Cafe rumours no decision yet

by Faiza Afzaal

RUMOURS th a t Jimmy Clitheroe’s Cafe is set to be demolished and replaced with a housing association office are said to be grossly exaggerated. I t is claimed th a t if council

house tenants vote in favour of Ribble Valley Borough Council transferring its entire housing stock to a Registered Social Land lord (RSL), the popular cafe in New Market Street, will be knocked down and re-built in the underused “bull ring” area in the heart of the market. Instead, the existing site would

be used to build new administra tion offices for Ribble Valley Homes - the chosen housing asso ciation. Officials at the borough council

have stressed that it is still early days and nothing will be rubber- stamped until the tenants vote in favour of the transfer. As reported in the March 8th

edition of last month’s Clitheroe Advertiser and Times, Cheshire- based housing association “Vicini

ty ” has been chosen to own and manage the borough’s 1,000 coun cil homes - if the transfer goes ahead. The move to'transfer the owner

ship and management of the coun cil’s 1,000-plus homes to a local housing organisation would unlock around £65m. of investment. But the transfer depends entirely on the tenants who are expected to vote in a ballot later this year. The cafe building is owned by

Ribble Valley Borough Council, but leased by Mr Ronnie Birch, who has been running the business for the past 10 months. He told us: “Nothing has been finalised as yet. I’ve been told that if the transfer goes ahead, then the cafe will be knocked down and re-built in the bull ring. I t’s fine by me. I have no problem with that decision.” Meanwhile, crisis talks have

been taking place after Lancashire County Council announced that the town’s award-winning Tourist Information Centre is set to close next April. Bosses had originally . earmarked the centre for closure some time this year as part of its cost-cutting, but in a surprise U-

turn, granted the centre in Market Place a 12-month reprieve. tVith a new venue being sought to offer the services already being provid ed by the TIC, speculation is rife that a TIC will be built above the new cafe. However, council officials have been unable to confirm or deny this. In a statement earlier this week,

Mr David Morris, the council’s chief executive said: “There are several bridges to cross, particular ly the ballot of tenants, before Rib ble Valley Homes comes into being. “If transfer gets the go-ahead, it

is vital that Ribble Valley Homes is based in the community that it is being created to serve and is as accessible as possible. “The housing association is

therefore looking for a town centre premises and the market is one of a number of sites under considera tion, but no decision has been reached as to where the most suit able site might be. “The market site is an exciting

proposal th a t will be fully dis cussed with everyone concerned at the appropriate time.”

A lucky escape

-•S

A FAMILY-of-four had an “extremely lucky escape” after a fierce fire broke out at a house in Billingtbn. Fire crews spent

Barcelona here we come!

A RIBBLE Valley estate agent is hoping to have a “wheely” good trip in Europe. On April 28th Russell Anderton and

four fellow cyclists will set off from the Eiffel Tower in Paris at the start of an 800-mile trip south to Barcelona. The cyclists, who also include Malcolm

Brown, of Holden, as well as two mem bers of a support team, expect to arrive in Catalonia’s capital eight days later. On April 27th the team will fly out to

the French capital to begin their chal lenge. If they are successful, the cyclists hope to raise a significant sum for the children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent. Russell, a partner in the anderton bosonnet estate agency, has spent the last

three months training for this endurance test as every rider will have to cycle around 100 miles each day. Said Russell: “We have now started to

see the sponsorship cheques coming in which is great. I would expect us to raise at least £5,000 from the ride, but we are also planning other events for later in the

year.” Anyone who wants to make a donation

can call into anderton bosonnet’s Clitheroe office at 31 King Street or its ■Whalley branch -103 King Street. Pictured from the left are, Robert Lit

tle, riders Stephen Preston, Russell, David Worden, Malcolm and Mark Braithwaite, and Andrew Walker, (s)

almost three hours extinguishing the blaze at a mid-terrace prop erty in Billington Gar dens, which is believed to have been started by a cigarette end discard ed in a waste bin. After the incident, at

1-29 a.m. on Saturday, Mr Dave McGrath, watch manager a t Clitheroe’s retained fire station said the smoke alarm saved their lives.

9 A MAN banned for life from keeping or being in charge of ani mals appeared before Blackburn magistrates accused of two breach es of that order. John Robert Muir Layland (71), of Settle Road, Newsholme, was remanded on bail until a later court date.
