SPEEDING motorists are being warned to slow down or face being prosecuted. Police will bo maintaining high visibility
patrols in the Painter Wood area of Billing- ton in a bid to crack down on speeders. The move follows numerous complaints
from residents in the village about fast cars dashing outside their homes. Whalley Police Community Support Offi-
c.er (PCSO) Matt Thornton is urging motorists to put the brakes on speed or risk being stopped, fined and even prosecuted. “Over the ne.xt few weeks, officers will be out and about carrying out checks in the area to catch the anti-social drivers”, he said.

Rowland Mountain Rescue Team at their Smelt Mill Headquarters, near Dunsop Bridge. The youngsters had a great
time being hosted by the rescue team and learning about the work that the members undertake on behalf of the community. During their time there, the
Cubs had the chance to try their rescue equipment, attempt a little first aid and even had the oppor tunity to use the team’s climbing wall. The children enjoyed their time
so much that they decided to raise some funding towards the team’s refurbishment of the headquar ters building by climbing Pendle Hill.
The sponsored challenge proved
a success and the Cubs managed to raise over £500 to boost funds for the Rowland Mountain Res cue Team. Kirsten McAteer a spokesman
for the emergency service said: “A lot of people think we’re only here to help people when they get into
difficulties.However, our work extends into education and aware

Pounding streets in a good cause
MORE fund-raising events are being organised in aid of a chil dren’s charity. In three days’ time, friends Ali
son Bury (40) and Gail Goodrick (50), of Calderstones Park, Whal ley, will pound the streets of the capital to take part in this year’s London Marathon. They woman are running the 26-
mile race to boost funds for a local radio s ta tio n’s “Help a Local Child” charity. The aim of the campaign is to
raise thousands of pounds for local Children in Crisis. This is aimed at children who are suffering from abuse or neglect, who are disabled and have special needs and for chil dren and young people who need extra care or guidance. The duo will be joined by Wilp-
shire resident, Denise Gaffing, who is running the race for the first time in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Over the past few months, the trio have organised a series of

21st world jamboree SCOUTS from Clitheroe are preparing to attend the 21st World Scout Jamboree, 2007, to celebrate the centenary of the movement. A group of 10 scouts from the Clitheroe
District will attend the event at Hylands Park in Chelmsford, Essex, the birthplace of the Scouting movement, this summer. To help them with their preparations, the
chairman of Clitheroe District Scout Fellow ship, Ken Staines, presented the youngsters with “swop badges” at a recent fund-raising coffee morning. The Scouts were presented with Clitheroe
District’s official badge, which has the Pen dle witch and East Lancashire rose embla zoned on it. The idea is that they will be able to swop
these badges with other Scouts, who will be attending the event from all over the world. Some of the funds raised by the coffee
morning, which was held at the Ribble Valley Mayor’s Parlour in Clitheroe, will be used towards the cost of the Scouts attending the event. Our picture shows Mr Staines presenting

Cancer charity mum loses fight for life

A RIBBLE VALLEY mother of five, who joined the committee of Ribble Val ley and White Rose Ladies five years ago, has lost her own fight against can cer.
Angela Oldfield (49) had joined the com
mittee of the award-winning charity to help with its outstanding efforts to raise money for research into children’s cancers for Can cer Research UK. Just two years after joining the commit
tee, Angela was diagnosed with breast can cer and has remained a valued member of the team while fighting her own battle against the disease, which developed into bone cancer, for the past three years.
Fellow committee member Carol Maher
explained: “Angela’s parents, Betty and John Crosier, joined us to represent her when we travelled to London in the autumn to receive an award for ‘Outstanding Service’ in fund raising from Cancer Research UK. They were able to visit the research laboratories with us and take some comfort in the hope that we will eventually manage to beat this most terrible virulent killer of our times.” The charity will be dedicating its next
lunch on May 2nd to Angela and hope that members old and new will attend the event in support of the cause closest to her heart. The speaker will be entertaining Town Crier, David Mitchell regaling “For Crying Out Loud”. For tickets to the tribute luncheon, con tact Karen Weaving on 01756 700100.

ley Christian Action Group, began at the English Martyrs’ RC Church and called at the abbey and the parish and Methodist churches, \vith appro priate hymns and readings.
