

prestigious trade magazine "Pro gressive Gifts and Home World wide", attracted an overwhelming number of entries this year. Now

in its fifth year, the credibility of the awards has soared and soared. Sara's has been picked as one of

the top five best shops in the Mid lands and the North and is up against 30 of the best retailers in the whole of the UK. The winners will be announced

at a glittering awards night at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in the heart of London. "We are absolutely thrilled,"

said a delighted Sara Collinge. "The shop looks absolutely amaz ing and it’s all thanks to my bril liant staff. “This is a huge accolade and

great recognition of all their hard work. It’s been a real thrill to be nominated when we’re up against the very best independent shops in the country. It’s great for us and hopefully will benefit Ciitheroe too. “How many other towns can

boast a famous sausage shop, a famous wine shop and now one of the best independent gift shops?" Sara will be taking two of her

staff down to the awards ceremo ny.

"Sadly the other two can’t

make it, but our thoughts wll be with them as they hold the fort!"

to the company and, more pertinently, was also the company which that year built the Ribblesdale works. Mr Peter del Strother, of Simonstone, is

general manager (technical) for Castle Cement and has been commissioned by the company to write a book on the history of the worte. This has seen him pulling together not

only the technical history of the site but the human story, unravelling social history stretching back 250 years. It was during his research for the book

that he uncovered the story of the staircase and the Glympic link. “The evidence certainly points to the

story being true,” said Peter. “The Glympic was certainly bought and broken up by

Thomas Ward in the same year the compa ny was building the Ribblesdale works. “I’d be very interested to hear from any

one who can she'd any further light on the story or who has conclusive proof that the staircase is from the Glympic.” It is hoped the book will be finished by

the autumn at which point Castle Cement will give complimentary copies to employ ees, local schools, the local council and other organisations interested in learning more about local history. Anyone with any information on the

staircase coming from the Glympic should contact Maria Punchard at the Ribbles dale Works on 01200 422401 or write to her at Castle Cement, Ciitheroe, BB7 4QF.
