Ciitheroe 422324 (Editoriai), 422323 (A dvertising); Burniey 422331 (Ciassified) Memorable trip out for ramblers’ group

BLEASDALE was the setting for Clitheroe Raniblers’ most recent walk. A group of 20 ramblers led by Ben

Brown completed a horseshoe of ridge walking followed by a few miles of foot paths leading across farmland. Starting from Delph Lane, a rough

moorland track was followed from Stang Yule winding its way up the hillside on to the slopes of Hazelhurst Fell. Fine views opened up across to Fair Snape Fell and Parlick and down in to the Bleasdale Val ley.

A coffee stop was taken beside the trig

point on the summit of Hazelhurst Fell U,407 ft), the first of the day’s three sum mits. After this there was some loss of height, but this was soon regained and more on the way over Winny Bank and up to Fiendsdale Head. This point is an important crossroads for walkers linking Chipping and Bleasdale on the south side with the Trough of Rowland to the north. The boundary fence was followed round

the top of Home House Fell and then to the cairn marking the highest point of Fair Snape Fell (1,707ft). Lunch was taken half a mile south west from here at the trig

point and the large cairn known as Paddy’s Pole. A well walked grassy path led down and then up again to the final summit, the conical shape of Parlick (1,417ft). A descent was made to the large farm of

Blindhurst. A stop here proved to be liter ally the icing on the cake, as a range of dif ferent refreshments were sampled as the walkers were welcomed back. As they were the very first customers, they received a special discount too. Field paths via Bleasdale Church,

Brooks Barn, Broadgate and High Moor brought the party back to the start point.

AN ex-policewoman who quit her job to launch a new business has been crowned the region’s best. Two years ago. Gill Sher-

ratt (37), of Sabden, ditched her days on the beat in favour of setting up “Licensing Mat ters” - a new business aimed at helping licensees avoid the confusion surrounding new licensing laws. The company, which has

grown quickly and already developed a strong reputation within a niche market, scooped the BIBAs (Be Inspired Business Awards) 2007 New Business of the Year Award at a glittering, Oscar-style ceremony in Blackpool. Organised by Business Link

Lancashire and the North and Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce, the event was attended by over 650 repre sentatives from local business es alongside key dignitaries from across the country. Licensing Matters beat

fierce competition from other award, sponsored by the North West Regional Devel opment Agency. Delighted with the win. Gill

said: “I really didn’t expect to win.

“My story is an inspiration

to others. I was a normal girl in a fantastic job, which would have paid a decent pen sion when I reached 55.

“However, I had the guts to L-'

leave that job and set up a business, which is providing licensing solutions to licensed premises across the region. “I t ’s an unbelievably fan

tastic feeling to have won and I feel i t ’s nice to have been recognised. “I really enjoy what I’m

doing and this award has given me the confidence that what I’m doing is right.” Gill went on to pay tribute

to her.husband, Paul, for his support. She added: “Paul has been

extremely supportive, helping looking after our two boys and doing the housework. “I wouldn’t have been able

to run the business without him.” Mr Clive Memmott, chief

executive of Business Link Lancashire, said: “This year’s competition has seen a record number of outstanding entries from businesses across Lan cashire.” In November last year.

Licensing Matters won the Vision 0,6 “Small Business of the Year Award” in the CENTA (Consortium of Enterprise Agencies in Lan- cashire)'awards. ■Looking ahead. Gill hopes

her business will continue to go from strength-to-strength

and she is able to help more people in the licensed trade. Our picture shows Gill

receiving the trophy from Mr Mike Hill, head of business link delivery, (s)
