Paperboy Andrew is smiling again

by Faiza Afzaal

PAPERBOY Andrew Wilson can complete his ro u n d s in comfort - thanks to a brand new bike. The.l3-year-old, who is a deliv

ery boy for Thorougoods newsagents, in Waterloo Road, had his new bicycle stolen as he nipped into the newsagent’s to collect his loaded bag. Andrew, of Whittle Close,

Clitheroe, had saved all his wages and Christmas tips to buy the Shockwave XT700 bike, worth £120, before it was snatched from outside the shop just five days after buying it. The teenager, who attends Rib-

blesdale High School Technology College, had been left devastated

by the theft and was having dif ficulty completing his rounds as he had been forced to rely on an old bike. Through the pages of the

Clitheroe Advertiser and Times he launched an appeal for infor mation leading to the where abouts of the machine. But he is now celebrating -

thanks to newsagent David Ainsworth and John Hargreaves, of Hargreaves Cycles, in Moor Lane, Clitheroe, who joined forces and decided to fund a new Rocky Ridge bicycle. Commenting on the move,

David said: “I had decided to replace it once I heard Andrew’s bike had been stolen. “What people don’t realise is

that these lads work very hard. They are up for seven, delivering six-days-a-week in all weathers.

“I appreciate what they do for

me and wanted to help Andrew out.”

David added he was delighted

w'ith the enormous amount of goodwill from members of the public who had read of Andrew’s plight in this paper and contact ed him with a view to donating towards a new bike.

“We had calls from several cus

tomers who were disgusted after hearing of the theft and offered to contribute towards a new bike. “We also had a call from anoth

er local bike shop offering to help out and are grateful to everyone who came forward,” he added. Our picture shows David and

paperboy Andrew delighted to be back on his bike and delivering copies of his favourite weekly newspaper

h . Potting up for mum

YOUNG green-fingered enthu siasts at Chatburn Pre-School have been busy planting bulbs to bring a smiie to the faces of their mothers. The 30-strong group of tod

dlers rolled up their sleeves and planted daffodil and hyacinth bulbs in multi-coloured pots donated by Shackleton Garden Centre. As a token of apprecia

tion, the children will present the pots to their mums on Mother’s Day on Sunday. The move comes after staff at

the pre-school responded to an article in the Clitheroe Adver tiser and Times appealing to local schools and pre-schools to get in touch Mth the Chatbum- based garden centre should they require the plant pots.

Samaritans need YOU!

AN urgent appeal for volun teers has been launched by a charity that provides confiden tial and emotional support 24 hours a day.

Samaritans, based in Black

burn and covering the town with Darwen, Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley, is under seri ous threat unless volunteers come forward and help with its increasing workload. Mrs Judith Houghton direc

tor of the local branch said: “Samaritans offer a unique, 24- hour service for people who have nowhere else to turn. “Without our volunteers, we

could not continue to be here for the thousands of people who contact us each year. She added: “Being a volun

teer can be Incredibly reward ing as well as hard work. More than one in four people know someone who has died by sui

cide, more people know what it’s like to be desperate and to have no one to talk to. This is why Samaritan work is so vital. “We sincerely hope that some

volunteers will come forward to help us.” Samaritan volunteers come

from all walks of life and nobody is expected to take calls without full training and sup port. Anyone over 18 can apply to be a volunteer. A series of open evenings are

being held to tell prospective volunteers what It’s like to work for the charity. They will be held next Wednesday (March 21st), March 28th and April 4th at the Samaritan office, 105 New Park Street, Blackburn. The sessions will begin at 7-30 p.m. and will finish at 9 p.m. For further information, please call 01254 682266 and someone will get back to you.

A DISTRAUGHT woman and her three grandchildren are appealing for information about their lost pet dog. Three- year-old Molly slipped her col lar a t Clitheroe Auction Mart on Sunday, and was last seen by a member of staff running towards Clitheroe. Molly has a black coat and a white chest, is of medium size and looks simi

lar to a collie. Owner Mrs Josie Bennett was visiting the auc tion with her husband, from their home in Keighley. She has only had Molly for

five months, taking her in after she had been neglected, and is concerned that she may be very frightened. Should anyone see Molly they can contact Mrs Bennett on 01535 607987.
