RENOWNED UK organist Chris Powell received a stand ing ovation at his recent fund raising concert held at Trinity
Methodist Church. Leaving the audience spellbound
by the sheer brilliance of his musi cal talents, Mr Powell played for more than two hours, without a single note of music in sight. Wit nessing the speed and dexterity of his hands on an overhead screen left people speechless. He included music from the lat

est West End shows, Big Band tunes, a unique arrangement of light classics and a musical trip around Europe. The audience was dazzled by his
music in the style of Reginald Di.xon with his Wurlitzer organ sounds and his cascading hands flashing between the two key boards. When asked to play some special
requests, Mr Powell duly obliged, again using no music. There was audience participation
in the form of singing, but no will ing volunteers during Mr Powell’s rendition of the “Can Can”. The real highlight for Mr Powell
was being able to meet up with four of his teachers from St Wilfrid’s High School in Blackburn. He commented that he felt as
though he was sitting a major exam. If that was the case, I give
him full marks, an obvious credit to his tutors.
Mr Powell’s parents were told by
one of the teachers: “He will never make a career out of music.” He has proved them wrong and those who heard him agreed. A return visit could be a possibil
ity in 2008, as most people said it was a wonderful night, great value for money and a concert way beyond all expectations. The event was organised to raise
funds for the Rosemere Cancer Foundation at the Royal Preston Hospital, and to date, .€320 profit from the concert has been forward ed.

“THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND” (Cert 15); screenings on March 19th, 21st and 22nd at 7-30 p.m. at Stage & Screen @ St Mary’s Centre, Church Street, Clitheroe
ACTOR Forest Whitaker won a richly-deserved Best Actor Oscar for his chilling portrayal of brutal and complex Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in “The Last King of Scotland”. In an incredible twist of fate, a Scottish doctor (James McAvoy) on
a Ugandan medical mission becomes irreversibly entangled with Amin, one of modern history’s most barbaric figures. Impressed by Dr Garrigan’s brazen attitude in a moment of crisis,
the newly self-appointed Ugandan President Amin hand picks him as his personal physician and closest confidante. Though Garrigan is at first flattered and fascinated by his new posi
tion, he soon awakens to Amin’s savagery - and his own complicity in it. Horror and betray al
ensue as Garrigan tries to right his wrongs and escape Uganda alive. This is a grip ping must-see film, not least for Whitaker’s epic perform ance.
